During childbirth, blood and amniotic fluid are discharged together, leading to dryness of the viscera's blood and insufficiency of body fluids (Jin-Ye). If there is pre-existing deficient heat (Xu-Re), the dryness and depletion will intensify, thus causing thirst.
Postpartum residual diseases (Chanhou Yujì) arise from labor injuries to the viscera during childbirth, resulting in insufficient Qi and Blood. If one engages in early physical exertion before the recovery period (typically one month) has elapsed, the deficiency fails to recover, allowing Wind pathogenic factors (Feng-Xie) to take advantage of the weakness. This leads to fatigue and emaciation of the thigh muscles. If Cold-Wind enters the intestines and stomach, causing them to be deficient and cold, it results in intermittent dysentery; if it invades and battles with Blood, it causes menstrual obstruction and sluggish flow; if Cold battles with Qi and Blood, it also causes abdominal pain. The pathogen attacks wherever the viscera and abdomen are weak, transforming into various diseases due to the damage caused by childbirth and the lingering pathogenic influence that fails to resolve, leading to emaciation, exhaustion, and fluctuating severity of symptoms—hence termed "postpartum residual diseases."
Childbirth damages and disturbs Qi and Blood, injuring the viscera. If one rises and labors early before the condition has stabilized and recovered, Qi deficiency allows Wind pathogenic factors to invade and cause disease, hence termed "Zhong Feng" (Wind Strike/Stroke, referring here to postpartum wind invasion). If Wind-Cold initially lodges in the skin and meridians, it causes pain, numbness, or shortness of breath; if the sinews and vessels harbor Cold, it leads to spasms, convulsions, or hemiplegia/facial paralysis; if it harbors Dampness, it causes stiffness with a slow and weak pulse; if it enters and injures the viscera, it causes mental confusion and palpitations. Depending on which viscera or meridians are injured, various diseases manifest. Generally, in Zhong Feng, Wind first lodges in the skin, then enters deeply to injure the Five Zang organs due to deficiency, often entering via the Back-Shu points of the respective organs.
If Heart Zhong Feng occurs, the patient prefers lying supine and cannot turn sideways, accompanied by sweating. If the lips are red and moist with saliva, it is treatable; urgently moxa the Xinshu (BL-15) point 100 moxa cones. If the lips are blue, white, yellow, or black, this indicates Heart failure with Water overflowing; if the face appears vacant and trembles intermittently, these are untreatable conditions, and death will occur within five to six days.
If Liver Zhong Feng occurs, the patient sits hunched and cannot lower their head. If the area around both eyes and forehead shows slight blueness, with blue lips and a yellow face, it is treatable; urgently moxa the Ganshu (BL-18) point 100 moxa cones. If the color is deep blue-black, and the face is half yellow and half white, the Liver is already damaged and untreatable, with death occurring in a few days.
If Spleen Zhong Feng occurs, the patient sits hunched with abdominal fullness, generalized jaundice, and vomiting of salty water. It is treatable; urgently moxa the Pishu (BL-20) point 100 moxa cones. If the hands and feet are blue, it is untreatable.
Kidney Zhong Feng presents with the patient sitting hunched and suffering from lower back pain. If observing the left and right hypochondriac regions, there are no yellow patches as large as a cake, it is treatable; urgently moxa the Shenshu (BL-23) point 100 moxa cones. If the teeth are yellow-red, the sideburns stand erect, and the face has an earthy color, it is untreatable.
Lung Zhong Feng presents with the patient lying supine, experiencing chest fullness, shortness of breath, dizziness, stifling sensation, and sweating. If the area under the eyes, on both sides of the nose, extending down to the mouth, is white, it is treatable; urgently moxa the Feishu (BL-13) point 100 moxa cones. If the color is yellow, the Lung is already damaged and transformed into blood stasis, making it untreatable. The patient may exhibit hallucinations such as grasping at empty air or picking at clothes repeatedly...
