When the zang-fu organs are harmonious, qi and blood are abundant, and wind pathogens or demonic influences cannot invade. If ying (nutritive) and wei (defensive) qi are deficient and damaged, spiritual energy weakens, allowing demonic essences to enter the zang organs. The condition resembles pregnancy, hence it is called "Ghost Fetus" (Guǐ Tāi).
Yang exerts its influence while yin transforms; when essence is abundant and surplus, twin fetuses may form. Within the uterus, the fetus is nourished by qi and blood. If cold and heat are regulated appropriately, and deficiency and excess are balanced, with strong and robust qi and blood, the fetus will not be injured or die prematurely. However, if there is improper regulation of cold and heat, leading to damage and weakness of qi and blood, the fetus will become dry and atrophic, unable to survive. In cases of twins where one dies, it is because the blood encounters cold, combined with irregular menstrual nourishment, causing one fetus to perish. A sign that the fetus has died is a sensation of cold above the abdomen.
Within the uterus, the fetus relies on qi and blood for nourishment. If qi and blood are deficient and damaged, and the uterus is cold, the fetus becomes dry and atrophic, stagnating without growing. Its presentation involves the fetus remaining completely immobile within the womb; even after the full term has passed, delivery does not occur. This is the characteristic sign. When the fetus inside becomes dry and atrophic, it mostly results in death.
Failure to deliver past the expected time occurs due to the presence of chronic cold blood in the uterus alongside the fetus. The cold blood clashes, hindering fetal growth and causing abnormal timing of delivery. If the fetus remains in the uterus for an extended period but appears small, dry, and weak with difficulty moving, it indicates the presence of pathological factors, necessitating a delayed delivery.
Abortion damages the meridians; once the meridians are damaged, bleeding persists. Excessive blood loss leads to restlessness and oppression, potentially resulting in death.
This arises from pre-existing wind-cold pathogens. Following abortion, cold blood clashes, and due to qi deficiency, rebellious qi ascends, causing blood coagulation and retention. If the retained blood rebels upward towards the heart, it causes restlessness and oppression; severe cases can lead to death.
This occurs immediately after abortion when the woman is physically weak and lacks the strength to expel the placenta using qi effort. Exposure to cold causes blood stasis, preventing the expulsion of the placenta. If the retained placenta presses against the heart, it causes restlessness and oppression, potentially leading to death.
This results from insufficient bleeding during abortion, leaving residual blood unexpelled. If recovery is incomplete and physical exertion is excessive, exposure to wind-cold causes these pathogens to clash with qi and blood, resulting in abdominal pain. Physical exhaustion prevents qi and blood from recovering, leading to deficiency and fatigue. Furthermore, residual blood clots internally, often transforming into Blood Masses (Xuě Jiǎ), which also obstructs menstruation.
