In general, when men reach the age of 64 (eight times eight), their Tian Gui (substances promoting growth, development, and reproduction) is exhausted. Those who can still father children after this age possess a congenital endowment different from the norm. When women reach the age of 49 (seven times seven), their Tian Gui ceases. Those who can still conceive after this age do so because their Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) is vigorous and their Qi and Blood are abundant. However, for the elderly to propagate their lineage, there are specific methods. An elderly man must sleep in separate beds to maintain sexual abstinence, absolutely avoiding nocturnal emissions or secret leakage. He should use herbs to support Shen Zhen (Spiritual Truth/Essence) and consolidate the root, waiting for his wife's menstrual period to conceive. This ensures that the foundation of Xian Tian Yuan Yang (Pre-Heaven Primordial Yang), which initiates creation, becomes thick and robust. For a young but weak woman to conceive, she must take Gu Tai Yin (Fetus-Securing Decoction) for more than twenty doses each month to nourish her weakened Tian Zhen (True Essence). This ensures that the source of Kun Yuan (Earthly Origin) generating life becomes sufficient. Merely tonifying a weak husband and wife is insufficient; the aforementioned Two Formulas of Pre-Heaven and various tonic pills have proven highly effective through experience.
Bu Yang Su Feng Wan (Phoenix Pill Tonifying Yang, greatly tonifying the elderly):
Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Fu Ling (Poria), Zhi Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma processed with honey), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Ba Ji Tian (Morindae Officinalis Radix), Po Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus), Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus), Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix), Rong Zhong (Cynomorii Herba), Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathulae Radix), Guang Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Huai Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Hu Gu (Ossum Tigris - *Note: Use legal substitutes due to conservation laws*), each one liang (above nineteen ingredients); Huai Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) four liang, Shu Di (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) four liang, Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) four liang, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) four liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) three liang, Gan Gou Qi (Lycii Fructus) three liang.
Steam one ten-year-old line hen until cooked, remove skin and oil, dry the meat and bones by baking, then combine with the above herbs and refine with honey to make pills. (Highly beneficial for those with Qi and Blood deficiency.)
When a woman conceives in the first month, the fetus resembles a dewdrop. This represents Tai Ji moving to generate Yang, where Heaven generates Water, termed "Jing Zu Jue Yin" (Tibia-Foot Jueyin), governed by the Liver Mai (Vessel). The menstrual flow stops, and dietary preferences change slightly. In the second month, it resembles peach petals. This represents Tai Ji stillness generating Yang, where Earth generates Fire, termed "Zu Jue Yin" (Foot Jueyin), governed by the Gallbladder Mai. If nausea and vomiting occur with reduced appetite, it is named E Zu (Morning Sickness/Obstruction), clearly indicating pregnancy. Craving specific foods indicates deficiency in a specific Zang organ; for example, craving sour foods indicates Liver Jing deficiency, which can only nourish the fetus but not the mother herself. In the third month, it resembles clear mucus. The nose and genital organs form first, distinguishing male and female. It is governed by Hand Shao Yin Xiang Huo (Ministerial Fire), and the fetal Qi is most prone to movement. In the fourth month, it begins to receive the essence of Water to form blood vessels. The physical form is complete, hands and feet develop sequentially, governed by the Hand Shao Yang Mai. In the fifth month, it begins to receive the essence of Fire. Bones, sinews, and limbs are formed, hair begins to grow, governed by the Foot Tai Yin Mai. In the sixth month, it receives the essence of Metal to form sinews. The mouth and ears are formed, governed by the Foot Yang Ming Mai. In the seventh month, it receives the essence of Wood to form bones. The Hun (Ethereal Soul) wanders, and the left hand moves, governed by the Hand Tai Yin Mai. In the eighth month, it receives the essence of Earth. Skin and the nine orifices are formed, the Po (Corporeal Soul) wanders, and the right hand moves, governed by the Hand Yang Ming Mai. In the ninth month, it receives the essence of Stone. All joints are complete, the body turns three times, governed by the Foot Shao Yin Mai. In the tenth month, Shen Qi (Spiritual Energy) is fully prepared, leading to birth, governed by the Foot Tai Yang Mai. Only the organs governed by Hand Shao Yin and Hand Tai Yang function through non-action (Wu Wei). Miscarriage must be guarded against in the third, fifth, and seventh months; it is appropriate to take herbs that clear heat, cool blood, and secure the fetus. Women belong to the Yin category and prioritize Blood. They correspond to Tai Yin above and sea tides below, menstruating once a month; hence they are called Yue Shui (Monthly Water), Yue Xin (Monthly Trust), or Jing Yue (Menstruation). "Jing" means regularity; "Tian Gui" refers to the water generated by Heaven One. Irregularities such as early or late onset, or obstruction or patency, are pathological conditions. There are also variations contrary to norms that ancient texts did not mention, which must be known. Some experience hematemesis or epistaxis during their period; others have bleeding from the eyes. This is called Dao Jing (Reverse Menstruation). Some menstruate once every three months, called Ji Jing (Quarterly Menstruation). Some once a year, called Bi Nian (Avoiding Year). Some never menstruate throughout their lives yet can conceive, called An Jing (Hidden Menstruation). Some continue to menstruate monthly after conception and give birth, called Sheng Tai (Abundant Fetus). Some experience heavy bleeding monthly after conception without miscarriage, called Lou Tai (Leaking Fetus). It is normal for Tian Gui to arrive at age 14 (two sevens) and cease at age 49 (seven sevens). However, some women give birth at ages 12 or 13, which is a variation. Physicians should pay attention to these cases.
