Qingyu (Black Carp)
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Neutral. Toxicity: Non-toxic.
Meat: Mainly treats Hongxiangjiao (a condition characterized by swelling and numbness in the feet, similar to beriberi) and damp-bi syndrome. It is contraindicated for those taking mineral drugs (Shiyao), as it produces adverse reactions.
Eyes: Mainly improves night vision.
Occipital bone of the head: Steamed and dried, it can substitute for Amber (Hupo). Used externally for massage or internally, it mainly treats heart and abdominal pain.
Gallbladder: Mainly treats dim vision. The juice is dripped into the eyes and applied to malignant sores. It lives in rivers and lakes. (Added later)
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note according to Xiao Bing: Treats sudden Qi rebellion. Taken as powder, it stops abdominal pain. It can be boiled plain and eaten to treat Hongxiangjiao with weak legs. Rihua Zi says: Written as "Qing" character, nature neutral, slightly toxic. Treats leg weakness, irritability, and boosts Qi strength. When used as a pillow rubbed with vinegar, it treats water retention and blood-Qi heart pain. Do not eat together with Malva vegetables (Kui) or garlic. Those taking Atractylodes macrocephala (Baizhu) should also avoid eating it.
"Tujing" states: Qingyu lives in rivers and lakes; now it is also produced in the South, and occasionally found in the North. It resembles carp and grass carp but has a true green back. Southerners often make it into Qingsauce (preserved fish paste), anciently written as the "Qing" character, known as the "Five Marquis's Qingsauce." The occipital bone, steamed until permeated with steam and sun-dried, resembles amber, said to substitute for amber, but this is incorrect.
In Jingchu, the occipital bones of this fish are boiled and beaten to make vessels, which is excellent. Gallbladders and eyeballs are both used medicinally. They can be collected at any time. Ancient and modern formula books often use the gallbladder juice dripped into the eyes to treat dim vision. It can also be applied to malignant sores. Other uses are rare.
"Shiliao" states: Mainly treats Hongxiangjiao with irritability. Also, boiled with white parts of leeks, it treats Hongxiangjiao with weak legs and irritability, benefiting heart power. Additionally, the occipital bone benefits the eyes; extracting juice and dripping it into the eyes treats dim vision. Applying it to hot sores is also effective. "Haiyao" states: In the South, people use Qingyu to make wine vessels and combs. Sun Simiao states: For treating throat closure and fishbone impaction, take Qingyu gallbladder in the twelfth lunar month and dry it in the shade. If suffering from these conditions or having a fishbone stuck, use a small amount of gallbladder...
Hetun (Pufferfish)
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Mainly tonifies deficiency, dispels dampness, regulates waist and legs, removes hemorrhoids, and kills parasites. Found in rivers, lakes, and Huai River waters.
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note according to Rihua Zi: Hetun is toxic. Also called Huyi fish, nature cool, toxic. Boiled with Tucai (a type of vegetable), it is good. Poison can be resolved using Reeds (Lugen) and olives, etc. The liver is highly toxic. Also known as KT fish, Gui fish, or Blowfish.
Chen Cangqi states: Resembles catfish, pointed mouth, also named Ci fish.
"Yanyi" states: Regarding Hetun, the "Classic" states it is non-toxic, but this fish actually has high toxicity. Although its taste is exquisite, improper preparation can lead to death upon consumption; one must be cautious. It is better not to eat fat, live fish. Su Zimei said: At this time, Hetun is more expensive than fish and shrimp. This is merely satirical language by poets and should not be fully trusted. However, this fish is prone to anger; when touched, its belly fills with rage, and it floats upside down on the water. Fishermen then poke it with objects, leading to its capture. Olives and Reed juice resolve its toxicity.
