[Da Lun] During pregnancy, if the body is deficient and wind pathogen invades, damaging the meridians and collaterals of the Taiyang (Greater Yang), and subsequently encounters a struggle between wind and cold pathogens, an attack manifests as lockjaw and stiffness of the back. This condition is named Jing (Spasm).
It is also stated: The symptoms include dizziness, oppression, and loss of consciousness. After a short while, the patient awakens spontaneously, but the condition recurs after a long interval. This is called Feng Jing (Wind Spasm). It is also known as Zi Xian (Pregnancy Epilepsy) or Zi Mao (Pregnancy Dizziness). In severe cases, it presents with opisthotonos (backward arching of the body like a bow).
[Xue Ji] If the aforementioned syndrome is caused by Wind-Heat in the Heart and Liver, use Gouteng Tang (Uncaria Decoction). [For fetal restlessness] If it is due to Blood Deficiency of the Liver and Spleen, use Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). [For irregular menstruation] If it is due to Stagnation and Anger of the Liver and Spleen, use Jia Wei Gui Pi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction). [For forgetfulness in miscellaneous diseases] If it is due to Qi Reversal and Phlegm Stagnation, use Zisu Yin (Perilla Infusion). If it is due to Liver Fire and Wind-Heat, use Gouteng San (Uncaria Powder). [For vertigo] If it is due to Spleen Stagnation and Phlegm Stagnation, use Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction), combined with Ginger Juice and Bamboo Sap. If mixed syndromes are present, one should refer to the section on Zi Fan (Pregnancy Irritability).
Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Decoction) treats pregnancy-related dizziness, oppression, and opisthotonos, named Zi Xian Feng Jing (Pregnancy Epilepsy Wind Spasm).
Ingredients: Lingyangjiao (Antelope Cornu, sliced), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried), Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), Yiyiren (Coicis Semen, stir-fried), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, soaked in wine), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria, woody core removed), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, skin and tips removed, each 5 fen), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, each 2 fen).
Usage: Decoct the above ingredients in water with fresh ginger and take orally.
"Duan Ju" records: Treat sudden fainting during pregnancy, inability to see with eyes, awakening after a moment followed by recurrence, or even failure to awaken. This disease is named Chi Bing (Spasm Disease), also Zi Xian (Pregnancy Epilepsy), or Zi Mao (Pregnancy Dizziness). Gegen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction) is suitable. If bamboo is nearby and can be obtained quickly, prepare Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) first, then prepare the decoction. If bamboo is far away and cannot be obtained immediately, prepare the decoction first. Mastering either of these two treatments is sufficient; Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) is particularly effective for treating various severe spasms and resuscitating the critically ill. It is not only effective for pregnant women who have fainted due to spasms, but also effective for infants suffering from epilepsy or convulsions, and for traumatic wounds complicated by tetanus.
Gegen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction) formula treats pregnancy near term, where wind pathogen induces spasm, causing dizziness, oppression, loss of consciousness, vomiting, dizziness, falling, slight recovery followed by recurrence, named Zi Xian (Pregnancy Epilepsy).
Ingredients: Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Beimu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus, heart removed), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Mugufangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria with Pini Wood), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, processed), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, each 2 liang), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, each 3 liang).
Usage: Finely cut the ingredients, add nine sheng of water, boil to obtain three sheng, and divide into three doses. Beimu facilitates easy delivery; if not yet at term, replace it with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma). Avoid consuming Haizao (Sargassum), Songcai (Brassica pekinensis), and vinegar products.
Note: This formula contains Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Mudanpi (Tree Peony Bark), which is less appropriate than Lingyangjiao San.
Qianghuo Jiu (Notopterygii Wine) treats pregnancy complicated by Wind-Stroke and Spasm, presenting with lockjaw, stiffness of the four limbs, and opisthotonos.
Ingredients: Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, rhizome removed, 1.5 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, rhizome removed, 1 liang), Heidou (Sojae Semen Nigrum, one ge, stir-fried, skin removed).
Usage: Pound the first two ingredients into coarse powder. Soak in five sheng of good wine overnight. For each dose, take one ge of stir-fried black beans until cooked, pour into a large cup of the medicinal wine, boil until bubbling, then stop heating. Filter out the dregs and administer in two divided doses.
[Danxi] Treated a woman who was six months pregnant and suffered from seizures. Her hands and feet extended and stiffened, her face turned purple-black, her eyes were closed with saliva flowing, and she was unconscious and unresponsive. She recovered consciousness after half an hour. The physician administered Zhenling Dan (Vibrant Spirit Pill) for over fifty doses, but the condition fluctuated without reduction, only resolving spontaneously upon labor. She delivered a daughter, and both mother and child were safe postpartum. The following year, her husband suspected arsenic toxicity and sought treatment. Her pulse was wiry on light pressure, choppy on heavy pressure, and deep, solid, and rapid when pressed to the bone. At that time, it was February/March, and since the true state of the seizure had not been observed, he dared not prescribe medication immediately. He reasoned that her previous seizure occurred in May and waited for that time, predicting the disease would recur, so he could treat it carefully. By mid-May, the disease indeed recurred, specifically during the Wu (11 AM-1 PM) and Si (9 AM-11 AM) hours. He instructed her to prepare Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Universal Relief Powder) herself, using a larger amount of raw Gancao (Licorice Root) and Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), and a smaller amount of Honghua (Carthami Flos). Whether taken orally or inducing vomiting, after four or five doses, the illness gradually subsided and became milder. Eventually, she developed scabies and was cured.
