(The treatment principles for miscellaneous diseases in men and women are the same. These two volumes of formulas and discussions, although originating from gynecological texts, contain content omitted by many miscellaneous disease texts, hence they are preserved.)
Injury caused by overexertion and fatigue is treated with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), which belongs to acute illness. If left untreated, symptoms such as fever, tidal fever, night sweats, and cough may arise, termed Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption). If further neglected, symptoms like dry skin and falling hair, inability of food to nourish muscles, heat in the marrow, and amenorrhea may appear, termed Zhai (a severe chronic consumptive disease). Bone-steaming fever progressing to Chuan Shi Lao (Transmitting Corpse Labor) constitutes a distinct category of disease; its origin does not lie in overexertion, yet its consequences can be devastating, potentially leading to the extinction of a family. I have already detailed and listed these in the first volume of miscellaneous diseases. However, since men primarily rely on Jing (Essence) and women primarily rely on Xue (Blood), the causes of disease differ, and thus treatments must also differ; therefore, specific methods should be established separately. Chen's *Liangfang* (Good Prescriptions) categorizes Lao Zhai (Labor Affliction), Gu Zheng Lao (Bone Steaming Labor), Xue Feng Lao (Blood Wind Labor), Qi Xu Feng Lao (Qi Deficiency Wind Labor), Leng Lao (Cold Labor), Re Lao (Heat Labor), Ke Re (Guest Heat), etc., which inevitably confuses later generations, leaving them at a loss. The following corrections are presented herein. Physicians should refer to the Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption) and Chuan Shi Lao (Transmitting Corpse Labor) sections in miscellaneous diseases when applying these, thereby avoiding omissions.
[Principles for Initial Illness]
[Bao Ming Ji] In treating female Xu Lao, *Ju Fang* (Formulas of the Bureau) states there are six categories from beginning to end. For example, Da Sheng San (Great Sage Powder) and Shu Di Huang Wan (Prepared Rehmannia Pill) treat Xu Lao without heat. Mid-treatment involves Mudan Jian Wan (Moutan Decoction Pill), taken fasting or before meals, and Renshen Jingjie San (Ginseng and Schizonepeta Powder), taken after meals before sleep, treating Xu Lao with heat.
[Dai Yuanli] There is blood deficiency resulting from post-illness, and constitutional blood deficiency. Such patients experience alternating chills and fever, or heat in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), weakness in speech, sallow complexion, dizziness, and vertigo, leading to various ailments. Use Xiong Gui Tang (Ligusticum and Angelica Decoction) with a small amount of mutton; or administer Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Ingredients Great Tonifying Decoction), Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), or Yangrong Tang (Nourish the Ying Decoction). If blood is deficient but Qi is vigorous, Yi Qi Tang (Suppress Qi Decoction), i.e., Cyperi Rhizoma powder, is suitable.

[Deficiency Labor Without Heat]
[Wang Jiezhi] Female Cold Labor belongs to Qi and Blood deficiency, internal organ deficiency and cold, leading to cold pain below the umbilicus, cold hands and feet, irregular menstruation, indigestion, occasional vomiting, aversion to cold and fever, joint soreness, emaciation, and sallow complexion.
[Xue Ji] The aforementioned symptoms include true cold inside and out, but also true heat inside and out, true heat inside with false cold outside, and true cold inside with false heat outside. If digestion is difficult, stools are loose, borborygmus and abdominal pain occur, food is feared as cold, hands and feet are reversed cold, face is yellow with vomiting, and wind-cold is feared, this is true cold inside and out. Use Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Regulate the Middle Decoction) to restore Yang, and Bawei Dihuang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) to strengthen Fire. If diet is normal, stools are firm, chest and abdomen are distended, food is preferred cold, hands and feet are hot, face is red with vomiting, and wind-cold is not feared, this is true heat inside and out. Use Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Detoxification Decoction) to eliminate Yang, and Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) to strengthen Water. If diet is normal, stools are firm, chest and abdomen are distended, food is preferred cold, hands and feet are reversed cold, face is yellow with vomiting, and wind-cold is feared, this is true heat inside with false cold outside. Also use Jiedu Tang and Liuwei Wan. If appetite is low, stools are loose, acid regurgitation and belching occur, chest and abdomen are full, hands and feet are reversed cold, face is red with vomiting, and wind-cold is feared, this is true cold inside with false heat outside. Also use Fuzi Lizhong Tang and Bawei Wan. Seek the root cause to treat. The Classic says: "Benefit the source of Fire to dissipate Yin shadows; strengthen the master of Water to control Yang brilliance." If one does not understand the insufficiency of true Water and Fire, and indiscriminately uses cold and hot medicines, old diseases will remain, and new ones will arise. "Shu" (belonging) refers to the Master, meaning Heart and Kidney. Seeking the belonging means seeking Heart and Kidney for Water and Fire insufficiency. The source of Fire is the root of Yang Qi, which is the Heart. The master of Water is the root of Yin Qi, which is the Kidney. It does not mean Fire corresponds to Heart, Yuan to Liver, Water to Kidney, and Zhu to Lung. One woman had poor appetite, vomiting, spitting phlegm, yellow face, abdominal pain, irregular menstruation, and reversed cold hands and feet. This was true cold inside and out; treated with Liujunzi Tang plus Fuzi and Muxiang, cured. Another woman suddenly vomited sour water, felt internal heat and thirst, could not eat, only liked cold water, face was green-red, and medicine was vomited immediately upon entry. This was true heat inside and out. After ten days, only Huanglian was decocted and drunk. Slowly added Baizhu, Fuling, Chenpi, Danggui, and Gancao. After over a month, she could drink rice soup and congee, and recovered with regulation. Another woman had internal heat, thirst, constipation, fear of wind-cold, and reversed cold hands and feet. This was true heat inside with false cold outside. First used Huanglian Jiedu Tang, then Liuwei Wan, cured. Another woman initially had phlegm-panting, heat, and thirst. Doctors used cooling and Qi-dispersing methods, causing muscle wasting and Qi depletion. By Jiachen year, Wood was prosperous, Phlegm was abundant, body was hot, mouth was ulcerated, abdomen was distended, spirit was confused, nearly died from starvation. This was deficiency heat without Fire. Administered medicine to strengthen Water and generate Earth, effective immediately. Years later, early summer, head drooped when sitting, back felt cold and windy when lying, irritable, dizzy, coughing and vomiting phlegm, numb and cold hands and feet. This was true cold inside with false heat outside. Administered large tonifying Jiang-Fu (Ginger-Aconite) medicine. Within 3-4 doses, major symptoms subsided. Continued with modified previous medicine, cured.
Han Mao treated his sister-in-law, over thirty years old, who had eighteen pregnancies, nine miscarriages, eight stillbirths/infant deaths. Due to family crisis, excessive shock and worry led to unconsciousness, ulcers on lips/tongue/throat, lower body collapse, profuse leukorrhea. For forty days, occasionally conscious, suicidal, unbearable grief. Doctors using cooling agents worsened lower symptoms; those using heating agents or fumigation caused fainting from heat. This was Wang Yang (Loss of Yang) syndrome. Urgently used 9 qian of salt-cooked large Fuzi as sovereign, processed with Bohe and Fangfeng, assisted by Jiang, Rougui, Chuanxiong, Danggui. Decocted in water, cooled in well water, given cold. Before finishing the dose, slept soundly through the night, woke up recognizing people. Asked: What is this? Answered: Formulas state, "False against false, true against true." Upper is false heat, so follow with false cold medicine; lower is true cold, so oppose with true heat medicine. Thus upper and lower harmonize, disease resolves. Subsequently used Nv Jin Dan mixed with 2-3 formulas to remove disease and regulate Yuan Qi. Soon, gave birth to two sons. (The above discussions and cases relate to Xu Lao but demonstrate the great method of varying cold and heat treatments, which must be carefully observed.)
