To treat individuals who have a chronic root of labor injury (Xulao), where symptoms flare up upon slight exertion, causing pain throughout all joints and skin, or presenting with tendon stiffness and heat.
Take Bai Zhe (Bark of *Celtis sinensis*), specifically the root growing towards the southeast for one chi in length. Scrape off the outer bark and use the inner bark, burning it to fine ash, or alternatively, finely cut and pound it. Administer three Fang Cun Bi (a traditional measuring spoon) with wine to induce sweating under thick covers. Take three times daily; if wine is unavailable, administer with rice gruel. Bai Zhe refers to the thornless variety of Zhe tree.
To treat sudden onset of continuous insomnia.
In the evening, wrap new cloth and heat it over fire to compress the eyes. Simultaneously, steam soybeans, place them in alternating bags as pillows. Replace with hot bags when they cool down, keeping the head warm with hot bean bags throughout the night, which will lead to immediate recovery.
These two prescriptions were originally listed among miscellaneous treatments, both pertaining to Xu Lao (Deficiency-Labor). Although these conditions are not immediately life-threatening emergencies, they gradually consume the body. Treating them later requires several times more effort; therefore, these methods are briefly recorded here.
For men and women suffering from deficiency due to accumulated labor, or failure to recover after severe illness, often experiencing heaviness and stagnation in the four limbs, soreness and pain in bones and muscles, shortness of breath, panting upon movement, tightness in the lower abdomen, stiffness and pain in the waist and back, palpitations with a feeling of emptiness in the heart, dry throat and lips, lackluster complexion, loss of taste, weakness of Yin and Yang, sadness and worry, excessive sleeping with little rising. Long-standing cases may last years, while mild cases may persist for a hundred days, leading to emaciation and exhaustion of the Qi of the Five Zang Organs, making recovery difficult. This is the decoction formula for treatment.
Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) 2 liang, Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 3 liang, Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) 4 liang, Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) 5 liang (if unavailable, Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secatum) may be used), Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae) 21 pieces. Boil in 9 sheng of water until 3 sheng remain, discard the dregs. Add Yi Tang (Malt Sugar) 8 liang, divide into three doses, prepare every other day. If combined with various pills and powders, adding Huang Qi (Radix Astragali) 2 liang and Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 2 liang is preferred. If the patient has phlegm-fullness or loose stools, remove the Yi Tang; this view is shared by Yao.
Another prescription: One female black chicken, prepared for eating. Place 1 jin of fresh Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae) sliced, and 2 sheng of Yi Tang (Malt Sugar) inside the abdominal cavity. Tie tightly, place in a bronze steamer basket, and steam for the duration required to cook 5 sheng of rice. Remove shortly after, eat the meat, drink the juice, avoid salt. Perform this three times over three months. Yao states this is miraculous and effective, also stopping nocturnal sweating.
Another prescription: Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) 1 liang, Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 4 liang, Mai Men Dong (Tuber Ophiopogonis) 4 liang, Mu Li (Concha Ostreae) 2 liang, Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae) 20 pieces, E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini) 3 liang. Boil in 8 sheng of water until 2 sheng remain, take in two doses.

Boil in 9 sheng of water until 3 sheng remain, divide into four doses.
Another prescription: One Sheep Kidney (Ren), sliced, Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 1 sheng. Boil in 1 dou of water until 9 sheng remain. Take 1 sheng per dose, two to three times daily, finish within one day. In winter, divide over two days, can take twice daily.

Pound and mix with honey to make pills the size of Wutong seeds. Take 7 pills, three times daily, increasing to 10 pills.
This is Zhang Zhongjing's Ba Wei Shen Qi Wan (Eight-Ingredient Kidney-Qi Pill) formula, treating deficiency-labor insufficiency, severe damage causing polydipsia, lower back pain, lower abdominal urgency, and dysuria. It is also stated that long-term use involves removing Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) and adding Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) to treat severe wind-cold.
