[Da] To treat a pregnant woman with bell-like rumbling sounds in the abdomen, use soil from the front and back of a mouse hole, grind it into fine powder, mix with musk (Moschus), and take two qian mixed with wine. The patient will be cured immediately.
[Bu Yi] To treat fetal crying within the womb of a pregnant woman, decoct Rhizoma Coptidis (Chuan Huanglian) strongly to obtain the juice, and let the mother sip it frequently.
[Xue] According to *Baoyuan* (Treasures of Obstetrics): When a fetus cries in the womb, the treatment also involves using soil from a mouse hole in an empty room or drinking strong decoction of Rhizoma Coptidis (Chuan Huanglian). The crying stops. I believe this refers to the aforementioned condition. It is also stated: A nodule on the umbilical cord may be held in the infant's mouth. If the pregnant woman climbs high and raises her arms, the nodule may slip out of the infant's mouth, causing noise. Instruct the pregnant woman to bend her waist to the ground as if picking up an object; once the nodule re-enters the infant's mouth, the crying stops. However, since Rhizoma Coptidis (Chuan Huanglian) is cold in nature and Moschus opens the orifices, their use should be carefully considered.
[Su] The Yellow Emperor asked: What happens if toxic drugs are used on a pregnant woman? Qibo replied: If there is a pathological accumulation (Gu), neither the mother nor the fetus will be harmed. The Emperor said: I wish to hear the reason behind this; what does it mean? Qibo said: For large accumulations and masses, attacking agents may be used, but stop when more than half of the pathology has been reduced; exceeding this limit leads to death. From *Zhi Yao Yuan Lun*.
[Dan] For blood masses as large as a plate, where strong purgatives are difficult to administer during pregnancy, this formula is indicated.
Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu Zi) (boiled in vinegar, 4 liang)
Persicae Semen (Taoren) (skin and tip removed, 1 liang)
Tapiocae Medulla (Haifen) (boiled in vinegar, 2 liang)
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) (1 liang)
Grind all into powder, form pills with wheat paste, and take orally.
This treats abdominal abscess during pregnancy (Yun Yong) with immediate effect.
Linderae Radix (Wuyao) (ground; soft, white, fragrant varieties are superior)
Take 5 qian, add one cup of water and a piece of Ox Hide Glue (Niujiaojiao), decoct together until reduced to 0.7 parts, and take warm.
[Bu Yi] To treat abscess during pregnancy. Decoct Coicis Semen (Yiyiren) and drink the juice.
[Xue] Note: Yun Yong refers to an abdominal abscess. If the above methods are ineffective, use Mudanpi San or Yiyiren Tang. (Formulas see Surgical Internal Abscess section).
[Da] The Classics state: If food intake doubles, the intestines and stomach are injured. It also states: The generation of Yin essence originates from the Five Flavors. The five Yin organs (palaces of Yin) are damaged by the Five Flavors. If a pregnant woman does not regulate her diet, consuming raw, cold, or toxic substances, and indulges in eating, it injures the Spleen and Stomach. Therefore, treating food stagnation in pregnancy is difficult regarding medication choice; only these two formulas are most stable and effective. (Muxiang Wan, Baizhu San.)
[Xue] Mr. Dongyuan said: When the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach is robust, one does not feel hungry past normal times, and excessive eating does not cause injury. The Stomach governs reception, and the Spleen governs digestion; they are the root of the five Zang organs. However, injury from excessive food intake is due to Spleen Qi deficiency failing to transform. If strong agents are administered, the Spleen and Stomach will be further injured, and the Fetus will also be damaged. One must examine the cause and treat accordingly. If there is food stagnation or abdominal pain, use Pingwei San. For vomiting and nausea, add Fructus Aurantii (Zhike) and Amomi Fructus (Sharen). For acid regurgitation and belching with rotten smell, add Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian) 3 fen and Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) 2 fen. For abdominal fullness and diarrhea, use Liujunzi Tang. For meat stagnation, double the amount of Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha). For flour stagnation, double the amount of Hordeum Germ (Maiya). For glutinous rice stagnation, use only Baijiuqu Mo (Baijiu Qu powder). For rice stagnation, double the amount of Oryza Germ (Guya). For damage from fishy odors, double the amount of Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi). For damage from pungent and hot substances, add Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian). For damage from raw and cold substances, add Amomi Fructus (Sharen) and Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang); if ineffective, add Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou) and Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi); if still ineffective, use Sishen Wan. If Spleen Qi sinks, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang. Whenever one feels aversion to the smell of medicine and refuses medication, regulate diet and adapt to temperature changes. The Classics state: For Spleen injury, regulate diet and adapt to cold and heat. Generally, for Spleen and Stomach weakness and difficulty digesting food, equal parts of Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) ground into powder, formed into pills with aged Qu paste, taken regularly yields the best results. Zhizhu Wan should only be used temporarily; Zhi Shi is harsh and consumes True Qi; physicians must be cautious.
A pregnant woman suffered from food stagnation and took Zhizhu Wan, resulting in chest and abdominal discomfort and decreased appetite. She then took digestive and middle-journey widening agents, causing the fetus to descend. I reasoned this was due to Spleen Qi deficiency failing to support the fetus. I used Buzhong Yiqi Tang and Liujunzi Tang; as Middle Qi gradually strengthened, the fetus stabilized. Subsequently, Shenzhen Tang was used with Chai Hu and Sheng Ma for regulation, leading to recovery.
Muxiang Wan Treats food stagnation in pregnant women.
Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) (2 qian)
Sparganii Rhizoma (Sanleng)
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen)
Poria (Fuling) (each 3 qian)
Grind into fine powder, form pills the size of mung beans with wheat paste. Swallow 30-40 pills with cooked water.
Baizhu San Treats disharmony of Qi in pregnancy and susceptibility to food injury.
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) (stir-fried)
Perillae Folium (Gan Zisu) (each 1 liang)
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen)
Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) (stir-fried, each 7.5 qian)
Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong)
Terminalia Chebulae Fructus (Hezipi)
Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi) (each 0.5 liang)

Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add one cup of water and 3 slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Jiang), decoct to 0.7 parts, and take warm.
Xiao Qixiang Wan from *Ju Fang* (treats miscellaneous food injuries) and Baoqi San (used during confinement) are both highly effective for treating food stagnation.
Zhengshi Shengjin San Treats pregnant women whose fetus is injured by food, transmitting to the Spleen and Stomach, causing Qi deficiency and cold compression, resulting in lower abdominal distension and pain, heavy sensation in the waist, or constipation.
Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) (soaked in wine)
Prepared Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jing Chenpi)
Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong)
