The fetus in the womb is nourished and grown by the mother's Qi and Blood. The food consumed by the pregnant woman ultimately transforms into the Qi and Blood that nourish the fetus. Therefore, all foods that are contraindicated must be avoided and abstained from. If one indulges in specific tastes or develops a strong preference for certain foods, it not only disturbs the fetal Qi but also leads to difficult labor, potentially causing fetal deformity and maternal injury. One must be cautious and strictly observe these prohibitions.
Consuming mutton may result in the child having white sclerae and being prone to illness. Eating bean paste together with sparrow meat may cause the child to be born with dark spots or moles. Consuming sheep liver may lead to a life full of misfortune. Eating turtle meat may result in a short neck in the child and can damage the fetal vitality. Consuming dog meat may cause the child to be born without a cry. Eating carp, especially when combined with chicken eggs, may predispose the child to gan syndrome (pediatric malnutrition/digestive disorder). Eating crab may lead to breech presentation. Consuming wild game meat may result in a lack of sense of shame and promiscuous behavior in the child. Eating eggs together with mulberries may cause breech birth. Consuming ginger and Sichuan pepper may cause rapid breathing in the child and severe smallpox/toxin accumulation. Eating frogs and eels may result in hoarseness or aphonia in the child. Excessive consumption of ginger may cause polydactyly (extra fingers) and a tendency toward skin sores. Consuming donkey or horse meat may lead to post-term difficult labor. Drinking excessive distilled spirits may cause alopecia (hair loss) and blindness in the child. Eating rabbit meat may cause cleft lip. Eating chicken together with glutinous rice may result in the presence of tapeworms (Taenia saginata) in the child. Excessive salt intake may lead to craniotabes (delayed closure of fontanelles). Consuming ice water and excessive cold substances may delay the expulsion of the placenta. Eating colocasia esculenta (taro/coco yam) may dissipate fetal Qi. Eating bean paste together with Agastache rugosa (Huo Xiang) may cause abortion. Consuming any scaleless fish may lead to difficult labor. Eating various mushrooms may cause the child to suffer from infantile convulsions and die young. Consuming sparrow brain may cause night blindness (nyctalopia) in the child.
Excessive sour taste injures the Liver. Excessive bitter taste injures the Heart. Excessive sweet taste injures the Spleen. Excessive pungent taste injures the Lung. Excessive alkaline/bitter-sour taste injures the Kidney. Excessive joy injures the Heart and causes Qi to scatter. Excessive anger injures the Liver and causes Qi to rise upward. Excessive worry/intrusive thoughts injure the Spleen and cause Qi to stagnate. Excessive sorrow injures the Lung and causes Qi to knot. Excessive fear injures the Kidney and causes Qi to sink downward.
