[Da Lun] Postpartum wind-stroke accompanied by mental confusion arises because the Heart governs blood vessels, and Qi and Blood circulate through Ying and Wei (Defensive and Nutritive Qi) to the Zang-Fu organs, traversing all meridians. Childbirth injures both Qi and Blood, leading to deficiency in all five Zang organs and insufficiency of Ying and Wei. Consequently, Wind pathogen takes advantage of this deficiency, causing the Heart Spirit to lose its residence, resulting in unstable mental confusion.
[Xue Ji's Commentary] For the aforementioned syndrome, the primary treatment should be greatly tonifying Qi and Blood, assisted by the following prescriptions. This is because the manifestation of "Wind" is a false image caused by extreme deficiency; securing the root source ensures that various diseases recede spontaneously. If one treats only the Wind, it will hasten danger. A certain puerpera suffered from the aforementioned syndrome, presenting with night sweats, spontaneous sweating, fever, afternoon tidal fever, yellowish-white complexion, and coldness in the four limbs. This indicated deficiency of both Qi and Blood. Ba Zhen Tang was ineffective; subsequently, Shi Quan Da Bu Tang and Jia Wei Gui Pi Tang were used, which proved effective. Later, due to labor and anger, she experienced syncope and unconsciousness, left eye traction and tightness, twitching of both lips, and urinary incontinence. I reasoned that Liver Fire was blazing. Using Shi Quan Da Bu Tang added with Gouteng (Uncaria Rhynchophylla) and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) stabilized the condition. Subsequently, using Shi Quan Da Bu Tang and Chen Sha Yuan Zhi Wan led to recovery.
