(Wang Ang, *Yi Fang Ji Jie*) Treats diarrhea accompanied by thirst caused by heatstroke.
The original formula of Lizhong Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Ginger Decoction) is modified by adding Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Fuling (Poria). (Original note: "For external contraction of intense summerheat and internal injury from cold and raw food, this formula is indispensable.")
Lianli Tang (Coix Seed and Coptis Decoction) is based on Lizhong Tang, supplemented with Huanglian and Fuling. External contraction of intense summerheat and internal accumulation of cold cause diarrhea and thirst, for which this formula is effective. (The rationale of Lizhong Tang lies in addressing cold in the middle jiao; thus, it serves as the main body. Huanglian is added to clear summerheat, and Fuling to leach out dampness; neither is added merely to treat thirst. Therefore, generally speaking, all cases of thirst should be treated as heat patterns. However, diarrhea with thirst often involves fluid depletion, so sweet-warm herbs that generate fluids and stop thirst should be prioritized. In cases where dampness is the root and heat is the branch, manifesting as thirst without desire to drink, treatment should employ a mixture of bitter and acrid herbs, combining cold and warm properties, rather than relying solely on bitter-cold herbs. This is clear. Furthermore, Huanglian is extremely cold in nature and bitter in taste. Bitter belongs to Fire and Cold belongs to Water. It can treat thirst caused by the disorder of water and fire, specifically damp-heat patterns; however, for thirst caused by dry-fire, it...)

(*Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang*) Treats cold-excess chest binding (Han Shi Jie Xiong), characterized by elevation of the chest and diaphragm, so painful that touch is intolerable.
The original formula of Lizhong Tang is modified by adding Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, bran-fried) one liang and Fuling (Poria) two liang, formed into pills with water.
Zhishi Lizhong Wan includes Fuling, while Ginseng, Licorice, Ginger, and Atractylodes harmonize each other. For pain caused by congealed cold-phlegm in the chest, this method of breaking binding and unblocking Yang is efficacious. (Note: For cold-excess chest binding, grasping the key point ensures...)

(Li Dongyuan) Treats melancholy and depression leading to spleen deficiency and qi stagnation, presenting with fullness and distension in the chest and abdomen, combined with food retention.
Lizhong Tang is modified by adding Qingpi (Tangerine Peel, immature) and Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, mature), each one liang. (If Houpo (Magnolia Bark) is added, it is named Wenwei Tang, with the same indications.)
Zhitang Tang was formulated by Li Dongyuan; it soothes depression and relieves fullness. The general principle uses Lizhong Tang as the base, with Qingpi and Chenpi to break stagnation and gently soothe the Liver. (Depression injuring the middle... then Wood overacts on Earth, breaking stagnation and...)

(Zhang Jiebin, *Xin Fang Ba Zhen*) Treats insufficiency of true Yin, and syndromes of spleen and kidney yang deficiency with cold. For individuals prone to fatigue and overwork who suddenly contract pathogens that cannot be resolved by standard methods, this warming and supporting formula is most excellent; it is also effective for delayed menstruation and abdominal pain in women.
Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root) three to seven qian or one to two liang; Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) two to three qian or five to seven qian; Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) fried until yellow, one to three qian; Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) one to two... (If severe, add Xixin (Asarum) for declining fire.)
