The song in "Xing Zheng Lun" states: Dysentery with five colors has the most diverse causes; seeing this symptom indicates there are five types. Green color is solely due to fright causing qi stagnation and accumulation; yellow is mostly due to food stagnation in the spleen; white is caused by cold deficiency in the intestines and stomach; red is due to accumulated heat, which is hardest to stabilize; chicken liver color (purple-black) indicates hidden accumulation of blood stasis, often appearing in clumps; black involves the mixture of blood and toxins, also difficult to stabilize. If accompanied by lip twitching, chest distension, exposed teeth, facial redness, and protruding meridians, these are often precursors to worsening conditions. At this point, it is urgent to soothe the zang-fu organs and administer harmonizing decoctions; physicians should pay attention and follow the ancients' wisdom.
Another song states: Do not consider dysentery with five colors strange; it begins to appear in children before the age of four. Green is still due to fright causing qi stagnation and accumulation; yellow is due to food stagnation toxins in the spleen; red and black indicate heart and kidney diseases respectively; white is mostly due to spleen damage. Before the age of twenty-one (three sevens), the body undergoes no major changes; do not allow excessive sleep, and ensure feeding and drinking are slow and moderate. Treating this disease requires first harmonizing the five zang organs and tonifying Ying and Wei Qi, so that the condition will gradually heal. If accompanied by swollen eyes and inability to eat (Yang considered this a bad omen), simply administer Tiao Wei San for supplementation.
