[Da] The Lung governs Qi, and the Qi of the five Zang organs and six Fu organs all derives from it. After childbirth, Qi and Blood are damaged, and the functions of the Zang and Fu organs are impaired. If Wind-Cold combats with Qi, causing Qi to reverse upward, and combined with Spleen deficiency leading to accumulated Cold and latent Cold in the Stomach, eating hot foods causes Cold and Heat energies to clash. This results in Qi Jue (Qi reversal) and obstruction, leading to hiccup (e-ni). The Spleen governs the Middle Jiao, serves as the gate of the Three Jiao, and is the granary of the five Zang organs, storing water and grain. If Yin and Yang Qi are deficient, causing Ying-Wei Qi (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) to reverse, this disease arises. The Classics state: "Hiccup and belching are generated by Stomach Cold." If medication is ineffective, moxibustion on Qimen (LR14) for three moxa cones will surely cure it. Qimen is the major collateral point of the Stomach.
[Xue] The aforementioned syndrome belongs to the ominous presentation of Stomach Qi deficiency and Cold. If the following prescription yields no response, urgently administer Shenfu Decoction (Ginseng and Aconite Decoction), and there have been cases of recovery from near-death states.
Shenfu Decoction (See Self-Sweating section above.)
Dingxiang San (Clove Powder): Treats postpartum mental restlessness and incessant coughing and hiccupping.
Ingredients: Dingxiang (Clove), Baidoukou Ren (Cardamomi Fructus Rotundus), Fulonggan (Terra Fusca) [each half tael], Fulonggan (one tael).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Mix one qian with decoction of Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) and Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) and take orally. Repeat administration after walking for a distance equivalent to five li.
Shilian San (Lotus Seed Powder) (See Vomiting section.)
"Chanbao" (Treasures of Childbirth) prescription for postpartum hiccup persisting for three days, approaching death:
Ingredients: Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Juice) [three he].
Preparation and Administration: Decoct together to obtain two he. Simultaneously heat hands over high fire and massage the back. Apply the medicinal juice while hot until exhausted. This is excellent.
Another prescription for postpartum hiccup:
Take one dried persimmon, chop finely. Decoct with one zhan of water until reduced to six fen. Drink while hot in small sips.
Another prescription:
Take three or four pieces of verdigris from ancient wall mirrors. Decoct with a small zhan of water until reduced to half a small zhan. Take while hot.
Qianghuo San (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix Powder) (from "Lingyuan"): Treats hiccup.
Ingredients: Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, stir-fried) [each half tael], Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Baijiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, processed) [each two qian and half].
Preparation and Administration: Grind the five herbs into powder. Take two qian per dose with one zhan of water and a pinch of salt. Decoct for more than ten boils. Take hot; one dose stops the hiccup.
"Buyi" (Supplemental Remedies) treats postpartum hiccup: Chupi Tang (Tangerine Peel Decoction), Da Chupi Tang (Greater Tangerine Peel Decoction), and Xiao Chupi Tang (Lesser Tangerine Peel Decoction) are all effective.
The above prescriptions should be used according to the differentiation of Cold, Heat, Deficiency, and Excess. For Cold patterns, Dingxiang (Clove), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) are suitable. For Heat patterns, Ganshi (Dried Persimmon) and Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam) are suitable. For Excess patterns, Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Chupi (Tangerine Peel) are suitable. For Deficiency patterns, Renshen (Ginseng Radix) is suitable, and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) may be added for severe cases. Misapplication leads to regret too late to remedy; exercise caution.
