Treat (after taking the previous medicine) cough and chest fullness stop immediately. If thirst recurs and the Qi rushing upward reappears, it is because Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) and Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) are hot-natured herbs. If the thirst stops instead after taking them, it indicates Zhiyin (Subphrenic Fluid Retention). Patients with Zhiyin (Subphrenic Fluid Retention) typically experience dizziness; those who are dizzy must vomit. For vomiting, add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) to eliminate phlegm-fluids.
Fuling (Poria, 4 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (each 3 liang), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (each half sheng).
The above six herbs, decocted in eight sheng of water, until three sheng remain. Remove the dregs. Take half a sheng warm, three times daily.
Song says: Cough and fullness usually cease (the disease of cough and fullness is removed by Jiangxin [Ganjiang and Xixin]). Thirst adds on, then ceases without drinking due to residual pathogens. (Thirst is caused by the heat of Xinjiang [Xixin and Ganjiang] stirring...)
Male Yuanxi's commentary: The previously mentioned Qi rushing upward is True Yang surging up, requiring Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Fuling (Poria) to attract and guide it back. The Qi rushing mentioned here is stirred by hot herbs, using only...
Treat (after taking the previous medicine) fluid retention gone and vomiting stopped, but the patient has edema. (This is due to Lung Qi not flowing.) Add Xingren (Prunus armeniaca Seed) as the main treatment.
If the patient experiences numbness and bi-syndrome (obstruction), do not add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba). If one violates this and adds Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), it will inevitably cause cold extremities (Jue). The reason is that the patient has Blood deficiency, and Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) disperses Yang Qi, thereby severely damaging Body Fluids.
Fuling (Poria, 4 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3 liang), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Xingren (Prunus armeniaca Seed) (each half sheng).
The above seven herbs, decocted in ten sheng of water, until three sheng remain. Remove the dregs. Take half a sheng warm, three times daily.
Song says: Cough lightens, vomiting stops, swelling adds on. Facial swelling must be known as Lung Qi stagnation. The previous prescription adds half a sheng of Xingren (Prunus armeniaca Seed) for decoction; thus, one herb also follows the rules.
Male Yuanxi's commentary: Form and Qi belong to the Lung. The Lung governs skin and hair and serves as the official of regulation. Body swelling is due to Lung Qi not flowing, condensing and obstructing. Adding...
Treat facial heat resembling drunkenness. This is Stomach Heat rushing upward to fumigate the face. Use the previous formula plus Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) to drain it.
Fuling (Poria, 4 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3 liang), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Xingren (Prunus armeniaca Seed) (each half sheng), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (3 liang).
The above eight herbs, decocted in ten sheng of water, until three sheng remain. Remove the dregs. Take half a sheng warm, three times daily.
Song says: Facial heat like drunkenness is caused by Fire Pathogen affliction. (Stomach Heat rushes upward to fumigate the face.) The previous prescription still adds three liang of Huanglian/Huangqin/Dahuang? (Context implies Dahuang based on text "Zeng san liang Huang"). Driving out fluid retention with a batch of acrid-warm herbs can separately attack heat and promote drainage.
Stagnating externally and...
Xu Zhongke said: The above several formulas all do not remove Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma); even for facial heat like drunkenness, they are not removed. Why? Because these two herbs best relieve fullness and stop cough.
