[Iron Hua Fen (Iron Flower Powder)]
Taste: salty. Nature: neutral. Toxicity: non-toxic. Main actions: Calms the mind and spirit (An Xin Shen), strengthens bone marrow, enhances willpower and physical strength, dispels wind pathogenic factors, nourishes blood and qi, prolongs life, turns hair white, and eliminates hundred diseases. According to the patient's constitutional cold or heat, it is combined with other herbs and made into pills using jujube paste as a binder.
Method for preparing Iron Hua Fen: Take steel and make it into thin leaves, shaped like a tablet of office or round discs. Polish the flat surfaces until smooth and clean. Sprinkle with salt water, and bury in an earthenware jar of vinegar in a shady place for one hundred days. Iron flowers (rust) will grow on the surface of the iron, which completes the preparation. Scrape it off, pound finely, sieve, and grind in a mortar until fine as flour. Mix with other medicines to form pills or powders. This is the essence of iron, and its efficacy is stronger than that of Iron Powder (Tie Fen). (Currently attached)
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note: Ri Hua Zi states: Tie Yin Fen (Iron Seed Powder) stops palpitations and fright, treats deficiency-type epilepsy, stabilizes the five zang organs, expels evil qi, strengthens willpower, fortifies sinews and bones, treats forgetfulness (Jian Wang), cold qi, heart pain, fixed masses (Pi Zheng Jie), rectal prolapse, hemorrhoids, retained food, etc., and can be applied externally for bamboo or wood splinters. Its preparation method is the same as Hua Fen, except it is suspended over a sauce jar, near moist ground, and when scraping the frost, it is ground, washed to remove coarse red juice and salty taste, then dried.
The *Tu Jing Ben Cao* records details under the entry for Iron Strip.
Empirical Later Formula: Treats heart deficiency with wind pathogen, mental confusion, and forgetfulness. Take four jin of used plowshare iron, burn it in charcoal fire until red hot, quench in vinegar. Repeat this seven times. Then crush into pieces the size of chess coins. Soak in two dou of water for fourteen days. Take one small cup after each meal.
[Raw Iron]
Nature: slightly cold. Main indications: Disorders of the lower part of the body and rectal prolapse.
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note: Ri Hua Zi states: After Raw Iron Rust is prepared by sublimation (Fei), wash away the coarse red juice, dry, and use. Treats epilepsy, calms the heart, soothes the five zang organs, and darkens temple hair. Treats tinea and malignant sores/scrabies, spider bites; applying garlic rub or raw oil externally is effective. Currently, according to sources: Explanation is found under the entry for Iron Essence (Tie Jing).

Boil raw iron until it has flavor, and use to wash the wound. Another formula: If beaten and blood stasis remains in joints and external hypochondrium without dispersing, take one jin of iron and three sheng of wine, boil to obtain one sheng, and drink. *Ji Yan Fang*: Treats rectal prolapse unhealed for years. Take three jin of raw iron and one dou of water, boil to obtain five sheng. Remove the iron, and wash with the decoction twice daily. *Zi Mu Mi Lu*: Treats a type of sore in children called "Rotting Sore". Quench heated iron in water twenty-one times, and bathe the infant two or three times with this water to resolve the sore exudate.
