Duhuo Jisheng Decoction (Sanguisorba and Taxillus Decoction): Treats lower back and back pain. Lower back and back pain are all caused by deficiency of Kidney Qi, lying on cold and damp ground, and exposure to wind pathogen. If not treated promptly, the pathogenic qi will flow into the feet and knees, causing hemiplegia, cold bi syndrome (painful obstruction due to cold), flaccidity, heaviness, and severe pain, or lower back pain, jiaoqi (gouty arthritis/foot swelling), and tendon cramping with heaviness. It is advisable to take this decoction immediately.
Ingredients: Duhuo Radix (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis) 3 liang (some versions say 2 liang); Sangshang Jisheng Herba (Herba Taxilli) (if unavailable, Xu Duan Radix can be used as a substitute); Duzhu Cortex Eucommiae (Cortex Eucommiae) (chopped and stir-fried until fibers break); Niuxi Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (steeped in wine); Xixin Radix Asari (Asarum Root); Qinjiao Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae (Gentian Root); Baifuling Poria (Poria); Guizhi Ramulus Cinnamomi (Cinnamon Twig); Fangfeng Radix Saposhnikoviae (Saposhnikovia Root); Chuanxiong Rhizoma Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome); Renshen Radix Ginseng (Ginseng Root); Gancao Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Prepared Licorice Root); Danggui Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Angelica Root); Baishaoyao Radix Paeoniae Alba (White Peony Root); Shugan Dihuang Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Prepared Rehmannia Root). All the above ingredients are 2 liang each.
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above herbs into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add one da zhan (approx. 400ml) of water, decoct until only 6 fen (approx. 240ml) remains, remove the dregs, and take warm. After taking the medicine, keep the body warm and avoid getting cold. For those with Qi deficiency accompanied by diarrhea, remove Gan Dihuang (Raw Rehmannia Root). Additionally, when taking the decoction, one may take Shuobo Folium (Folium Polygoni Multiflori), roast it over fire until thick and hot, place it thickly on a mat, sit on it while undressed while it is hot, and repeat cooling and roasting. In winter, use the root; in spring, use the stem, roasted and sat upon for best results. Other locations affected by wind-dampness can also use this method, but thin moxibustion/warming is inferior to the Shuobo steaming method. Wind-dampness in other parts of the body can also be treated with this method. Women who suffer from abdominal pain preventing movement, as well as lower back and leg pain, cramping preventing bending, and weakness/bi syndrome immediately after childbirth, are especially suitable for taking this formula to dispel wind and eliminate blood stasis.
Yiyi Tang (Coix Seed Decoction): Treats wind-damp-toxic qi attacking both feet, causing heaviness, or immediate edema, or dry skin with withered hair, purple and broken flesh, drawing pain in bones and tendons, chest oppression, qi distension, vertigo, excessive sleepiness, and dim vision.
Ingredients: Yiyiren Semen Coicis (Coix Seed) lightly stir-fried 8 liang; Baifuling Poria (Poria) 5 fen; Fangfeng Radix Saposhnikoviae (Saposhnikovia Root) 5 fen; Niuxi Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (steeped in wine); Guizhi Ramulus Cinnamomi (Cinnamon Twig); Wujia Pi Cortex Acanthopanacis (Acanthopanax Bark). Each is 6 fen; Duhuo Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis) 5 fen; Xuanshen Radix Scrophulariae (Scrophularia Root) 5 liang; Shigypsum Fibrosum (Gypsum Fibrosum) 5 liang; Zhike Fructus Citri Reticulatae (Citrus Fruit) 4 liang (bran-fried, remove seeds); Shengma Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Cimicifuga Rhizome) 6 liang; Lingyangjiao Cornu Saigae Tataricae (Saiga Horn); Hanfangji Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae (Stephania Root); Mahuang Herba Ephedrae (Ephedra Herb) de-stemmed 5 liang.
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above herbs into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add one zhan and a half (approx. 600ml) of water, soak overnight, decoct at dawn until only 8 fen (approx. 480ml) remains, remove the dregs, and take warm. Do not restrict the time of administration.
Treats heat in the Heart Meridian causing strangury (dysuria) with涩 (astringency/stagnation) and blockage, as well as various types of strangury:
Ingredients: Shengdihuang Radix Rehmanniae Recens (Fresh Rehmannia Root) 4 liang; Mutong Caulis Akebiae (Akebia Stem); Huangqin Radix Scutellariae (Scutellaria Root). Each is 2 liang.
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above herbs into a fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 30 pills per dose with warm water.
Treats jiaoqi (gouty arthritis/foot swelling) causing涩 (astringency/stagnation) of urination, swelling of both feet, and qi distension:
Ingredients: Chixiaodou Semen Phaseoli Angularis (Angular Bean Seed) half sheng; Sangbaipi Cortex Mori Radicis (Mulberry Root Bark) 2 liang (chopped); Zisu Ye Folium Perillae (Perilla Leaf) one握 (handful, chopped); Shengjiang Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) half liang.
Preparation and Administration: Add three sheng (approx. 600-700ml) of water, decoct until the beans are cooked. Remove and eat the beans, filter out the dregs, and drink the remaining liquid.
