The brain is the sea of marrow. When the sea of marrow is insufficient, it causes pain in the brain; it is appropriate to treat it with formulas such as Rongzhu Dan (Deer Antler and Pearl Pill). If wind-dispelling herbs are used, death will inevitably occur after a long time. The brain is the mansion of the primordial spirit (Yuan Shen). Even slightly affected by minor pathogenic factors, it immediately shows signs of inability to sustain itself. The *Neijing* calls this "True Headache" (Zhen Tou Tong), where onset in the morning leads to death by evening; even if Rongzhu Dan is administered, it is likely to be of no avail.
For toothache, Pingwei San (Pingwei Powder) mixed with a small amount of Meihua Pian Nao (Borneol) can be ground evenly and applied topically for immediate effect. (This distinguishes clearly between the causes of Stomach Heat and Kidney Deficiency, thereby avoiding omissions or errors. Adding Borneol to Pingwei San only disperses Damp-Heat.)
The *Nan Jing* states: "When the Yin Linking Vessel (Yin Wei Mai) is diseased, one suffers from heart pain." The Yin Linking Vessel runs through all Yin meridians and governs Ying (Nutritive) Qi. Ying Qi belongs to Blood, and Blood is associated with the Heart; therefore, one suffers from heart pain. Jiegu (Zhang Yuansu) stated: "The treatment lies at the intersection of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder and Foot-Jueyin Liver meridians." Zhang Zhongjing taught that for Taiyin Syndrome, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) is used; for Shaoyin Syndrome, Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) is used; for Jueyin Syndrome, Danggui Sini Wuzhuyu Tang (Angelica Sinensis Decoction plus Evodia) is used.
When the Yin Linking Vessel is diseased causing heart pain, if accompanied by cold extremities (Jue Ni), it is a critical condition.
For redness and swelling pain of the eyes, people know how to clear Fire but do not know how to invigorate Blood, so the effect is inadequate. Using only Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), with raw Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chishao (Red Peony Root), added with Jiuzheng Dahuang (Rhubarb steamed with wine), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Mycelium), and Bohe Ye (Mint Leaf) treats it very effectively; this is the method of Dai Fu'an. It is also said: Take Yangzheng Dan (Yangzheng Pill) 20-30 pills with salt water in the morning. It is also said: If eye redness persists without healing and various eye medicines are ineffective, use Suzi Jiangqi Tang (Perilla Seed Descending Qi Decoction) to administer Heiqian Dan (Black Lead Pill) in the morning; before sleep, use Xiaofeng San (Extinguish Wind Powder) to administer Sanhuang Wan (Three Huangs Pill); at noon, use wine to mix and administer Heishen San (Heishen Powder). These medicines not only treat chronic eye redness but also various eye diseases.
Clearing Fire must be combined with invigorating Blood; this is an insight not previously expounded. Without invigorating Blood, Cold remains stagnant and obstructed, from where can Fire descend? When Qi and Blood flow freely, Fire descends along with them.
The classics state: "Bladder transfers heat to the Small Intestine, causing obstruction in bowel movements, and heat rises to cause mouth ulcers (Kou Mi)." It is appropriate to use cooling agents to promote urination, using Wuling San (Wuling Powder) and Daochi San (Guide Out Redness Powder), taken concurrently for miraculous effects. It is also said: "Shaoyang Fire Qi internally generates heat and rises to cause mouth ulcers." In this case, bitter-cold agents should be used.
If neither of these two methods is effective, then Paojiang (Prepared Ginger) or similar substances should be used for counter-assistance (Fan Zuo).
