Zhongfeng (Wind Stroke) refers to the condition caused by Wind pathogen invading the human body. Wind is the Qi of the four seasons, distributed in the eight directions, governing the growth and nourishment of all things. When wind comes from its proper direction (seasonal wind), people infected with it rarely suffer fatal diseases; when wind comes from an improper direction (non-seasonal evil wind), people infected with it often suffer fatal diseases.
When causing disease, the pathogen lodges between the skin, unable to penetrate inward or be excreted outward. If it enters the meridians and circulates within the five Zang organs, it produces diseases corresponding to each organ.
Heart Zhongfeng: The patient can only lie on their back and cannot turn sideways, accompanied by sweating. If the lips are red and sweating occurs, it is treatable; moxibustion should be applied immediately to Xinshu (BL15, Heart Shu) for one hundred Zhu units. If the lips appear cyanotic, black, white, or yellow, this indicates heart failure with water qi overwhelming the heart. If the face and eyes appear vacant and there is occasional tremor or fright, it is untreatable, and death will occur within five to six days.
Liver Zhongfeng: The patient can only sit in a squatting position and cannot lower their head. If the area around both eyes extending to the forehead shows a slight cyanotic hue, and the lips are cyanotic while the face is yellow, it is treatable; moxibustion should be applied immediately to Ganshu (BL18, Liver Shu) for one hundred Zhu units. If the color is deeply cyanotic and black, and the face is half yellow and half white, the liver has been damaged, it is untreatable, and death will occur within a few days.
Spleen Zhongfeng: The patient sits in a squatting position with abdominal fullness, generalized jaundice, and vomiting of salty fluid. This is treatable; moxibustion should be applied immediately to Pishu (BL20, Spleen Shu) for one hundred Zhu units. If the hands and feet are cyanotic, it is untreatable.
Kidney Zhongfeng: The patient sits in a squatting position with lower back pain. If no yellow patches the size of a cake are observed on either side of the hypochondrium, it is treatable; moxibustion should be applied immediately to Shenshu (BL23, Kidney Shu) for one hundred Zhu units. If the teeth are yellowish-red, the hair at the temples stands erect, and the complexion is like earth, it is untreatable.
Lung Zhongfeng: The patient lies on their back with chest fullness, shortness of breath, dizziness, stifling sensation, and sweating. If the area below the eyes, on both sides of the nose extending down to the mouth, appears white, it is treatable; moxibustion should be applied immediately to Feishu (BL13, Lung Shu) for one hundred Zhu units. If the color is yellow, the lung has been damaged and transformed into blood stasis, making it untreatable. The patient will speak deliriously, grasp at empty air pointing to the ground, or pick at clothing seams. Such patients will die after several days.
Palpation of the pulse: A weak pulse also indicates wind; a slow and large pulse also indicates wind; a floating and deficient pulse also indicates wind; a slippery and scattered pulse also indicates wind.
If the Wind pathogen first invades the Yin aspect and the disease manifests in the five Zang organs, the symptoms include sudden unconsciousness, gurgling sounds in the throat, tongue stiffness, and inability to speak. If sweating occurs and the body becomes soft, it is treatable. If the area under the eyes and above the philtrum on both sides is white, it is treatable. If one eye is black and the other red, accompanied by foaming at the mouth, it is untreatable. If there is no sweating and the body is rigid, death will occur within seven days.
