Bitter, slightly salty. Cold in nature. Non-toxic. Born from the qi of extreme yin. Descending. Yin in quality. The stems and leaves are used together.
[Maintaining Health] Primarily treats headache caused by epidemic qi, high fever, and mouth ulcers. (*Mingyi Bielu*) Treats alternating chills and fever caused by warm epidemics. (Zhen Quan) Treats wind-heat toxin, mental restlessness, thirst, and cold damage syndromes.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart and Stomach meridians. It is a substance that resolves heat and detoxifies. (The principal herb for clearing heat in these two meridians.)

[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong in *Bencao Jing Shu* stated: This is a yin-cold substance, used only to eliminate epidemic heat diseases. It should not be applied to individuals with deficiency-cold and weak Spleen function.
[Qing Dai / Indigo Naturalis (Processed)]
Salty. Cold in nature. Non-toxic. This refers to the purple-green foam floating on the surface of dye vats. The market often substitutes it with dried sediment, which contains lime (Duan Shi). It is advisable to purify the sediment by washing away the lime using the water-flying method. This sediment is made from Indigo plants and lime. Its flavor and nature differ slightly from raw Indigo leaves, but its efficacy in stopping bleeding, extracting toxins, and killing parasites is superior to that of Indigo.
Indigo leaf juice refers to the juice extracted from fresh Indigo leaves capable of dyeing blue. If unavailable at the moment, juice soaked from blue cloth is also effective.
[Maintaining Health] Primarily eliminates food stagnation. (Zhu Danxi) Primarily drains Liver fire, disperses pent-up fire in the five Zang organs, resolves wind-heat accumulated in the middle and lower Jiao, treats hematemesis, hemoptysis, dysentery with blood, pediatric convulsions... [text cuts off]. Stops epistaxis and other bleeding, treats traumatic injuries with blood stasis, relieves irritability and thirst, treats postpartum blood dizziness in women, and high fever or heat-type malnutrition in children. (Meng Shen) [Blue Cloth] Resolves various toxins, epidemic heat toxins, and pediatric erysipelas; drink the soaked juice. Burn to ash and apply topically to treat malignant sores. (*Yi Jian*)
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Liver meridian. It is a substance that clears heat and detoxifies. (Also cools the Blood.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Zhu Danxi stated: Indigo belongs to Water, enabling damaged blood to return to the collaterals. An Chang stated: The flavors and natures of all types of Indigo are not far apart, thus all can kill parasites and remove... [text cuts off].
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong in *Bencao Jing Shu* stated: For any blood disorders, if they are not due to excess heat in the Blood level, but rather due to yin deficiency with internal heat, where Yang has no anchor, and fire flares upward due to emptiness, causing spitting and coughing...
