Chao Yuanfang stated: The Heart opens into the tongue and governs blood, while the collateral vessels of the Spleen also emerge from under the tongue. The Heart and Spleen are in a mother-son relationship. If heat pathogens are present, both blood and qi will become hyperactive. The manifestation is swelling attached to the sublingual area near the root of the tongue, shaped like a tongue but shorter, known as *Chong She* (Double Tongue). Methods for cutting with fingernails or using a reed knife are described in the preceding section on "Mouth Wiping Method." The *Hui Yan Jing* states that *E Kou* (Goose Mouth Thrush), *Chong She* (Double Tongue), *Chong Yin* (Double Gums), and mouth ulcers are all caused by heat in the Upper Jiao, resulting from excessive heat exposure during fetal development. One should immediately sprinkle dry powder of *Ji Nei Jin* (Chicken Gizzard Membrane) into the mouth, and alternatively apply *Zhusha Gao* (Cinnabar Ointment) and *Dihuang Gao* (Rehmannia Ointment), while also administering *Tianzhu Huang San* (Bambusa Textilis Decoction Powder).
*Dihuang Gao* (Rehmannia Ointment)
Ingredients: *Yujin* (Curcuma Radix, boiled in soap pod water until dry, sliced, and dried), *Dou Fen* (Bean Starch) (each 0.5 liang), *Gancao* (Licorice Root, roasted) (1 fen), *Mayaxiao* (Natrii Sulfas) (ground, 1 qian).
Preparation: Mix fresh *Sheng Dihuang Zhi* (Juice of Rehmanniae Radix) and honey, boil down to form an ointment, then mix with the medicinal powders. Take an amount the size of a soap pod each time, dissolve it in warm fragrant water, or sweep it into the oral cavity with a goose feather.
*Jinzhu Yin* (Gold-Cinnabar Drink)
Indications: Treats fright-induced high fever, latent heat from *Shanghan* (Cold Damage), deficiency heat in the Upper Jiao, and red eyes caused by *Chong She* (Double Tongue) and ulcers in the mouth and nose. (Originally named *Tianzhu Huang San*).
Ingredients: *Chuan Yujin* (Curcumae Radix, crushed, boiled in soap pod water until dry; small ones resembling gallbladders are best), *Tianzhu Huang* (Bambusa Textilis Decoction), *Gancao* (Licorice Root, roasted), *Mayaxiao* (Natrii Sulfas) (each 0.5 liang), *Zhusha* (Cinnabar, ground) (1 fen), *Chan Qiao* (Periostracum Cicadae) (14 pieces, washed to remove soil), *Shexiang* (Moschus) (a small amount).
Preparation: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take 0.5 to 1 qian each time, mixed with honey water.
The treatment methods in *Qianjin Fang* are summarized in the preceding chapter on "Ptotic Abscesses." After acupuncture to drain blood, wash and wipe with salt water, then apply *Yizi San* (One-Character Powder); the method is the same as the preceding section.
Mr. Mao stated: For stagnation of Heart heat, first apply *Zhusha Gao* (Cinnabar Ointment) [see Fright Accumulation Chapter] to the tongue, then apply *Niuhuang Gao* (Calculus Bovis Ointment) [see Diaphragm Heat Chapter].
*Shenghui Fang* Niuhuang San (Calculus Bovis Powder)
(One variation lacks the first three ingredients and contains *Xuanming Fen* instead.)
Ingredients: *Niuhuang* (Calculus Bovis), *Bai Long Nao* (Borneolum Syntheticum), *Zhusha* (Cinnabar) (each 1 fen), *Qianshuang* (Plumbum Subacetatum) (0.5 liang), *Taiyin Xuanjing Shi* (Selenite) (1 liang).
Preparation: Grind the above ingredients finely into a powder. First, puncture the swollen area with a needle or lancet to release blood, wash and wipe the oral cavity with salt water, then sprinkle the powder. This yields miraculous results.
