A person may suddenly see evil spirits, curse loudly, blame themselves, spit out thick saliva, look upward with their eyes, and be filled with rage, making them untouchable. People think this is a disease caused by possessing evil spirits, but who would know that it is actually the evil of Liver Qi? Evil spirits vary, but generally they do not depart from the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). This disease involves possessing the evil of Wood Qi (corresponding to the Liver). However, evil spirits invade the human body only when taking advantage of its deficiency; if one's Liver Qi is not deficient, from where would the Wood evil enter? Therefore, treating Wood evil requires tonifying the Righteous Qi (Zheng Qi); when Righteous Qi is vigorous, evil spirits cannot remain. Although the evil spirits are very strong, if one merely tonifies the Righteous Qi, the evil spirits may reject (Ge Ju) entry. One must assist the tonification of Righteous Qi with herbs that dispel evil spirits; then the evil spirits will naturally retreat, the Righteous Qi will grow daily, and the evil spirits will dissipate secretly without fierce contention. Use the Formula Zuke Tang (Expel Guest Decoction): Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 liang), Chao Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus Praeparatus, 3 qian), Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 1 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, 1 qian), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Bai Fan (Alumen, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, the spirit calms; after two doses, anger subsides; after three doses, cursing stops, and phlegm-saliva gradually diminishes; after four doses, full recovery occurs.

This formula pacifies Liver Qi and drains fire, tonifies Liver Blood and transforms phlegm. Once phlegm-fire is cleared, where can the evil spirit hide? Moreover, half of the herbs in the formula attack evil spirits; since the Wood evil is already vigorous, how dare it contend? It abandons and leaves.

For this syndrome, Dinghun Tang (Stabilize Soul Decoction) is also wonderful.

Someone suddenly encounters evil spirits, falls down at once, spits phlegm-saliva, cannot make sound, goes mad and moves chaotically, eyes turn bright red, face is as red as fire, and hair sometimes points upward. This is the evil of Heart Qi. The Heart belongs to Fire; evil invading the Heart should be Fire evil attacking the Heart. However, the Heart is the palace of purity and cannot be invaded; if invaded, death ensues immediately. It is impossible for evil to attach to the body for an extended period without causing death. This is Fire evil invading the Pericardium (Tan Zhong, the minister organ representing the Heart), not the Heart organ itself. The Pericardium is the assistant minister to the Heart sovereign. When evil enters the Pericardium, approaching the Heart, the Pericardium suffers invasion, causing fear and trembling in the Heart. It carefully closes the organs, unable to issue orders to expel the evil. As an assistant minister, fearing harm to the Heart sovereign, anger fills the chest, manifests on the face, eyes burst open, and extreme indignation causes hair to point upward. This is caused by the provocation of evil. Although the evil entered because the Pericardium invited it, if one does not treat the deficiency of the Pericardium but only drains Fire evil, Righteous Qi will be further depleted, and the evil aura will become more vigorous. This is not a good treatment method. Use the Formula Zhufu Quchu Tang (Assist Fu Organs to Expel Evil Decoction): Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Sheng Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 3 qian), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix, 2 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 2 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, 1 qian), Bai Wei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix, 2 qian), Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After two doses, evil retreats.

This formula assists the Righteous Qi of the Pericardium and adds ingredients to drain fire and eliminate phlegm. Thus, evil cannot withstand Righteous Qi and flees, disappearing without a trace.

For this syndrome, Liangxin Dan (Cool the Heart Pill) is also miraculous.

Decoct in water and take orally.
After two doses, peace is achieved.

Someone temporarily possesses evil spirits, sees ghosts and gods, speaks nonsense, claiming to be cut by knives or axes, or shot by bows and arrows, suffering pain all over the body, crying out incessantly. People also consider this possession, but who knows it is the evil of Lung Qi? The Lung belongs to Metal. When evil is strong and takes advantage of Lung Qi deficiency, it is naturally Metal Qi evil. Its deity must be a general in golden armor, its ghost must have a ferocious appearance, or have severed heads and broken arms, dripping with blood. It seems the evil enters from outside, not summoned from within. However, the Lung stores the Po (Corporeal Soul). When Lung Qi is deficient, the Po wanders outside. The Po belongs to Yin and is originally of the same category as gods and ghosts; thus, it easily感召 (calls forth) various evils into the body. Furthermore, the Lung governs the skin and hair. When Lung Qi is deficient, the pores of the skin and hair open completely. Evil enters the Fu organs through these empty apertures, and from there enters the Zang organs. What difficulty is there? Therefore, treating this evil requires treating Lung Qi. But the Lung is a delicate organ; herbs treating the Lung cannot enter directly. How can attacking herbs reach the Lung? The Lung fears Fire; the Lung likes Earth. Tonifying the Earth of the Spleen and Stomach makes Lung Righteous Qi vigorous; draining Fire of the Heart Meridian makes Lung evil qi decline. In tonifying Earth and draining Fire, add a little phlegm-transforming and evil-expelling herbs. Use the Formula Zhujin Quxie Dan (Assist Metal Expel Evil Pill): Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 liang), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 5 fen), Su Ye (Perillae Folium, 1 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 2 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 1 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix, 3 qian), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, the heart clears; after two doses, the Po stabilizes; after three doses, evil disperses.

This formula treats the Heart, Lung, Spleen, and Stomach meridians simultaneously. While attacking evil, it does not damage Righteous Qi; thus, when Righteous Qi returns, evil disperses.

Someone suddenly possesses evil qi, eyes become dim, seeing the seductive beauty of women or the charm of children, staring affectionately, flirting with each other, leading to the entanglement of heart and soul, delirious speech, obscenity, whispering to oneself, feeling lost. All say it is possession, but this evil is actually the Water evil of Kidney Qi. Evil often enters taking advantage of sinful thoughts. The ancients said: If the heart is upright, why fear evil invasion? When Righteous Qi is not weak, evil and righteousness are separate paths; how can they coexist? Only when Righteous Qi is deficient and sinful thoughts arise does one provide an opportunity for evil to enter. But the Kidney has only tonification and no purgation. Nowadays, everyone's Kidney Qi is deficient; Kidney deficiency implies Righteous Qi deficiency. When it is said the Kidney has only tonification and no purgation, it refers to the True Yin of the Kidney, not the Righteous Qi of the Kidney. When Righteous Qi is deficient and Evil Fire is vigorous, Evil Fire generates Evil Qi. So, when Righteous Qi is intact, although True Yin is slightly deficient, evil cannot enter. Only when True Yin is greatly deficient and Righteous Qi is lost can evil rely on it. The treatment method must tonify the Righteous Qi of the Kidney; the Evil Qi need not be treated separately. Attacking evil in the Kidney necessarily damages Righteous Qi in the Kidney. Therefore, the method of attacking evil lies not in attacking the Kidney, but in attacking the Stomach, because the Stomach is the gate of the Kidney. Evil is at the gate of the Kidney, and Kidney Righteous Qi cannot ascend to connect with the Heart, resulting in Zhengsheng (whispering/repetitive speech). Destroying the evil at the gate is precisely saving the Kidney. Use the Formula Daoguan Jiushen Tang (Break Gate Save Kidney Decoction): Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 5 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Qian Shi (Euryales Semen, 5 qian), Yi Ren (Coicis Semen, 1 liang), Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen, 3 qian), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 3 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 5 qian), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, phlegm-saliva disappears; after two doses, heart and soul stabilize; after three doses, full recovery.

This formula treats Stomach evil but uses Kidney herbs; it is a dual-treatment method. Some say treating the Kidney should not involve the Stomach, as the Stomach is above and the Kidney below. Why does treating the Stomach cure it? One does not know that herbs entering the Kidney must first enter the Stomach before reaching the Kidney. Thus, draining Stomach evil is draining Kidney evil. Now treating both, evil has no place to hide in either meridian, so功效 (efficacy) is achieved without many doses.

For this syndrome, Yizhi Zhushen Tang (Wisdom Assist Spirit Decoction) is also effective.

Someone temporarily feels evil qi, shouting wildly, cursing people upon sight, extremely thirsty and demanding drink, sweating profusely, resembling Wangyang (Loss of Yang Syndrome). However, Wangyang syndrome inevitably involves restlessness and agitation. Possession disease involves only loud calling while lying in bed, absolutely no climbing walls or roofs. Hearing wood sounds causes laughter, hearing human speech causes smiling, seeing daylight causes fear, seeing the sun causes惊 (startle). People think it is Yangming Heat Disease, but who knows it is the evil of Earth Qi (Spleen and Stomach)? Spleen and Stomach belong to Earth; Spleen is Yin, Stomach is Yang. Earth evil is mostly irregular qi, so the disease combines Yin and Yang, making it difficult to treat. Attacking Yang while Yin evil remains leads to lingering problems; destroying Yin while Yang evil remains leads to more manic inflammation. One must treat both Yin and Yang simultaneously for evil to dare not remain. Use the Formula Jiangong Tang (Simultaneous Attack Decoction): Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 5 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 2 qian), Tian Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, 3 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 liang). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, spirit settles; after two doses, spirit is peaceful; after three doses, full recovery.

This formula treats Spleen and Stomach simultaneously, draining Yang fire to calm the Stomach, removing Yin phlegm to nourish the Spleen. When Spleen and Stomach Qi are vigorous, evil cannot invade Righteous Qi. Humans rely on Spleen and Stomach as the foundation. Earth evil invades by attaching to Earth. Why is it called difficult to treat? One does not know that when Righteous Earth Qi is mixed with Evil Earth Qi, Righteous Earth collapses. The decline of Earth's Righteous Qi allows Earth's evil to enter. Should we not urgently tonify Righteous Qi? Therefore, for all evils attacking humans, one should urgently tonify Righteous Qi, especially for Earth evil. If one merely attacks evil, ten people will die ten times; this must be guarded against.

For this syndrome, Peitu Yin (Nourish Earth Drink) is also miraculously effective.

Someone possessed by demons for a year without cure, naked with staring eyes, cursing loudly and driving people away, not allowing doctors near. Treatment with medicine causes them to fall to the ground, helpless. People think evil enters the Heart, but who knows it is Fire-Heat in the Stomach? Once Stomach Fire erupts, it is mostly incurable. Why does demon possession not cause mania? Mania is self-induced madness, not someone else forcing madness upon oneself. Forced madness is still a demon, not a disease. Those without demons can be treated for mania; those with demons, if treated for mania, cannot swallow medicine. What then? Mania always involves Stomach heat. Heat diseases find water pleasing. I use water to resolve heat, and thus use water to calm mania. Use the Formula Zhenhui San (Churn Water Powder):
Take dozens of earthworms, mash them, throw into water, stir well, wait a moment, remove mud. Take a large basin of this clear water, place it before the patient. Do not urge them to drink. Seeing the color, the patient rejoices, drinks it themselves, sleeps peacefully. Upon waking, mania stabilizes, and demons leave.

Demons love cleanliness and hate filth. Earthworms in water make it filthy. Filth is what demons hate, but water pleases the patient. The patient wants to drink, and demons cannot forbid it. Earthworms resolve evil in the Stomach and clear the Heart, so entering the mouth feels refreshing. The Heart clears, heat resolves, and how can demons possess and cause mania again?

For this syndrome, Jiemei Dan (Resolve Demon Pill) is also miraculously effective.
Bai Fan (Alumen, 2 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Li Lu (Veratri Nigrum Rhizoma, 1 qian). Decoct in water. Hold the patient and force-feed. After one dose, massive vomiting occurs, and recovery happens. Do not administer a second dose.
