In the spring and summer months, among trees and along wall ditches, there are certain multi-colored hairy caterpillars that are extremely toxic. Anyone who touches them will have their venomous hairs injected into the skin of their hands and feet, penetrating from the epidermis to the muscle, and from the muscle to the bone. Initially, the skin and flesh itch slightly, gradually progressing to pain. After several days, the itching remains on the exterior while the pain is felt internally. Scratching with hands, whether for itching or pain, inevitably leads to the rotting of flesh and bone, posing a threat to life. This condition is named "Zhong She Gong Du" (Poisoning by insect projectile hairs). Various medicines are ineffective. Take approximately one bowl of good fermented soybeans (Douchi), half a cup of clear cooking oil, mix and pound the beans until mushy, and apply thickly to the painful and itchy area. After about an hour, the aroma of the beans penetrates the bone, drawing out the insect hairs, which become visible in large numbers. Remove the beans and bury them in the soil. Wash the affected area with a decoction of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi). If the flesh has already rotted, use Sepiae Endoconcha (Haipiaoxiao, cuttlefish bone) ground into powder and applied to the wound for healing. Another method: take the white juice from the rhizomes and roots of Taraxaci Herba (Pugongying, dandelion) and apply it to the site for immediate recovery. Yet another prescription: use yellow earth from the bottom of a cooking pot ground into powder, knead it into balls with sour vinegar, and rub it over the itchy and painful area; all hairs will adhere to the earth, and the pain and itching will stop immediately with miraculous effect. (Yellow earth is also known as Longgu Fossilized Heartwood / Fulonggan.) Note: For treating injuries from Mautus larvae (Cimicidae/Caterpillars), nothing is more effective than Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, licorice root); chew it finely in the mouth and apply it to the wound for instant cure. Currently, residents at the foot of Tiger Hill in Suzhou make a living planting trees, and within a radius of ten li, there are no such insects, because they frequently sprinkle tree branches with licorice juice.
For treating bites from Qu Chui [specific insect name], use fine powder of aged tea leaves mixed and applied topically.
[Duan] To treat leech bites presenting like Feng Zheng (Wind Syndrome) with loss of eyebrows and beard, and the sensation of leeches chirping on the body at night with suppuration, soak in salt water several times to find relief. (From *Chuanxin Fang*)
[Yan] In the past, a patient suffered from abdominal distension and heard leeches chirping on his body at night. Someone advised him to soak in salt water, which cured him.
To treat mole cricket bites, burn Qu Ye (Oak leaves) to ash, grind finely; rinse the wound with water used for soaking oak leaves, dry it, and insert a small amount of ash into the wound. Another method for treating mole cricket bites: use Duan Shi (Calcined Mineral Alkali) mixed with vinegar and applied topically.
Use Moschus (Shexiang, musk), ground and mixed with honey for topical application. Another method: use Boehmeriae Caulis (Zhu Gen, ramie root), crush to extract juice for oral consumption and topical application. (If ramie is placed near silkworm eggs, the silkworms will not hatch.)
