The eyes are the external manifestation of the Liver. The Liver stores Blood and belongs to the Foot Jueyin Meridian (Zu Jue Yin Jin Mai). Its meridian originates from the pubic hair on the big toe and ascends to connect with the eye system. If the Qi and Blood in this meridian are deficient, and are invaded by Wind-Heat pathogenic factors, blood vessels may grow upon the sclera (Bai Jing), which is termed "Fei Xue" (Flying Blood).
Darkening of the eyes is due to Liver deficiency. The eyes are the essence of the Zang-Fu organs and the external manifestation of the Liver, which stores Blood. When the Zang-Fu organs are damaged and Qi and Blood are insufficient, the deficient Liver fails to nourish the eyes, resulting in a lack of luster and clarity, thus causing the eyes to appear dark.
The essence of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs all ascends to pour into the eyes; the eyes are the external manifestation of the Liver. The Liver stores Blood. If Qi and Blood are insufficient, Liver deficiency occurs, making it susceptible to Wind pathogenic factors. The Wind pathogen clashes with the essential Qi, causing the essence to gather and form upon the sclera, surrounding the margin of the cornea (Hei Jing). This results in turbid vision and indistinct boundaries between the white and black parts of the eye, referred to as "Zhi" (a specific ocular condition described in the text).
Itching and tearing of the eyes occur because Wind pathogen lodges between the eyelids, clashing with Qi, Blood, and body fluids. This causes the eyes to itch and tear, keeping the eyelids constantly moist, hence the condition is associated with excessive tearing.
Discharge (Chi) in the eyes arises because the eyes are the essence of the Zang-Fu organs and the external manifestation of the Liver. The eyes serve as the pathway for upper-body fluids. If there is Heat in the Zang-Fu organs, the Qi steams upward to the Liver and rushes to the eyelids, causing the fluid pathway to become hot and obstructed. Stagnation leads to the formation of discharge (eye boogers).
The eyes are the essence of the Zang-Fu Qi and Blood and the external manifestation of the Liver; indeed, the Qi and Blood of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs all ascend to nourish the eyes. If Qi and Blood are deficient, the skin pores open, allowing Wind pathogen to invade. The Wind lodges between the eyelid skin, causing the skin to become lax and sagging, covering the eyes so they cannot open. This is popularly called "Sui Mu" (Ptosis/Drooping Eyelid).
The eyes are the gathering place of the essence of the Zang-Fu organs and the convergence of the Zong Mai (Great Vessels), serving as the external manifestation of the Liver. If Wind pathogen and retained fluid exist within the Zang-Fu organs, invading the Liver Qi and rushing upward to the eyes, conditions such as Yi Zhang (ocular membranes/cataracts), Guan Zhu (corneal opacity/pupil distortion), and Ru Rou (Pterygium) may develop. If there is unilateral deficiency in the meridians, the occlusion covers one pupil asymmetrically, causing monocular blindness or visual field defects, termed "Miao Mu".
La Mu (Wax Eye) refers to a condition where fly larvae cause ulcers in the eye, hence the name.
Fei Mu (Fatty Eye) is characterized by spots growing on the sclera, resembling floating duckweed, elm seeds, whitewash powder, or appearing green-black like grease on soup surface. This leads to dim vision and is popularly called "Fei Mu". The essence of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs ascends to the eyes as the Liver's external manifestation, the convergence of Zong Mai, and the pathway for upper fluids. This condition arises from deficiency of Zang-Fu Qi, where body fluids are clashed by pathogenic factors, transforming into disease.
