During pregnancy, if there is a sudden stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, accompanied by chest tightness, shortness of breath, or even syncope resembling death, this condition is termed "Zhong E" (Sudden Evil Invasion), also commonly known as "Chang Sha" (Intestinal Sand). This occurs due to disharmony of Qi and Blood and weakness of Spirit, allowing pathogenic toxic Qi to invade. If a pregnant woman suffers from this, it can also damage the fetus. Xue Shi stated: For this syndrome, it is best to regulate and tonify the Righteous Qi. One may decoct and drink a single herb, Jin Yin Teng (Lonicerae Caulis, Honeysuckle Stem); or grind Zao Xin Tu (Caolin, Hearth Earth) into powder, take 2 qian each time, mixed with well water or plain boiled water. The text *Ji Yin Gang Mu* uses San Zhi Tang (Disperse Stagnation Decoction) to treat this condition. Additionally, Zhu Ai Fang (Boiled Mugwort Formula) is extremely effective for treating true Zhong E.
In the peak of summer during pregnancy, if one contracts the toxicity of heatstroke, the symptoms include fever with thirst, spontaneous sweating, mental confusion and lethargy, fatigue and weakness of the four limbs, and shortness of breath. Qing Shu He Tai Yin (Clear Summerheat and Harmonize Fetus Decoction) is the primary formula.
Contracting Dampness during pregnancy may result from walking early in the morning and being exposed to mist and dew, wading through water, long-term residence in low-lying damp areas, or bathing in cold water while sweating profusely. Symptoms include fever, vexing pain in bone joints, heaviness of the body, headache, and nasal congestion. Huang Qin Bai Zhu Tang (Scutellaria and Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction) is the primary formula.
Contracting Wind during pregnancy happens because of physical deficiency allowing invasion; this refers to Wind Qi from the eight directions of the four seasons coming from the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel), causing illness upon invasion. If Wind invades the skin, hair, meridians, and collaterals, it causes alternating chills and fever, pain in the head, neck, and body, or numbness and bi-syndrome in muscles. If Wind invades sinews and bones, it causes spasms and rigidity. If Wind invades the Zang-Fu organs, it causes sudden collapse and fainting, deviation of the mouth and eyes, convulsions of the hands and feet, locked jaw, and inability to speak. Pregnant women suffering from this should not use standard wind-dispelling methods; instead, the root principle must be tonifying deficiency and calming the fetus, combined with formulas that search out Wind. Sou Feng An Tai Yin (Search Out Wind and Calm Fetus Decoction) is used. However, true Wind stroke before delivery is rare, whereas Zi Xian (Eclampsia) is common. Their manifestations are indistinguishable. Physicians must examine carefully; only if it is truly Wind stroke should Sou Feng An Tai Yin be used; otherwise, it should be treated as Zi Xian.
San Zhi Tang (Disperse Stagnation Decoction) specifically treats stomach Qi injury and fetal damage caused by contact with evil Qi, resulting in abdominal pain so severe that the abdomen cannot be touched, and loss of appetite.
