[Xiangru (Moslae Herba)]
Taste: Pungent. Nature: Slightly warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. It is generated by absorbing the Qi of Metal and Water, as well as the climatic energies of summer and autumn. Its action can be ascending or descending; it belongs to Yang.
[Indications] Primarily treats abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea caused by cholera-like disorders (Huo Luan). (From *Bie Lu*) To treat sudden muscle cramps due to wind-heat, boil the herb in water and consume half a sheng at once to stop the symptoms. Alternatively, grind into powder and take with water.
Treats epistaxis (nosebleed).
Treats cold and heat sensations associated with podagra/jiaogixi (Hong Kong foot/foot disease).
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart, Spleen, and Stomach meridians. It is a substance for clearing summer-heat and promoting diuresis/dampness resolution. (Also has a dispersing function.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Zhu Danxi stated: Xiangru possesses the characteristics of Metal and Water, having the efficacy of penetrating from top to bottom. It resolves summer-heat and promotes urination, and is also very effective in treating edema. Varieties with large leaves are more potent. Only suitable... If... deficiency... use... take to...
[Processing] Lei Gong said: When using, remove the roots and use only the leaves. Do not expose to fire. Sun-dry before use.
[Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma)]
Taste: Sweet, Salty. Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. It is endowed with the dry Qi of the Earth and the winter Qi of Heaven. Its action is descending; it belongs to Yin. Another view holds that it is Yin with slight Yang.
[Indications] Primarily treats bi-syndrome caused by wind-cold-dampness, difficulty in lactation, and elimination of fluid retention. (From *Ben Jing*) Tonifies deficiency and damage from the five labors, eliminates fullness and masses in the five zang organs, raises Yin Qi, stops seminal emission, eliminates thirst and strangury, tonifies women... turbidity, heart...
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Kidney and Bladder meridians. It is a substance for渗湿 (percolating dampness) and unblocking orifices. (Also has a purgative function; a holy medicine for removing dampness, promoting diuresis, and draining fire.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Kou Zongshi said: Excessive consumption causes dim vision because it moves and removes water from the body. There is no one who takes Zexie San without experiencing increased urination. Since urination increases... Kidney Qi... used in pills.
Zhao Xianke's Note: In Liuwei Dihuang Wan, warming and cooling agents are paired, astringent and percolating agents are paired, and consolidating and purging agents are paired. Removing any single ingredient would lead to imbalance and deficiency. Therefore, formulas added or modified by later generations...
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong in *Bencao Jing Shu* stated: For patients without dampness or fluid retention, but with Yin deficiency, as well as those with exhausted Kidney Qi, declining Yang leading to spontaneous seminal discharge, insecure Kidney Qi causing spermatorrhea, eye...
[Processing] Li Shizhen in *Bencao Gangmu* said: When using, mix with salt water or soak in wine, then sun-dry before use.
[Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma)]
Taste: Pungent. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. It is generated in early summer by absorbing the Qi of the Six Yangs, combined with the pungent taste of Metal. Its action is ascending; it belongs to Yang. Avoid maltose, mutton, and ironware.
[Indications] Primarily treats bi-syndrome caused by wind-cold-dampness, cough with rebellious Qi. Opens the heart orifice, tonifies the five zang organs, unblocks the nine orifices, brightens eyes and ears, facilitates voice production. Primarily treats deafness, carbuncles... decoction... stops abdominal pain... (From Li Haogu)
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart and Spleen meridians. It is a substance for opening and unblocking. (Also has a dispersing function.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Zhou Dianxian said: This is a herb for the Heart and Liver. It is used for those with insufficient Heart Qi. According to the principle "tonify the mother when deficient," since the Liver suffers from tension, pungent herbs are used to tonify it, this is... satisfaction... obstruction... however, thought...
Zhao Xianke's Note: Using Shichangpu to treat Jin Kou Li (dysentery with inability to eat) has proven effective repeatedly. Truly an excellent method. I specifically highlight this point.
[Processing] Lei Gong said: When using, harvest the rhizomes growing on stones. They should be tender, yellow, tight, hard, with nine nodes per inch. Scrape off the yellow-black hard skin and nodes using a copper knife. Together...
