[Radicis Polygalae]
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. It is generated by responding to the Yang Qi of Heaven and obtaining the fragrant and vigorous Qi of Earth. Its action can ascend and descend; it belongs to Yang. It pairs well with Poria (Fuling), Malva Seed (Dongkuizi), and Dragon Bone (Longgu). It is incompatible with Pearl Zhenzhu) and Veratrum (Lilu).
[Indications] Primarily treats cough with counterflow Qi and damage to the Middle Jiao, tonifies deficiencies, expels pathogenic factors, unblocks the nine orifices, enhances wisdom, makes the ears and eyes acute, prevents forgetfulness, strengthens willpower, and increases strength.
Prevents mental confusion.
Treats carbuncles and sores.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart and Kidney meridians. It is a substance that tonifies both Water and Fire. (It can conduct Kidney Qi upward to reach the Heart.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Zhongchun stated: When Heart Qi is weak and Heart Blood is insufficient, one becomes timid and easily frightened, experiences many nightmares during sleep, and the Spirit does not reside in its dwelling, leading to palpitations (Zhengchong), forgetfulness, loss of will, impotence, etc.
Ao's Note: Former sages all regarded Radix Polygalae as a herb for the Heart, a view adhered to to this day. Only Haicang considered it a herb for the Qi aspect of the Kidney meridian, and Li Shizhen also believed it enters the Kidney meridian... [text missing] ...thereby allowing Kidney Qi to connect upward to the Heart. Therefore, whenever Kidney Essence is abundant and Kidney Qi is vigorous, enabling it to ascend to the Heart, it is because Heart Qi was first sufficient and descended to nourish the Kidney. Thus, strengthening willpower, benefiting essence, and treating forgetfulness, although functions stored in the Kidney, are they not also related to the Heart? Hence, former sages called Radix Polygalae a Heart herb based on its origin, while the other two schools called it a Kidney herb based on its efficacy. Therefore, I consider it to enter the Heart and Kidney meridians: on one hand, showing the Heart as primary and the Kidney as responsive; on the other hand, showing that the Heart and Kidney cannot be separated.
[Contraindications] Mi Xiyong (author of Jing Shu) stated: For cases where there is Excess Fire in the Heart meridian, belonging to Excess Heat of the Heart family, which should be treated with Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian) and Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Sheng Dihuang), one must prohibit the use of herbs that assist Yang Qi such as Radix Ginseng (Renshen) and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu).
[Processing] Lei Gong stated: When using it, remove the heart/core, otherwise it causes restlessness and stuffiness. Soak in Licorice Decoction (Gancao Tang) overnight, then bake and use.
[Radicis Morindae Officinalis]
Taste: Pungent, Sweet. Nature: Slightly Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. It inherits the true Yang Qi of Earth's virtue and is born combining with the mild Yang Qi of Heaven. Its action can ascend and descend; it belongs to Yang.
Rubus Fruit (Fupenzi) serves as an assistant. It is adverse to Polyporus Umbellatus (Leiwuan) and Salvia Miltiorrhiza (Danshen).
[Indications] Primarily treats severe wind-pathogenic factors, impotence with inability to erect, strengthens sinews and bones, calms the five Zang organs, tonifies the Middle Jiao, enhances intelligence, and benefits Qi. (From *Ben Cao Jing*) Treats wandering wind on the head and face... [text missing] ...Qi, treats... [text missing]
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Kidney meridian. It is a substance that strengthens Yin and benefits essence. (A herb for the Blood aspect of the Kidney meridian, supplements primal Yang, dispels wind and dampness.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Zhongchun stated: Among the disorders of the five Zang organs, the Kidney is the master. Descending Qi causes Fire to descend; when Fire descends, Water ascends. Yin and Yang dwell mutually, and Spirit and Essence remain guarded within.

[Processing] Lei Gong stated: When using it, first soak in Lycium Fruit (Gouqi) decoction overnight until soft. Then soak in wine for one shichen (approx. 2 hours), drain, stir-fry together with Chrysanthemum flowers until scorched yellow, and remove the chrysanthemum.
