Labor and injury lead to the deficiency of blood and qi, causing an imbalance between yin and yang, resulting in mutual excess and weakness. When yang is in excess, heat occurs; when yin is in excess, cold occurs. The mutual invasion of yin and yang thus causes chills.
This condition arises from labor-induced damage to blood and qi, leading to a severance and blockage between yin and yang, preventing the smooth flow of cold and hot energies. Heat generated in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner) causes dryness of the mouth. For such conditions, decoctions, moxibustion/warming therapies, acupuncture, and stone needles have specific prescriptions. Methods for tonification, nourishment, and guidance/exercise are attached below.
The "Health Preservation Formulas · Guidance Methods" states: Sit facing east, tilt the head back and hold the breath five times. Move the tongue within the mouth, rinse with saliva fourteen times (two sets of seven), and then swallow. This cures dry mouth. If one can guide kidney water to rise and transform into "Liquor Spring" (sweet saliva) reaching the throat, the Liquor Spring will be sweet and delicious, eliminating bitter taste in the mouth, keeping it fragrant and clean, and harmonizing the taste of food. Long-term practice makes the taste like sweet dew, eliminating hunger and thirst.
It also states: Sit facing east, tilt the head back and hold the breath five times. Move the tongue within the mouth, rinse with saliva fourteen times, and then swallow. This treats bitter taste and dryness of the mouth.
There are five types of steaming disorders:
1. Bone Steaming (Gu Zheng): Its root is in the Kidney. The body is cool upon waking but becomes hot in the evening. There is irritability, restless sleep, loss of appetite, dark yellow urine, mental confusion, shortness of breath with weakness, lower back pain, cold feet, and hot palms. If the steaming heat becomes excessive and damages the interior, it transforms into Infantile Malnutrition (Gan Syndrome), consuming the five Zang organs.
2. Vessel Steaming (Mai Zheng): Its root is in the Heart. Irritation and oppression increase daily. The patient throws hands and kicks feet, desires water slightly, produces white froth in the mouth, and speaks incoherently during sleep. Or there is fear and instability, with a rapid pulse. During severe steaming, it may transform into Gan Syndrome, causing oppression below the navel or severe diarrhea that does not stop.
3. Skin Steaming (Pi Zheng): Its root is in the Lung. There must be severe panting, dry nose, lack of moisture in the mouth, white coating on the tongue, and urine as red as blood. During severe steaming, there is chest fullness, or the patient claims to have contracted "Injection Heat," distension under both hypochondria, severe cough, and spitting of blood.
4. Flesh Steaming (Rou Zheng): Its root is in the Spleen. The body feels hot like fire, with irritability and no sweat. There is abdominal distension, nausea after eating, urine resembling blood, and constipation. During severe steaming, the body swells, eyes become red, and sleep is restless.
5. Interior Steaming (Nei Zheng), also called Blood Steaming. It is named so because there is external cold but internal heat, with intense heat felt when touching the bones. Its root lies in the Five Zang and Six Fu organs. This condition usually follows an illness, leading to emaciation of flesh and bone, loss of appetite, or dry, lusterless skin. During severe steaming, limbs gradually thin, and the dorsum of the foot swells.
There are also twenty-three types of steaming disorders:
1. Bladder Steaming: Yellow-red urine.
2. Jade Chamber Steaming: In men, seminal emission and leakage; in women, irregular menstruation.
3. Brain Steaming: Dizziness and muggy heat.
4. Marrow Steaming: Boiling heat in the marrow.
5. Bone Steaming: Blackening of teeth.
6. Tendon Steaming: Dryness of nails.
7. Blood Steaming: Dryness of hair.
8. Vessel Steaming: Irregular pulse.
9. Liver Steaming: Dark vision.
10. Heart Steaming: Dry tongue.
11. Spleen Steaming: Chapped lips.
12. Lung Steaming: Dry nose.
13. Kidney Steaming: Dryness of both ears.
14. Bladder Steaming: Dryness of the right ear.
15. Gallbladder Steaming: Loss of color in the whites of the eyes.
16. Stomach Steaming: Pain under the tongue.
17. Small Intestine Steaming: Dryness of the lower lip.
18. Large Intestine Steaming: Dryness and pain in the right nostril.
19. Sanjiao Steaming: Alternating chills and fever in miscellaneous diseases.
20. Flesh Steaming.
21. Skin Steaming.
22. Epidermis Steaming.
23. Qi Steaming: Generalized body heat.
All various steaming disorders mostly occur after the recovery from febrile diseases, triggered by consuming beef, mutton, fatty/greasy foods, alcohol, or sexual activity. If long-term steaming is not eliminated, it often transforms into Gan Syndrome. One must first prevent pathology in the lower part and must not treat lightly or recklessly.
