Buhui Wood (Buhui Mu)
Nature: Greatly Cold. Indications: Mainly treats heat-related prickly heat sores (Re Fei Chuang). Preparation: Mixed with jujube leaves and calcined stone powder, applied externally to the body. Origin: Produced in Shangdang. Description: Resembles rotten wood; does not burn when fired; belongs to the category of stones. (Added later)
*Tu Jing Ben Cao* states: Buhui Wood is produced in Shangdang; currently found in the mountains of Ze and Lu prefectures. It generally belongs to the stone category. Its color is greenish-white like rotten wood, and it does not burn when fired, hence its name. Some say it is the root of Talcum (Huashi); it is found wherever Talcum is found, also called Wuhui Wood. There is no specific time for harvesting. Currently, a type of "Pine Stone" (Songshi) is produced in the mountains of Chuzhou. It resembles pine trunks but is solid stone; some claim old pines transform into stone over time. People often use it to decorate mountain pavilions and carve them into pillows. Although not used in medicine, it is similar to Buhui Wood, so it is appended here.
Chen Cangqi says: To process it, chop it open, boil in cow's milk, then fire it again, using yellow cow dung as fuel to turn it into ash. In the second year of Zhonghe era, this method was seen circulating at Li Zong's place. *Dan Fang Jing Yuan* records: Buhui Wood is used to process mercury.
Pengsha (Peng Sha)
Flavor: Bitter, Pungent. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Actions: Resolves phlegm, stops coughing, breaks up masses/knots, treats throat obstruction (Hou Bi). Usage: Also used for soldering gold and silver. Alternative Name: Borax (Pengsha). (Newly supplemented, see *Ri Hua Zi Ben Cao*)
*TU Jing Ben Cao* content is detailed under the entry for "Sha" (Sand/Mineral).
*Yan Yi* states: Pengsha, when held in the mouth to dissolve and swallow the saliva, treats swelling and pain in the throat, and phlegm-heat above the diaphragm. If treated early upon initial sensation, it will not develop into Hou Bi, or can achieve effect gradually. Those from Nanfan (Southern foreign regions) are dark brown in color, have a mild flavor, and act quickly. Those from Xirong (Western barbarian regions) are white in color, have a scorched/bitter taste, act slowly, and are unsuitable for soldering.
Qianshuang (Qian Shuang)
Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Actions: Resolves phlegm, stops palpitations/fright, resolves alcohol toxicity, treats chest/diaphragm oppression/stuffiness, wind-stroke with phlegm-solidity, stops thirst. (Newly supplemented, see *Ri Hua Zi Ben Cao*)
*TU Jing Ben Cao* content is detailed under the entry for "Qian" (Lead).
*Jian Yao Ji Zhong Fang*: Treats virgins with scanty, obstructed menstruation, mental restlessness, and confusion. Grind Qian Bai Shuang (Lead Frost) finely into a powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with one he of warm Rehmannia juice.
Mixing with decoction of dried fresh Rehmannia is also acceptable. *Shi Quan Bo Jiu Fang*: Prescription for epistaxis (nosebleed): Grind Qian Bai Shuang into powder, mix with a yi measure of fresh well water.
*Yan Yi* states: Regarding Qianshuang, *Tu Jing* has already recorded its preparation method. It treats upper diaphragm heat-phlegm obstruction. Applying it to papaya removes its sour taste; this is due to Metal overcoming Wood.
