为先,三邪并犯,则邪气弥漫,非用祛邪之药,安能济哉?不知一邪之犯,其力专;

Contracted by damp-heat qi, and suddenly injured by wind pathogen, the jaw is locked and speech is impossible, the neck and back are stiff and uncomfortable, the hands and feet are spasmodic and contracted, and the body bends backward like a bow (opisthotonos). People think it is Taiyang syndrome cold damage, who knows it is Taiyang Jing spasm disease. Spasm disease also has differences among Three Yang and Three Yin meridians, and can also transmit through meridians, with symptoms identical to cold damage; however, cold damage is solely caused by wind pathogen, whereas spasm disease is formed by the combination of wind, dampness, and heat pathogens. It seems that treating cold damage requires only addressing the wind pathogen without difficulty, while treating spasm disease requires simultaneously dispelling dampness and heat, which is not easy. Who knows that where pathogenic factors gather, the healthy qi must be deficient. One pathogen invading already indicates a deficiency of healthy qi, let alone three pathogens invading simultaneously. By tonifying healthy qi to expel pathogens, treating spasm disease is not difficult for rapid recovery. Some ask: When one pathogen invades, expelling the pathogen should still be prioritized; when three pathogens invade simultaneously, the pathogens are pervasive, how can treatment succeed without using pathogen-expelling medicines? Not knowing that one pathogen invading has concentrated force, while multiple pathogens invading have dispersed momentum. Concentrated force is suitable for attacking, dispersed momentum can be treated with tonification. Within tonification, employing attacking methods, why would it not work? Unfortunately, this condition presents similarly to cold damage, so sudden use of tonification is contraindicated, leading to death. If one understands the method of tonification and treats according to syndromes, it is actually very easy. For such a case presenting with Taiyang signs, one should not directly treat the Taiyang pathogen but should tonify Taiyang healthy qi. When Taiyang healthy qi is vigorous, wind, dampness, and heat pathogens will dissipate naturally without direct attack. The formula used is Wu Ling San (Five-Ling Powder) with modifications.
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (1 liang), Poria (1 liang), Alismatis Rhizoma (3 qian), Polyporus (1 qian), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (5 fen), Cinnamomi Ramulus (3 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, opisthotonos stabilizes; after two doses, jaw locking ceases and hand/foot spasms resolve; after three doses, all symptoms recover completely.
Wu Ling San specializes in promoting urination to drain bladder water. Among the three pathogens, dampness is the most difficult to remove. First draining dampness allows fire pathogen to exit with water, leaving wind pathogen without support. Thus, small doses of Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix and Cinnamomi Ramulus are used to dispel wind, making wind resolution easier. Moreover, Wu Ling San is not merely a damp-draining formula; Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma and Poria originally strengthen the spleen and generate stomach qi. Now, increasing their dosage as sovereign herbs makes tonification heavy and draining light, thus rapidly enhancing strengthening efficacy. If used in small amounts, attacking exceeds tonifying, yielding no benefit.
This condition can also be effectively treated with Gui Ling Yi Qiang Tang.
Poria (1 liang), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (2 qian), Coicis Semen (1 liang), Cinnamomi Ramulus (3 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Contracted by damp-heat qi and wind pathogen, the neck and back are stiff, eyes sometimes look left and right, and hands and feet twitch. People think it is Shaoyang syndrome cold damage, who knows it is Shaoyang Jing spasm disease. Shaoyang meridian resides between exterior and interior; its trend is about to enter the Liver but remains in the Yangming meridian. Thus, contracting three pathogens simultaneously causes eyes to look left and right, manifesting between Taiyang and Yangming. Hand and foot twitching occurs because wind nature is active while dampness nature is static, contradicting each other: wind wants to move but is restrained by dampness; dampness wants to stay still but is激ated by wind; heat pathogen strikes from within. This causes twitching. Persistent twitching leads wind to pull upward, causing neck stiffness, while dampness stays inside, resulting in rigidity. Treatment must harmonize Shaoyang healthy qi, using few dispersing agents to easily resolve the conflict. The formula used is Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with modifications.
Bupleuri Radix (2 qian), Paeoniae Radix Alba (5 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (3 qian), Poria (5 qian), Scutellariae Radix (1 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Disease reduces after one dose, fully recovers after two doses.
Xiao Chai Hu Tang is the sacred medicine for harmonizing Shaoyang. Adding Paeoniae Radix Alba and Angelicae Sinensis tonifies Liver qi, making Liver vigorous so pathogens dare not hide in the Liver. Adding 5 qian of Poria strengthens the Stomach and drains dampness, preventing pathogens from returning to the Stomach. Poria works with Bupleuri Radix to dispel wind-heat, guiding them into the Bladder for easy downward excretion, a divine method.
This condition can also be effectively treated with Long Che San.
Bupleuri Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (1 qian each), Paeoniae Radix Alba, Poria (5 qian each), Plantaginis Semen (3 qian), Gentianae Radix (5 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Contracted by damp-heat qi and wind pathogen, hands and feet are pulled, muscles twitch, chest is distended, head bows down looking at the ground, elbows and knees touch. People think it is Yangming syndrome cold damage, who knows it is Yangming Jing spasm syndrome. Yangming belongs to Stomach Earth; wind entering the Stomach turns to heat. Since heat qi was originally contracted, heat aids heat, which should lead to sweating and Yang collapse. Why do muscle twitches and chest distension occur without madness, and hand/foot pulling without sweating? Instead, the head bows down, lacking the symptom of climbing high and shouting; elbows and knees touch, lacking the symptom of discarding clothes and running. This is precisely due to dampness pathogen mixing. Yangming fire hates dryness most. With dampness in the Stomach, although it insults Stomach Earth, it also benefits Stomach dryness, so even if sweating occurs, it does not lead to Yang collapse or madness. If wind-dispersing drugs are wrongly used to scatter exterior pathogens, uncontrolled sweating will result. Zhang Zhongjing once used Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) to purge pathogens; those with strong Spleen qi suffer no damage, otherwise purging leads to Yin collapse with unexpected dangers. Since wind, dampness, and heat enter the Stomach together, treatment must address the Stomach without injuring it. The formula used is Quan Yin Jiu Wei Tang (Complete Yin Stomach-Saving Decoction):
Scrophulariae Radix (5 qian), Poria (5 qian), Persicami Semen (1 qian), Puerariae Radix (1 qian), Ginseng Radix (1 qian), Ophiopogonis Radix (5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Half recovery after one dose, full recovery after two doses.
The formula nourishes Stomach Yin without damaging Stomach Qi. Scrophulariae Radix removes heat, Puerariae Radix removes wind, Poria removes dampness; all three pathogens are removed, while Ginseng generates Stomach Qi and Ophiopogonis Radix generates Lung Qi. Then, is Persicami Semen unnecessary? Persicami Semen is highly moving. With three pathogens in the Stomach and more tonics than attackers, pathogens cling due to tonification. Adding Persicami Semen, a swift agent, prevents tonification stagnation and ensures effective attack, achieving success.
This condition can also be effectively treated with Er Ling Huai Gao Tang.
Gypsum Fibrosum, Polyporus, Sophorae Flos (3 qian each), Poria (5 qian), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (5 fen), Scutellariae Radix (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Contracted by damp-heat qi and wind pathogen, fever and abdominal pain, muscle tremors, limbs rigid and urgent. People think it is Taiyin syndrome cold damage, who knows it is Taiyin Jing spasm syndrome. Taiyin is the Spleen meridian, belonging to Damp Earth. How can Damp Earth endure repeated damp pathogen invasion? Dampness entering the Spleen is hard to separate and eliminate. Removing dampness leaves the root; repeated damp contraction repeats previous illness. Added heat causes steaming, added wind causes waves, naturally disrupting the Middle Jiao and causing turmoil. Rigidity forms, tremors appear. Using earth-stabilizing drugs strengthens Earth, preventing Water overflow; drying Water removes Earth depression. Even if Wind tries to cause trouble, peace is restored, resolving resentment. However, people often resort to purging, not knowing purging often causes Yin collapse. Without Yin to nourish Zang-Fu organs and limbs, rigidity and tremors lead to death from Yin collapse. The formula used is An Tu San (Earth-Stabilizing Powder):
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (1 liang), Poria (5 qian), Plantaginis Semen (3 qian), Coicis Semen (5 qian), Phaseoli Rubri Semen (1 qian), Tectonae Herba (1 qian), Bupleuri Radix (5 fen), Dendrobii Caulis (3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
This formula uses water-draining drugs as sovereign, yet remains a Spleen-strengthening drug. Strong Earth controls Water, aided by draining agents. This condition involves difficult-to-treat dampness; attacking dampness alone easily disperses wind and heat pathogens. Attacking pathogens requires attacking the solid core. Like facing a great enemy with rebels everywhere, attacking flanks brings full enemy resistance and defeat; attacking the center breaks through, capturing leaders, causing remaining forces to flee. Treating spasm by focusing on dampness follows this logic.
This condition can also be effectively treated with Yi Shu Ding Jing Tang.
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (1 liang), Coicis Semen, Euryales Semen (5 qian each), Bupleuri Radix, Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Platycodi Radix (1 qian each), Malt (2 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Contracted by damp-heat and wind, epilepsy ensues, body curls, legs bend, unable to flex or extend. People think it is Shaoyin syndrome cold damage, who knows it is Shaoyin Jing spasm disease. Shaoyin is the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian. Kidney prefers heat over cold, moisture over dryness. Why does spasm with dampness and heat cause epilepsy, curling, and inability to flex/extend? Kidney hates wind most, likes heat for true Fire generation (not evil Fire suppression), likes true Water nourishment (not evil Water injury). Evil Fire aids dryness, evil Water increases dampness. With two pathogens in Kidney plus wind, suffering is inevitable. Treatment must address damp-heat, assisting slightly with wind-dispelling drugs. The formula used is Zhu Shen Pi Xie Dan (Kidney-Assisting Evil-Expelling Pill):
Poria (5 qian), Coicis Semen (5 qian), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (1 qian), Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma (1 qian), Scrophulariae Radix (3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix treats wind in Kidney; Coicis Semen and Poria remove dampness in Kidney; Scrophulariae Radix and Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma treat heat in Kidney. All three pathogens are treated. Kidney prefers tonification over purging; aren't these purging drugs? Coicis Semen and Poria drain dampness without damaging Yin; Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix dispels wind without harming Qi; Scrophulariae Radix and Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma clear fire without extinguishing light. They are not purging Kidney but tonifying it. Pure purging without tonification is wrong.
This condition can also be effectively treated with San Jing Tang.
Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (1 qian), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (1 liang), Alismatis Rhizoma, Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma, Charred Schizonepetae Spica (2 qian each), Coicis Semen (3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Contracted by damp-heat and wind, cold extremities and diarrhea, tongue retraction and scrotal retraction, back curved shoulders drooping, neck feels pulled, waist feels broken, hands and feet cold, abdomen distended. People think it is Jueyin syndrome cold damage, who knows it is Jueyin Jing spasm syndrome. Wind, dampness, and heat combine to form spasm. Pathogen transmitting to Jueyin enters Liver Wood meridian, becoming more urgent. Mistaken sweating moves dampness. Dampness is Yin but external Yin pathogen, not true Liver blood. Moved Yang enters dampness, is submerged, leading to Yang collapse. Escaped Yang is like a dragon leaving a valley, light and soaring; trapped by dampness, it crawls like a snake, struggling but unable to fly. These spasms result from mistaken sweating. Treatment cannot stick to dispersing pathogens but must tonify healthy qi. Saving collapsed Yang and urgently restoring Yang is key. Yang loss stems from Yin deficiency failing to hold Yang, so tonifying Yang requires tonifying Yin. Tonifying Jueyin Yin starts from Shaoyin Kidney meridian. The formula used is Hui Yin San Jing Tang (Return-Yin Spasm-Resolving Decoction):
Morindae Officinalis Radix (5 qian), Poria (1 liang), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (5 qian), Saposhnikoviae Radix (5 fen), Charred Gardeniae Fructus (1 qian), Paeoniae Radix Alba (5 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (3 qian), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (1 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
This formula tonifies Liver Blood, assisted by dampness-, fire-, and wind-dispelling agents, a correct treatment. Adding Morindae Officinalis Radix tonifies Kidney Fire. Why? To tonify Shaoyin. Jueyin Wood needs Shaoyin Water to grow. But sweating causes Yang collapse, depleting Kidney True Fire. Using only cold herbs to clear heat damages Spleen/Stomach. Morindae Officinalis Radix warms Kidney without excessive heat; Kidney warmth restores Yang, Liver clarity fills Yin. Yin-Yang harmony consolidates internal healthy qi, causing external wind-damp-heat pathogens to break spontaneously. This is a beneficial, harmless method.

Infant head shaking, hand strength, eyes looking up, body trembling, vomiting without diarrhea or diarrhea without vomiting. People think it is convulsive infantile wind, who knows it is spasm formed by wind, heat, and dampness. Infants are pure Yang, not prone to deficiency. However, eating too much fruit causes dampness retention in Stomach; long-standing dampness turns to heat; extreme heat generates wind. This wind arises internally, not externally. Seeing infant head shaking etc., regardless of deficiency/excess, giving Bao Long Wan, then Niu Huang Wan, then mineral/musk drugs to open orifices and calm fright, all lead to immediate death. Alas! "Infantile Wind" has killed millions since its inception, with no doctor correcting it. Yu Jiayan of Nanchang recognized the error and warned loudly. But tradition is deep, and Yu had theory but no formula. I heard my master's detailed explanation, so I discuss it and provide formulas. Infants easily develop spasm due to fragile bones and thin skin, intolerant to wind; pathogen enters pores then Zang-Fu. Their diet prefers cold over hot, damaging Spleen/Stomach, causing vomiting/diarrhea. Vomiting and diarrhea deplete Yin-Yang, expelling stored dampness. Heat remains in Zang-Fu without Yin nourishment, transforming into wind-like symptoms confusing people. Treating only wind without supporting healthy qi leads to ten deaths out of ten. Thus, never dispel wind; doing so distances life. There is truly no wind internally; using wind drugs consumes damaged Qi, accelerating death. Treatment must tonify Spleen/Stomach and stop vomiting/diarrhea, ensuring ten lives out of ten. The formula used is Jiu Er Hui Sheng Tang (Save-Child Return-Life Decoction):
Ginseng Radix (2 qian), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (3 qian), Poria (1 qian), Amomi Fructus Rotundus (3 grains), Charred Black Zingiberis Rhizoma (5 fen), Crataegi Fructus (5 grains), Raphani Semen (5 fen), Plantaginis Semen (1 qian), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (3 fen), Malt (3 fen), Pinelliae Rhizoma (5 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Based on a ten-year-old; halve for five years old. One dose stops vomiting/diarrhea, two doses stop convulsions, three doses cure. This formula tonifies with draining, harmonizing Spleen/Stomach, allowing Yin-Yang mutual assistance, preventing harmful changes. Some say adding wind-dispersing/heat-clearing drugs is okay. In summer, maybe add Scutellariae Radix to clear heat; in winter, add acrid-warm drugs. Post-vomit/diarrhea, heat turns to cold; adding seasonal cold makes cold drugs forbidden. Wind drugs are forbidden in all seasons; if absolutely necessary, add 2-3 fen of Bupleuri Radix.

After infant vomiting/diarrhea, jaw locked silent, hands/feet contracted. People think it is convulsive infantile wind, who knows it is Spleen/Stomach cold-deficiency spasm disease. Infants are pure Yang,先天 Kidney Qi is solid, but postnatal life is damaged. Postnatal life relies on Spleen/Stomach. Eating raw/cold damages postnatal, affecting先天, causing varied symptoms. Post-vomit/diarrhea, no fluids to moisten intestines, no Qi to move limbs. This causes limb bending/twitching. Spleen/Stomach deficiency leads Liver Wood to insult; lack of fluids for Liver causes Liver dryness, fire, and wind. Lung Metal sees Liver insulting Spleen, wants to control Liver to avenge Earth mother, but weak Earth means weak Metal, unable to control Liver, instead bullied by Liver. Lung fears Liver wind-fire, protects itself, cannot save mother, hence silence. Treatment should urgently tonify Spleen/Stomach rather than just treat Liver. The formula used is Huo Er Tang (Revive-Child Decoction):
Paeoniae Radix Alba (3 qian), Poria (5 qian), Ginseng Radix (2 qian), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (3 qian), Gardeniae Fructus (5 fen), Malt (5 fen), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (3 fen), Pinelliae Rhizoma (5 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (1 fen), Malt (5 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally. One dose stops bending/twitching, two doses restore voice, three doses cure.
This formula calms Liver Qi to support Spleen/Stomach Earth. Spleen/Stomach Qi generates, Lung Qi prospers, controlling Liver, stopping wind-fire. Some say weak Lung needs tonification. Lung tonics are moistening, aiding Spleen/Stomach dampness. Spasm suffers from dampness; abundant Poria drains dampness. Better to calm Liver to soothe Lung than moisten Lung to harm Spleen/Stomach.

Infant accidentally contracts wind, fever, body tremors, back of hand extends. People think it is opisthotonos of infantile wind, who knows it is cold pathogen in spasm disease. Infant Qi/Blood not vigorous, intolerant to cold damage fever, causing temporary coma, not wind-induced fright. Treating infant cold damage differs from adults; do not use wind drugs. Deficiency invites wind; treating deficiency expels wind. Here, only cold is invaded, no wind exists, so no wind dispensing needed. Lightly using wind drugs opens wind gates, damages healthy Qi, exposes Ying-Wei, loosens pores, draws external wind deep into viscera, causing incurable conditions. Treatment must tonify healthy Qi, adding few dispersing agents. Cold resolves easily, viscera
