Whenever postpartum dryness of the mouth and throat with thirst is accompanied by difficult urination, it is due to blood depletion causing excessive sweating, and fatigue injuring the Spleen, which fails to transport fluids for the Stomach. Consequently, the Qi of transformation and generation stagnates, and the directive for seepage and excretion does not function. Thus, there is no fluid circulation in the upper part, resulting in symptoms of dry throat and thirst; in the lower part, the Bladder is closed and stagnant, leading to obstruction of the water passages. Treatment should assist the Spleen and benefit the Lung, regulating the ascending and descending of Qi and Blood. When Qi and Blood circulate smoothly, Yang ascends and Yin descends, naturally generating fluids and facilitating smooth passage. If one mistakes thirst for excess Fire and uses Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) to descend it; or mistakes urinary retention for Water stagnation and uses Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) to unblock it, this is not only ineffective but harmful.
Note: Urination depends on Qi transformation. The classic states: "When Qi transforms, it can be excreted." Therefore, tonifying Qi to generate fluids is indeed a profound truth. The Bladder is the residence where fluids are stored; if True Yang is insufficient and Yuan Qi does not ascend, excretion will not occur. Hence, tonifying Qi and filling Essence is the superior approach.

If the puerpera is robust with intense heat and difficult urination, temporarily add Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Huashi (Talcum, each 1 qian).
Whenever frequent urination occurs postpartum, it is due to pre-existing cold qi in the abdomen, triggered by deficiency. Sangpiaoxiao San (Mantis Egg Case Powder) is suitable, or Yizhiren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus) can be stir-fried, powdered, and taken with rice water at a dose of 2 qian. If dribbling pain occurs, it is also due to puerperal weakness with cold qi lodging in the abdomen; treat with Baimaogen Tang (Imperatae Rhizoma Decoction).
