Crush raw Mingfan (Alumen) into pieces the size of a finger and pour them into a silver pot. Heat over charcoal fire. Insert a chopstick into the bottom of the pot and stir until no lumps remain. Then, crush high-quality Yanxiao (Natrii Sulfas) and add it, accounting for approximately three-tenths of the total weight. Next, crush Pengsha (Borisovi Sal) and add it, also accounting for three-tenths. Gradually add the raw Mingfan again. Wait until it completely melts. Following the previous method, add a small amount of Xiao and Pengsha again. Continue layering until all ingredients are added. Stop when the mixture rises and forms a mound like a steamed bun in the pot. Then place over charcoal fire and burn until dry. Cover the pot with a large piece of clean tile. After one shichen (two hours), remove the tile. Grind a small amount of Niuhuang (Bovis Calculus) into powder. Mix with four or five spoons of water, and drip this mixture onto the pill mass. Return the pot to the fire to dry thoroughly. Immediately remove the pot and invert it onto a clean surface lined with paper. Cover with a bowl. Leave for seven days, then store for use. The product should be light and free of hard cracks; if hard cracks are present, it is unsuitable for primary use but may be retained for mixing with honey in other medicines. Regarding heat control: initially use gentle heat, but not too gentle, lest the alum becomes rigid and difficult to melt, resulting in hardness later. Mid-process and late process require strong heat (Wu Huo). If Xiao and Pengsha are added before the alum has melted, they will not dissolve completely, leading to hardness. The pot must be heated through to prevent bursting. Do not reuse pots that have been poured out. This pill must be prepared in large quantities; the longer it ages, the better. It is named Yudán (Jade Pill).
