Zhang Zhongjing's Dahuang Zhechong Wan: For those with blood stasis accumulation internally, the pulses in the hands and feet will inevitably be discordant; this formula is suitable, but it must be taken concurrently with a major tonic such as Qiongyu Gao.
Dahuang (10 fen; anciently, 2.5 qian was one fen, so this should be 2.5 liang, steamed) Huangqin (2 liang) Gancao (3 liang) Taoren (1 sheng) Xingren (1 sheng) Dihuang (10 liang) Shaoyao (4 liang) Ganqi (1 liang) Mengchong (1 sheng) Shuizhi (100 pieces) Qicao (1 sheng) Zhechong (0.5 sheng)
The above twelve ingredients are ground into powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of adzuki beans. Take five pills with wine. Three times daily.
Dr. Chen’s transmission of Zhang Zhongjing’s Bailao Wan (see Blood Accumulation).
Sijunzi Tang: Treats deficiency of true qi, as well as shortness of breath and weak pulse.
Baizhu Renshen Huangqi Fuling (equal parts)
The above are made into coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose, with one cup of water, decocted to 0.7 cups. Take warm after meals. (Another prescription has no Huangqi, but has Gancao halved. Adding Chenpi makes it Yigong San. Adding Chenpi and Banxia makes it Liujunzi Tang.)
Siwu Tang: Nourishes Ying and Wei, tonifies Qi and Blood.
Shudihuang (Tonifies Blood. If there is pain below the umbilicus, only this herb can remove it; it is a herb that enters the Kidney channel.) Chuanxiong (Treats wind, drains Liver wood. If there is headache due to Blood deficiency, only this herb can remove it; it is a herb that enters the Liver channel.) Shaoyao (Harmonizes Blood and regulates Spleen. If there is deficiency pain in the abdomen, only this herb can remove it; it is a herb that enters the Spleen channel.) Danggui (If there is stabbing pain due to Blood deficiency, only this herb can remove it; it is a herb that enters the Kidney channel.)
The above are made into coarse powder and decocted in water. In spring, use Fangfeng Siwu Tang, adding Fangfeng and doubling Chuanxiong. In summer, use Huangqin Siwu Tang, adding Huangqin and doubling Shaoyao. In autumn, use Mendong Siwu Tang, adding Tianmendong and doubling Dihuang. In winter, use Guizhi Siwu Tang, adding Guizhi and doubling Danggui. If there is Blood deficiency with abdominal pain, slight sweating, and aversion to wind, use Siwu Tang plus Baizhu and Guizhi, called Abdominal Pain Liuhe Tang. If there is wind-induced vertigo, add Qinjiao and Qianghuo, adjusted as Wind Liuhe Tang. If there is fever with irritability and inability to sleep, add Huanglian and Zhizi, called Heat Liuhe Tang. If dampness invades causing heaviness and weakness, cool body, and slight sweating, add Baizhu and Fuling, called Dampness Liuhe Tang. If Qi is deficient, causing weakness upon rising and dizziness/fainting, add Houpo and Chenpi, called Qi Liuhe Tang. If there is deficiency-cold with faint pulse and spontaneous sweating, though breathing is normal, with clear urine and stool, add Ganjiang and Fuzi, called Cold Liuhe Tang. If there is body heat with rapid pulse, dizziness, and stiff neck, add Chaihu and Huangqin. If wind arises from heat, add Chuanxiong, Chaihu, and Fangfeng. If eyes suddenly become red and swollen, forming cloud-like opacities with unbearable pain, use Siwu Longdan Tang. (Formula see Eye Section.) If there is malaria, add Jingjie, decocted in wine for regular use. If there is deficiency-irritability and insomnia, add Zhuye and Renshen. If there is deficiency-heat, combine Siwu Tang with Shen Su Yin, named Buxin Tang. If there is severe irritability and thirst, add Zhimu and Shigao. If Yin deficiency causes heat clashing with Blood, with dry mouth/throat and desire to drink, add Gualou and Maidong. If various pains are accompanied by dampness, use half Siwu Tang and half Baizhu, adding Tianma, Fuling, and Chuanshanjia, decocted in wine. If limbs are swollen and painful with immobility, use Siwu Cangzhu Half-and-Half Tang. If there is vomiting, add Baizhu, Renshen, and Shengjiang. If fluid retention in the heart region with mild nausea/vomiting, add Zhuling, Fuling, and Fangji. To treat dryness and constipation, combine half Siwu Tang and half Tiaowei Chengqi Tang, named Yuzhu San. If there is organ closure with stagnation, add Dahuang and Taoren. For elderly patients with wind-type constipation, add Qingpi in equal parts. For draining dampness and drying dryness, use Sili Wuli Zhong Half-and-Half Tang. For slippery diarrhea, add Guigui and Fuzi. For bloody dysentery, add Ejiao and Aiyi. For abdominal distension, add Houpo and Zhishi. For consumptive disease with weak Qi, cough, and wheezing/fullness, use Houpo Liuhe Tang. Siwu Tang 4 liang, Houpo processed with ginger 1 liang, Zhishi bran-fried 0.5 liang. If Blood and Qi rush upward causing fullness in the heart, abdomen, and hypochondrium, use Zhiqi Liuhe Tang. Siwu Tang 4 liang, add Muxiang and Binglang each 1 liang. If there is alternating chills and fever, add charred Ganjiang, Mudanpi, Baishaoyao, and Chaihu. If there is deficiency-strong fever resembling Taiyang disease, add Renshen and Chaihu. Siwu Tang can be combined half-and-half with Guizhi Tang, Mahuang Tang, Baihu Tang, Chaihu Tang, Lizhong Tang, Sini Tang, Zhuyu Tang, Chengqi Tang, and Liangge San; this is the general principle of用药 by Li Dongyuan (Yi Lao). There are twenty-six modifications of Siwu Tang for treating miscellaneous gynecological diseases, see Gynecology Section. There are fifteen modifications of Siwu Tang for treating pregnancy complicated by Taiyang disease, named Liuhe Tang, see Taiyang Section. Cangzhu (1 jin, soaked in oil) Shudihuang (1 jin) Wuweizi (0.5 jin) Ganjiang (1 liang in autumn/winter, 0.5 liang in summer, 7 qian in spring)
Grind into fine powder, form pills with jujube flesh the size of paulownia seeds. Take 100 pills before meals with rice drink or wine. Excellent for treating chronic hemorrhoids due to Blood deficiency.
The Classic says: The Kidney dislikes dryness; quickly eat pungent substances to moisten it. This herb opens the interstices, generates fluids, and moves Qi; Wuweizi is sour to astringe it. Although Yang is abundant, it is not dry-hot; rather, it addresses internal deficiency damage of the Five Viscera, thus benefiting Blood and gathering Qi. This is a divine-class formula based on correspondence.

Examining Yang Shi’s original formula: Shanyao and Niuxi each 1.5 liang; Fuling, Zhuyu, Chushizi, Duzhong, Wuweizi, Bajitian, Rousongcong, Yuanzhi, Huixiang each 1 liang; Changpu, Dihuang, Gouqi each 0.5 liang.)
Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey and jujube flesh to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose with warm wine or salt water, three times daily, before meals.
After five days, strength returns; after ten days, spirit refreshes; after half a month, Qi strengthens; after twenty days, eyes brighten; after one month, desire for food at night; in winter, hands and feet are always warm. Long-term use makes the body light and healthy, sinews and bones strong, complexion lustrous and age-defying. Adjust based on constitution: if heat, add Zhizi 1 liang; if Heart Qi is unsettled, add Maidong 1 liang; if lacking spirit, add Wuweizi 1 liang; if Yang is weak, add Xuduan 1 liang.
