Postpartum bone-steaming fever arises from excessive blood loss, leading to a deficiency of Yin and blood in the bones, which causes deficient fire to flare up, resulting in heat sensation deep within the bones. As stated in the *Classic of Internal Medicine* (*Huangdi Neijing*), "Febrile disease due to Yin deficiency" refers to this condition.
If lochia (blood clots) has not been completely expelled, one should only administer Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating New Blood), making slight modifications according to specific symptoms. This will promote the rise of abundant Yin and blood, causing the deficient fire to return to its normal meridians. If the pain caused by blood clots has subsided, it is appropriate to take Meilian Wan (Plum and Coptis Pill).
Chaihu Meilian Wan is essentially Qinggu San (Bone-Clearing Powder); taking it as a decoction yields excellent results.
Ingredients: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 qian), Hu Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma var. chinense, 2 qian), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, 2 qian), Wu Mei (Mume Fructus, 2 qian, pitted), Pig Spinal Cord (1 piece), Pig Gallbladder (1 unit), Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, 10 stalks, each 1 cun long).
Pulverize the first four herbs into powder. Separately, mash the pig spinal cord, pig gallbladder, and Cong Bai into a paste. Add one cup of urine from an uncircumcised boy (Tong Bian), and simmer until it becomes a thin paste. Then add the herbal powder and mix thoroughly to form pills, sized like mung beans. Take 30 pills per dose, washed down with clear water. If the above method fails to reduce heat sufficiently, increase the dosage. This formula is suitable for both men and women suffering from bone-steaming fever. Note that in the published excerpt, this formula was originally intended as a decoction.
Jiawei Dazao Wan treats bone-steaming consumptive fever. If the previous formula has been taken, there is no need to take this one.
Ingredients: Zi He Che (Human Placenta, 1 whole), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 8 fen), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 6 fen), Huai Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 2 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Hu Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma var. chinense, 5 qian), Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis, 8 fen, steamed with wine), Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus, 1 liang), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, 8 fen, steamed with wine).
Separately mash Mai Dong and Di Huang into a paste. Process Zi He Che until clean, then steam until cooked. Mash separately first, then combine with the other herbal powders and mix thoroughly. Add honey to form pills.
[Second Formula Ingredients]: Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 8 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 1 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 8 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 4 fen), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 8 fen), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian), Tian Dong (Asparagi Tuber, 2 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 2 qian), Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, 10 berries), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 2 qian), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, 6 fen, stir-fried), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 2 qian), Huai Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 2 qian), Huai Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 2 qian).
