For the treatment of Shanghan (Cold Damage) and for treating carbuncles to promote lactation, all involve attacking heat. Therefore, these methods can be used if there is no interior cold syndrome. If there is interior cold, it manifests as high fever without thirst, loose stools instead of constipation, urine that is not red or dark, a bluish-white complexion, and white sclera without yellowing or reddening; these are all signs of interior cold. Although Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) is included to warm the middle, it is ultimately used for deficiency-heat patterns. When the viscera are cold, cold-natured drugs take effect first, while hot-natured drugs may not control it; when the viscera are hot, hot-natured drugs take effect first, while cold-natured drugs may not control it. This is the natural course of events. How can one prescribe medication without distinguishing between exterior/interior and cold/heat? In the *Heji Fang* (Formulas of the Bureau of Taiping Renmin Hospital), for pediatric Shanghan with high fever, one should first administer Xingxing San (Awakening Powder), which is highly effective. Subsequently, Qianghuo San (Notopterygium Powder) should be given. If the high fever does not subside, one must absolutely avoid using purgatives or cooling drugs, lest it be a case of Chuangzhen (rash/pox), in which case medication would be erroneous.
Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Xixin (Asarum, leaves removed), Renshen (Ginseng), Gancao (Licorice Root, stir-fried), Baifuling (Poria, peel removed), Gualougen (Trichosanthes Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) (each 1.5 liang).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, with 1 zhan of water, add 2 leaves of Bohe (Mint), decoct together until 0.3 zhan remains, filter dregs, and take warm. To harmonize qi, add Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) for decoction; time is not restricted. Do not use if there is high fever but spontaneous loose stools.
Haizang stated: Xingxing San treats wind-heat, throat obstruction, spleen disharmony, Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) thirst, and difficult urination.
Jingjie San (Schizonepeta Powder) treats measles and smallpox accompanied by itching, or urticaria, with normal bowel movements.
Take a small amount of Jingjie (Schizonepeta), crush it thoroughly, filter through cloth with fresh well water, add a drop of Sesame Oil, mix well, and let the child drink. This prevents mental confusion. After measles and smallpox have erupted, boil Huangla (Yellow Beeswax) with Qingjiaoshui (Ox Glue) for the child to drink, which brings peace. Jingjie treats blood-wind; measles are rashes. Commonly referred to as wind-rash or urticaria, they appear on the skin, indicating light and floating toxicity. Using Sesame Oil to mix facilitates the opening of orifices. Taking boiled ox glue nourishes blood and promotes the circulation of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi). Once Ying and Wei are smooth, measles erupt. The Jingjie Tang (Schizonepeta Decoction) in *Zhimi Fang* (Confusing the Mystic Formulas) is Xiaodu Yin (Detoxification Decoction) plus Bohe (Mint).
Qianghuo San (Notopterygium Powder) clears heat and disperses toxicity, treating wind congestion and impending eruption of sores/rashes.
Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Duohuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Chantui (Cicada Slough), Qianhu (Peucedanum Root), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Digupi (Dogwood Bark), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Gualou (Trichosanthes Fruit), Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome, honey-fried), Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) (equal parts).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, with 0.3 zhan of water and 3 leaves of Bohe (Mint), decoct in a cup until 0.2 zhan remains, take orally at once, adjusting water volume according to age. Analyzing the ingredients, this formula treats wind, cold, fright, phlegm, cools the spleen, treats blood-heat, and penetrates the muscle layer. It is effective for any condition caused by excess heat. However, do not use lightly for those with weak constitution, weak spleen/stomach, or external heat with blueish-white sclera, as these indicate absence of internal heat.
Bohe San (Mint Powder) is suitable for children who just perceive the onset of rash/pox.
Boheye (Mint Leaf) (1 liang), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, nodes removed), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) (each 0.5 liang).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, with 1 zhong of water, 2 jujubes, and 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), decoct until 0.6 zhong remains, filter dregs, cool to warm, and take two to three times daily. This is for children with excessive endowment and severe toxic factors. The principle is that taking it immediately upon perception of rash/pox is beneficial. If sweating occurs after administration, take Tiao Zhong San (Regulate Middle Powder). If chills and fever occur with a slow pulse after taking Bohe San, administer Tuochi San (Tooth-Falling Powder) to warm. Theoretically, this is not a purgative method; it may not bring peace to excess patterns and will endanger deficiency patterns.
Shensu Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Decoction) (see Ji Jing section), Renshen Qianghuo San (Ginseng and Notopterygium Powder) (see Ji Jing section).
Qianghuo San (Notopterygium Powder) This formula is temporarily used in the initial heat stage and also treats convulsions.
Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) (1.2 qian), Duohuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta) (each 0.8 qian), Qianhu (Peucedanum Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) (each 1 qian), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Chantui (Cicada Slough), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 0.4 qian), Xixin (Asarum) (0.1 qian).
Add 3 leaves of Bohe (Mint), 1 zhong of water, decoct to 0.5 zhong, take anytime. Temporarily use for convulsions and persistent high heat. After decoction, mix with processed Zhashi (Calcined Oyster Shell) to treat convulsions miraculously.
Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Detoxification Powder) treats Wind-Cold, plague, wind-dampness, dizziness, limb pain, aversion to cold with high fever, stiff neck, and eye pain.
It also treats common wind-induced dizziness and fatigue, body and neck pain from wind-phlegm, cough, nasal congestion, heavy voice with chills and fever.
Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Qianhu (Peucedanum Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Duohuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Fuling (Poria), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Renshen (Ginseng) (each 1 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root) (0.5 liang).
Grind into coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Bohe (Mint).
Li's Baidu San (Li's Detoxification Powder) treats initial high heat and similar syndromes.
This is the previous Baidu San plus Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Niubangzi (Arctium Fruit), Chantui (Cicada Slough), Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit), Digupi (Dogwood Bark), Bohe (Mint), Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Zicao (Arnebia Root).
Remove Duohuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Fuling (Poria), Renshen (Ginseng).
If heat is severe, add Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root). In summer, add Xiangru (Elsholtzia Herb). In winter, add Mahuang (Ephedra Stem). For diarrhea, add Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome).
Decoct with 1 slice of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Before taking, add 5 teaspoons of Congbai juice (Green Onion White Juice).
Zhengqi San (Righteous Qi Powder)
Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) (3.5 fen), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb, stems removed), Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) (each 5 fen), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, ginger-processed), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, ginger-processed) (each 1.5 qian).
Cut finely, make one dose. Add 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and 1 jujube, decoct with water and take.
Jiedie San (Harmonizing Powder)
Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit, bran-fried), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, remove radicle, fry), Renshen (Ginseng), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, processed seven times), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Mutong (Akebia Stem), Gegen (Kudzu Root) (each 4 fen), Gancao (Licorice Root), Zisu (Perilla Leaf) (each 2 fen).
Cut finely, make one dose. Add 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and 1 jujube, decoct with water and take. Another prescription adds Zicao (Arnebia Root) and Nuomi (Glutinous Rice).
Sujie San (Perilla Harmonizing Powder) treats early high heat of smallpox, headache, lower back pain, abdominal pain and distension, and all cases of severe heat toxicity.
Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Gegen (Kudzu Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Chantui (Cicada Slough), Zicao (Arnebia Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Niubangzi (Arctium Fruit), Mutong (Akebia Stem), Gancao (Licorice Root) (equal parts).
Add 7 stems of Dengxin (Juncus Effusus Pith) and Congbai (Green Onion White), decoct with water, take hot.
Jiehe Tang (Harmonizing Decoction) releases the exterior and harmonizes the middle.
Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Gegen (Kudzu Root) (each 1.5 qian), Baishao (White Peony Root) (1 qian), Renshen (Ginseng), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) (each 0.7 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) (0.8 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root) (0.5 qian).
Decoct with 1 slice of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and water, take.
The above seventeen formulas are moderate exterior-releasing agents.
Wang Chaofeng's Siwu Ji Ji Tang (Four Substances Muscle-Releasing Decoction)
Shaoyao (Peony Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Gegen (Kudzu Root).
Take 4 qian per dose, with 1 zhan of water, decoct to 0.7 zhan, filter dregs and take. Some say that for pediatric Shanghan, epidemic fevers, tidal heat, and rash/pox where differentiation is difficult after five days, all should be regulated with acrid-cool agents, such as Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) for muscle-releasing. Haizang said: This discussion implies an exterior syndrome. If there is internal injury with abdominal mass and fever without stool, food-resolving drugs should be used to remove the mass. If fever persists in the exterior after defecation, this Ji Ji Tang is appropriate. Compared to Qian's Shengma Gegen Tang (Cimicifuga and Kudzu Decoction), it reduces Gancao (Licorice Root) and adds Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) to address exterior heat.
Fangfeng Cangzhu Tang (Saposhnikovia and Atractylodes Decoction) treats pediatric pathogenic heat in the exterior, aversion to wind and cold, un-erupted rash/pox, releasing the exterior and promoting eruption.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) (each 0.5 liang), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 1 liang), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (each 2 liang).
Grind into coarse powder. Take 2 qian per dose, with 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and 7 leaves of Bohe (Mint), decoct with water, take twice daily.
Shuangjie San (Double Harmonizing Powder) combines Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia and Magnolia Decoction) and Yi Yuan San (Benefit Primordial Powder).
Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Baishaoyao (White Peony Root), Boheye (Mint Leaf), Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit) (each 5 fen), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (each 8 fen), Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Jingjiesui (Schizonepeta Spike) (each 2 fen), Huashi (Talcum) (2.4 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root) (1 qian).
Cut finely. Add 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), 2 zhan of water, decoct to 1 zhan, filter dregs, take warm, anytime.

Daimao Tang (Hawkbill Turtle Decoction) treats seasonal pea-sores and red rashes. For un-erupted cases, it resolves internally; for erupted cases, it clears toxic factors without allowing them to become excessive.
Sheng Daimao (Raw Hawkbill Turtle Shell), Sheng Xi (Raw Rhinoceros Horn) (each grind thickly in cold water to obtain 2 he of juice).
Mix well. Take 0.5 he per dose, warm, 4-5 times daily is best.
Also suitable for eruptions that are not smooth. Furthermore, for toxic factors attacking inward with dark purple/black color and slow eruption, use 1 he of thick Daimao water-grind juice, add 1 soap-sized piece of Zhu Xin Xue (Pig Heart Blood), and mix with thick Zicao (Arnebia Root) decoction as one dose. Daimao and Xijiao are slightly cold in nature, suitable for heat toxicity. Both treat plagues, miasma, resolve hundred toxins, unblock vessels, and reduce carbuncles. Thus, they are used to resolve accumulated toxicity.

Qian's formulas also attach this prescription to treat excessive rashes preventing eye involvement, named Tiao Gan San (Regulate Liver Powder). This formula treats excess wind and qi, heart/liver blood-heat, internal dryness of fluids, constipation, upward flourishing of toxic factors, and unresolved exterior heat. Dahuang and Gualou treat internal dryness; Gouteng and Longdancao treat wind-blood heat; Sangbaipi and Shigao treat upper jiao heat; Mahuang and Huang Qin dissipate muscle heat; Xijiao and Gancao detoxify. Generally, medication must match the disease; then the disease goes and healthy qi recovers. Otherwise, it causes great harm. For instance, Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) should only be taken if there is multi-day constipation, panting, confusion, restlessness, and delirium. Otherwise, the medicine and disease do not match.
Duoming San (Life-Snatching Powder) is suitable for both erupted and un-erupted rashes.

Grind into coarse powder. Take 1 large qian per dose, with 0.6 zhan of water and 2-7 cun of Zicao (Arnebia Root), decoct to 0.4 zhan. Take three consecutive doses, and smallpox will erupt. Niubangzi helps expel pus and penetrate muscles; Baijiangcan treats widespread urticaria and painful sores. Taken as powder with wine, recovery is immediate. Alternatively, decoct with Zicao (Arnebia Root) to open orifices. Since rash/pox syndromes have no deficiency-cold patterns, taking this causes immediate eruption.
Jiedu Shudou Tang (Detoxification and Smallpox-Relieving Decoction) taken preventively to clear heat and remove toxicity. For erupted cases, clears heat-toxicity and rashes, also treats red-purple dry mouth, high fever, and delirium.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Shuniuzi (Arctium Fruit), Zicao (Arnebia Root), Chantui (Cicada Slough).
