Whenever a patient recovers from a toxic disease (referring to severe infectious diseases or critical febrile conditions), within one hundred days, they must avoid consuming pork, dog meat, mutton, as well as foods that damage the blood vessels and fatty fish. Consuming dried fish will inevitably cause severe diarrhea; once diarrhea occurs, it cannot be saved. Additionally, one must avoid wheat products, garlic, leeks, scallions, raw vegetables, shrimp, etc. Eating these often leads to disease recurrence, which becomes difficult to treat, and may cause relapses for several years following the illness. This section provides formulas for treating critical illnesses where early exertion or improper diet after recovery nearly causes death.
Burn turtle plastron (Bie Jia) into ash and take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) per dose.
Another formula: Take a small amount of Hu Fen (Lead White Frost) with water.
Yet another formula: Take three sheng of rice flour, mix with warm water, and ingest. Then cover thickly to induce sweating.
Yet another formula: Take one handful of dried Perilla leaf (Zi Su Ye), add five sheng of water, boil down to two sheng, and drink all at once. If fresh leaves are unavailable, they can also be used, adding four liang of fresh ginger (Sheng Jiang) and one sheng of fermented soybean (Chi Dou).
Yet another formula: Take fourteen rat feces (Shu Shi) with pointed ends, half a he of Chi Dou, add three sheng of water, boil until reduced by half, and take in one dose. If tolerated, covering warmly to induce sweating will lead to recovery. One may also add one sheng of Hemp seed (Huo Ma Ren) and an additional sheng of water for better effect; alternatively, add Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) and a handful of Scallion white (Cong Bai).
Yet another formula: Crush the shells of eggs from brooding hens, roast until yellow-black, grind into fine powder, and take one ge with hot water. Cover warmly to induce sweating.
Yet another formula: Take two liang each of Da Huang (Rhubarb Root) and Ma Huang (Ephedra Stem), fourteen Zhizi Ren (Gardenia Seed), and one sheng of Chi Dou. Add five sheng of water, boil down to three sheng, and divide into two doses. Mild sweating and diarrhea should ensue.
Yet another formula: Decoct Gan Pi (Licorice Bark) strongly and drink it. Lu Gen (Reed Rhizome) is also good.
For weakness and relapse: Burn cooked rice, sift into powder, and take one fangcun bi. It is effective.
Formula for treating labor-relapse due to sexual intercourse, characterized by swollen testicles, retraction of testes into the abdomen, abdominal colic, or constipation:
Burn ashes from a menstruating woman’s clothing and take one fangcun bi.
Another formula: Take one rat, strike it thirty-six times, place it at the door until it pants excessively, then puncture its flank to extract one sheng of blood. Mix with one sheng of wine and drink. If a live rat is unavailable, use the blood alone, ensuring it does not cool. Use fresh blood.
Another formula: Place the underwear of the woman involved in intercourse over the man’s body for the duration of a meal; this can save him.
Another formula: Take the hind leg and blood of a male rabbit, mix with wine, and drink. The illness will heal.
Another formula: Scrape two sheng of Qing Zhu Ru (Green Bamboo Shavings), add three sheng of water, boil five to six times, then strain. Drink the bamboo shaving decoction warm. This formula is also generally applicable for labor-relapse.
Another formula: Mix one part Fan Shi (Alum) and three parts Xiao Shi (Niter), grind into powder. Mix with clear barley gruel and take one fangcun bi per dose, three times daily. Heat toxins will exit via urination and defecation.
Another formula: Take a large handful of Liao Zi (Polygonum seeds), decoct in water to extract juice, and drink one sheng. If dry, extract strong juice and drink. Crush scallion heads, mix with vinegar, and take; this is also good.
Another formula: Take several sheng of Earthworm (Di Long), extract juice, and drink. It is effective.
If, after recovery, a sick man has intercourse with a healthy woman, or a sick woman with a healthy man, the healthy partner contracts the condition (Yin Yi), while the sick partner suffers relapse. Relapse in this context is fatal.
Sudden onset of Yin Yi disease: After recovery from warm diseases, even if dozens of days have passed, the blood vessels are not yet harmonized, and residual heat toxins remain. Intercourse at this time transmits the disease, known as "Yin Yi," which is lethal. It is more severe than epidemic colds and requires urgent treatment.
Symptoms include heavy body, urgent heat in the lower abdomen, swelling of the chest, heavy head unable to lift, visual obscurations (Yi), and painful stiffness of knees and calves.
Formula: Cut pubic hair from a woman (preferably her own), burn to ash, and take one fangcun bi, three times daily. Once urination becomes smooth and slight swelling of the genitals occurs, recovery is indicated.
Pubic hair from a virgin girl is also good. If the patient is female, male pubic hair can be used.
Another formula: Take fourteen pointed rat feces (Shu Shi) and one handful of Lan Cao (Isatis Leaf), add five sheng of water, boil down to two sheng, drink all, and cover warmly to induce sweating.
Another formula: Boil twenty-four earthworms (Di Long) in one dou of water until three sheng remain. Take once; sweating should follow. Combined with other methods, it is effective.
Another formula: Take four liang of Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) powder, mix with boiling water, take in one dose, cover warmly to induce sweating. Stop when symptoms resolve.
Another formula: Upon initial sensation of discomfort in men, moxa the genital area for twenty-one moxibustion units (zhuang). If severe, up to one hundred zhuang may be applied. Eyes are unaffected; genital ulcers return to normal.
Two men or two women do not transmit this to each other. The term "Yi" refers to the exchange of yin and yang.
To prevent relapse: Take twenty nails/claws from a woman’s hands and feet, and one chi of the belt from her lower garment. Burn to ash and take with wine or rice water.
After major illness, slight exertion causes epistaxis (nosebleed).
Formula: Ten parts Zuo Gu Mu Li (Oyster Shell), five parts Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum). Grind into powder, take one fangcun bi with wine, three to four times daily. Can also be made into honey pills the size of wutong seeds.
Formula for post-illness deficiency sweating and sweating from the eyes:
Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) and Mu Li (Oyster Shell) in equal parts. Take with water before bed. Five bi measures suffice; if sweating continues, prepare more.
Another formula: Two liang of Gan Cao (Licorice Root) and two liang of Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum). Grind into powder, take one fangcun bi with sour浆 water (jiang shui), twice daily. Cures the condition.
Another formula: Mix powders of Long Gu (Fossilized Bones), Mu Li (Oyster Shell), and Ma Huang Gen (Ephedra Root). Apply as a dusting powder to the body. Effective.
Another condition: Post-recovery restlessness and insomnia, with mental anguish and eye pain. Formula: Seven he of Chi Dou (Fermented Soybean) and fourteen Wu Mei (Mume Fruit). Add four sheng of water, first boil Wu Mei to obtain two and a half sheng, then add Chi Dou and boil to obtain one and a half sheng. Divide into two doses. If Wu Mei is unavailable, fourteen Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit) can be used.
Another formula: Four liang of Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome), two liang of Shao Yao (Peony Root), one liang of Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), three small sticks of E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin). Add six sheng of water, boil down to three sheng, divide into three doses. Can also add two yolks from nursing chickens.
Another formula: Take one shi of Qian Li Liu Shui (Running Water from a thousand miles away), stir ten thousand times, take two and a half dou. Add two liang of Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), washed. Add one dou of Shu Mi (Millet) and four liang of Fu Ling (Poria). Boil together to obtain five sheng. Divide into five doses.
