Treats lung distension (Lung Distension) with cough and rebellious Qi. Restlessness accompanied by wheezing. A floating pulse indicates fluid retention below the heart (Fluid Retention in the Epigastrium). This decoction is indicated.
The formula for Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) is found in the section on Phlegm-Fluids, Cough, and Asthma. Adding two liang of Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) creates this specific formula.
The verse states: Follow the original dosage for Xiao Qing Long Tang. Carefully consider adding two liang of Gypsum. Fluid retention can only be dispersed by warm herbs. To eliminate restlessness, rely on pungent-cool properties.
You Zaijing stated: This is also a syndrome where internal pathogens and external fluids contend. However, the presence of restlessness indicates an accompanying heat pathogen. Specifically adding Gypsum follows the precedent of Da Qing Long Tang (Major Blue Dragon Decoction).
Nevertheless, fluid retention below the heart cannot be resolved or expelled without warm herbs. Therefore, Yue Bi Jia Ban Xia Tang (Yuebi plus Pinellia Decoction) is not used; instead, Xiao Qing Long Jia Shi Gao Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction plus Gypsum) is employed. Cold and warm agents are administered together, eliminating both fluid retention and heat. This approach is particularly rigorous in methodology. Wei Nianting stated: The Master established Gan Cao Gan Jiang Tang (Licorice and Dried Ginger Decoction) for patients with cold lungs leading to dryness and impending atrophy. For patients with hot lungs leading to withering and scorching... [text fragment] ...discarded. This further reveals his heartfelt dedication to saving people without reservation.
(The formula originates from *Qian Jin Fang*, see "Blood Bi and Deficiency Consumption". The verse is from *Chang Sha Fang Ge Kuo*.) Treats lung atrophy (Fei Wei) with excessive saliva and phlegm, and a sensation of warm, viscous fluid in the heart region.
Yuansi's commentary: Excessive saliva and phlegm in lung atrophy, along with a sensation of warm, viscous fluid in the heart region, indicate insufficiency of Heart Yin. Insufficiency of Heart Yin leads to hyperactivity of Heart Yang, which inevitably overacts on Lung Metal, resulting in lung atrophy. Other meanings are discussed in *Shang Han Lun* and will not be repeated here.
(The explanation of the verse is in *Chang Sha Fang Ge Kuo*.)
Use one ingredient, Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), with three dou of water. Boil until reduced by half. Take warm, divided into three doses.
Qian Jin Sheng Jiang Gan Cao Tang (Thousand Gold Ginger and Licorice Decoction) Treats lung atrophy with incessant coughing and expectoration of saliva and phlegm, dry throat, and thirst.
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, five liang). Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, three liang). Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, four liang). Da Zao (Jujube Fruit, fifteen pieces).
These four ingredients are boiled in seven sheng of water to yield three sheng. Take warm, divided into three doses.
The verse states: Lung atrophy with expectoration of saliva and phlegm causes distress due to dry throat. Use four liang of Licorice and five liang of Ginger. Twelve Jujubes and three liang of Ginseng. Tonify Earth to generate fluids, moistening the Lungs and intestines.
Yuansi's commentary: The Middle Jiao corresponds to Earth. Earth generates Metal. As the mother of Metal, Earth is the source of nourishment. In cases of lung atrophy with incessant coughing and expectoration of saliva and phlegm, accompanied by dry throat and thirst, it is due to deficiency of Middle Earth and counterflow of Water Qi, which obstructs fluids from ascending to moisten. The formula uses Sheng Jiang Gan Cao Tang, with Sheng Jiang as the sovereign herb to break Yin and promote Yang, steaming fluids upward. When Earth is robust, it generates Metal and controls Water.
