All causes of Huoluan (acute gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhea) mostly originate from diet, such as consuming raw, cold, or mixed impure foods. This may result from eating fatty meats and drinking alcohol while exposed to wind and walking in dampness, wearing thin clothes and sitting outdoors, or sleeping at night without adequate covering. Upon initial onset, it is essential to keep the body warm by placing charcoal fire near where the patient lies; if the heat is too intense, move it away. Simultaneously, wrap the patient with steamed quilts or cotton-padded garments. If there are no readily available hot/cold exchange items, one can scorch the ground, pour hot water over a thin cloth laid on it, have the patient lie on top, and cover them thickly. Alternatively, prepare a simple warming device: place hot water in a jar, soak the feet up to the knees, and use a copper vessel filled with hot water placed on the abdomen. Cover with clothing for insulation, replacing when cool. One may also use an ironing iron filled with fire placed on the abdomen. If the condition does not clear after such measures, emergency moxibustion should be performed strictly according to a clear sequence of acupoints, avoiding random application. Moxibustion must be applied only corresponding to the specific disease symptoms; do not apply it prophylactically without indication. Although moxibustion may not cure immediately, it ensures survival. Do not stop moxibustion just because immediate relief is not observed. For treating Huoluan, if the mugwort pills are not potent enough, the number of moxa cones (Zhuang) need not be large; originally, seven Zhuang were considered sufficient, but forty to fifty Zhuang are also acceptable. As long as the heat penetrates, life can be saved. Administer old formulas such as Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) and Nongpo Daoudchi Tongmai Banxia Tang (Magnolia Bark, Soybean Fermented, and Pinellia Decoction to Unblock the Vessels). Medicines used by predecessors are hard to obtain; now, only good moxibustion methods and single prescriptions are listed, which are effective and not inferior to expensive medicines. Even those who have died recently can still be treated with moxibustion. Other medicines may be difficult to prepare, but Lizhong Wan and various decoctions like Sishun and Nongpo can be prepared in advance; purchase ingredients regularly during autumn and winter.
For sudden Huoluan presenting first with abdominal pain: Moxibustion above the umbilicus, 14 Zhuang, named Taicang (CV17 equivalent area), located four cun below the xiphoid process, measure carefully.
For those presenting first with severe diarrhea (Dongxia): Moxibustion one cun lateral to the umbilicus. Left side for males, right side for females, 14 Zhuang; severe cases up to 30-40 Zhuang. Acupoint name Dachangmu (Ex-LE5), suitable for draining method.
For those presenting first with vomiting: Moxibustion two cun below the xiphoid process, 14 Zhuang. This also treats persistent dysentery. For rebellious Qi ascending: Moxibustion 50 Zhuang, named Jueque (CV14), directly below the tip of the xiphoid process by one cun.
For those presenting first with cold extremities (Ni Leng): Moxibustion on the prominent bone above the medial malleolus of both feet, 7 Zhuang each foot; add more if necessary. Acupoint name Sanyinjiao (SP6), three cun above the tip of the medial malleolus.
For muscle spasms (Zhuanjin): Moxibustion at the center of the sole where the tendons gather under the big toe, 6-7 Zhuang, named Yongquan (KI1); also moxibustion in the middle of the crease under the big toe, 1 Zhuang, highly effective.
Another method: Moxibustion at the nail edge of the big toe, 7 Zhuang.
For spasms entering the abdomen causing pain: Have four people hold the limbs. Moxibustion two cun to the left of the umbilicus, 14 Zhuang; moxibustion on the large tendon in the thigh, one cun from the yin region.
For hiccups (Yue): Moxibustion at the first crease of the wrist, 7 Zhuang, named Xin Zhu (Neiguan PC6), opposite the middle finger.
For persistent diarrhea: Moxibustion on the medial side of the base of the big toe, one cun from the white flesh margin, 7 Zhuang on each side, named Dadu (SP2).
For dry retching: Moxibustion three cun posterior to the wrist crease, between the two tendons, 7 Zhuang on each side, named Jianshi (PC5). If true Jue syndrome with vomiting or apparent death occurs, moxibustion restores flow. The *Duanju* text has a formula for reviving the dead.
For simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea: Moxibustion between the two nipples. At the junction of the black nipple and the white skin near the abdomen, 7 Zhuang each, or up to 14 Zhuang.
If vomiting stops but diarrhea persists: Moxibustion one Fu width above the umbilicus, 7 Zhuang; alternatively, one cun two fen below the umbilicus, 7 Zhuang.
For feeling stifled and full: Moxibustion three cun below the xiphoid process, 7 Zhuang, named Weiguan (Jiuwei CV15).
Another method: Place salt in the umbilicus and moxibustion 14 Zhuang.
If pain reaches the umbilicus urgently: Moxibustion three cun below the umbilicus, 3x7=21 Zhuang, named Guanyuan (CV4), effective.
Mysterious moxibustion method for reviving Huoluan patients: Use an object to horizontally measure across the Renzhong (GV26), bending from the heart's Jiwei (CV15) flying across downwards to moxibust. Finish central moxibustion first, then horizontally moxibust left and right. Also moxibust on the spine, using an object to circle so it aligns with the xiphoid, and one cun left and right of the spine, 7 Zhuang each; this constitutes three points on the front and back.
Hua Tuo treated Huoluan patients who appeared dead, calling for their souls from rooftops, and applying all treatments without success.
Hold the patient's abdomen while they lie prone, extend arms, measure with a rope from end to end. Based on the elbow tips aligned with the rope, clamp the large bone of the spinal column, one cun from the spine on each side, moxibustion 100 Zhuang. If not cured, moxibust the Zhoushui (DU12) acupoint. Tested on hundreds, all sat up immediately after treatment. Hua Tuo passed this technique to his descendants, keeping it secret.
The above are all moxibustion methods.
