Re Lao (Heat Consumption) arises from deficiency generating heat, and the heat further exacerbating the deficiency. Its manifestations include mental restlessness and irritability, flushed face, dry and scorched lips, feverish body with shortness of breath, or sores in the mouth and tongue. *Ming Yi Za Zhu* states: In the human body, Yang is often in excess, while Yin is often insufficient. Moreover, those who restrain desires are few, while those who indulge excessively are many. Once Essence and Blood are depleted, Minister Fire (Xiang Huo, the fire of the Mingmen residing in the Liver and Kidneys) must become hyperactive. When Fire is hyperactive, Yin is further consumed, leading to symptoms such as Lao Zhai (chronic consumptive diseases like tuberculosis), cough, hemoptysis, and hematemesis. Therefore, it is advisable to frequently tonify Yin, allowing Yin and Yang to reach equilibrium. Thus, Water can control Fire, achieving the state where Water ascends and Fire descends, resulting in health.
Bu Yin Wan Formula
Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, peeled and stir-fried with wine until brown) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, peeled and stir-fried with wine) Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, roasted with rendered fat until thorough, each 3 liang) Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus) Suo Yang (Cynomorii Herba, roasted with rendered fat until dry) Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried with wine) Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed, each 2 liang) Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, steamed with wine, 5 liang) Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 1 liang) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fried until purple, 3 qian; use 5 qian in winter)
Grind the above into fine powder. Add refined honey and three pig spinal cords, mix evenly, and pound into pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 80-90 pills per dose, administered on an empty stomach with light salt water. In cold months, warm wine may be used for delivery. The original formula by Danxi contains Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Hu Gu (Tigris Ossis), but lacks Gou Qi Zi, Tian Dong, Wu Wei Zi, and Gan Jiang, and is prepared by boiling mutton in wine.
Qiong Yu Gao Treats dry cough due to Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption).
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, 4 jin) Fu Ling (Poria, 12 liang) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 6 liang) Bai Mi (White Honey, 1 jin)
First, decoct Sheng Di Huang to extract the juice and filter out the dregs. Add honey and refine until thick. Then, mix in the fine powders of Ren Shen and Fu Ling, seal in a porcelain jar, and boil in water for half a day. Dissolve in white boiled water before taking.
Note: Patients with Xu Lao often have areas where Qi and Blood are stagnant. Although their physique is emaciated and Qi is deficient, they may experience oppression and fullness under the ribs, preventing them from lying on either side. This is a case of "deficiency containing excess." Achieving efficacy with this formula suggests that it is not merely the power of Ren Shen, Di Huang, Fu Ling, and Honey at work.
Da Zao Wan
Zi He Che (Placenta Humana, one unit, washed clean with rice wash water, steamed thoroughly with a little wine until very soft, mixed with Shan Yao powder, pounded, and dried) Bai Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, roasted with rendered fat, 1 liang) Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix) Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, each 1 liang 2 qian) Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 2 liang 5 qian) In summer, add Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 7 qian)
Except for Shu Di Huang which is pounded separately, grind the rest into fine powder. Use wine-boiled rice paste to bind, mix with pounded Shu Di Huang to form a paste, and make into pills the size of tung tree seeds, or honey pills. Take 80-90 pills per dose, on an empty stomach or before bed, with salt water. In winter, use wine. For women, remove Gui Ban and add Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 liang).

In winter, add Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, half a liang, stir-fried until scorched).
Grind all into fine powder. Steam three pig spinal cords until cooked, add refined honey, mix and pound into pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 80 pills per dose, on an empty stomach with light salt water.
