The syndrome of Spleen Lao (Spleen Deficiency Consumption) manifests as indigestion, epigastric and abdominal fullness and distension, vomiting with acid regurgitation, and a sallow complexion. In severe cases, there is constant pain in the heart and abdomen, loose stools, cold extremities, soreness and pain in the bone joints, and gradual emaciation. This is caused by the long-term accumulation of Wind-Cold Qi in the Spleen and Stomach, and is also known as Cold Lao. The principal formula is Muxiang Zhudu Wan (Musk and Pig Stomach Pill).
Formula for Muxiang Zhudu Wan:
Muxiang (Costus Root), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root Lateralis), Yuliren (Dried Seed of Prunus tomentosa), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (each 1 liang); Roudoukou (Nutmeg) (1 liang); Shuai (Processed Mugwort Leaf), Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis or Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (each 2 liang); Nongpo (Magnolia Bark) (stir-fried with ginger water, 3 liang); Zhongru Fen (Stalactitum), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig) (each 5 qian).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Take one male pig stomach, remove the fat membrane, cut it finely, place it in 3 sheng of good rice vinegar, boil until soft, grind finely, mix with the powder, knead into pills the size of wutong seeds. Take on an empty stomach.
Prescription from *Qianjin Fang* for treating deficiency and tonifying Lao:
Yangdu (Sheep Stomach) (one piece, sliced), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (1 sheng).
Take the above two ingredients, add 2 dou of water, boil to obtain 6 sheng of liquid. Take 2 sheng per dose, three times daily.
Another prescription:
Zhudu (Pig Stomach) (one piece), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (5 liang), Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) (each 2.5 liang), Congbai (Scallion White) (7 liang), Bai Liang Mi (White Millet) (0.5 sheng).
Chop the above six ingredients, ensure they are well combined, place them inside the stomach along with the millet, sew tightly to prevent leakage. Add 4.5 dou of water, simmer slowly until soft. Eat on an empty stomach; this is highly effective. It can be accompanied by a small amount of rice.
Baizhu Tang (Atractylodes Decoction) from *Jisheng Fang*: Treats Spleen Lao with deficiency-cold, vomiting, inability to eat, abdominal pain with diarrhea, chest fullness, and frequent belching.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Caoguo (Black Cardamom Fruit), Roudoukou (Nutmeg) (wrapped in flour and baked until cooked), Nongpo (Magnolia Bark), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Muxiang (Costus Root), Maiya (Sprouted Hordeum Vulgare Fructus) (each 1 liang).
Take 4 qian per dose, with 1 zhan of water, 5 slices of ginger, and 1 jujube. Decoct and take at any time.
The syndrome of Wind Lao (Wind Consumption) manifests as steaming heat in muscles and bones, alternating chills and fever, cough with phlegm, night sweats, yellow and thin complexion with brittle hair, bad breath, or progression to infantile malnutrition diarrhea. This arises from Wind pathogen stagnation in the meridians, leading to blood stasis and depression. The disease often affects the Liver and is also known as Liver Lao.
Qinjiao Biejia San (Gentian and Turtle Shell Powder) from *Baojian*:
Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis or Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum) (1 liang, stir-fried with vinegar), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Digupi (Lycium Cortex), Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) (each 0.5 liang).
Grind into coarse powder. Take 0.5 liang per dose, with 1 zhan of water, add 1 Chinese plum (Wumei) and 5 leaves of Qinghao (Artemisia Annua Herba). Simmer until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm before sleep or on an empty stomach. Suitable for those with hard stools. For those with loose stools, indicating Qi and Blood deficiency, use Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). *Yuanzhu* states: Individuals with weak constitutions are most susceptible to pathogenic factors. One should first harmonize the interior, inducing slight sweating or mild purgation, treating according to their nature, and then regulate. If physicians do not realize that pathogens remain in the body and proceed directly to tonification, the pathogens will enter the meridians aided by the tonic, often leading to death. This must be understood.
Chaihu Yinzi (Bupleurum Drink) (from Taiwu):
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root), Dahuang (Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) (each 0.5 liang).
Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with water and ginger, and take warm.
Maijian San (Wheat Decoction Powder): Treats young men and women with bone-steaming, yellow and thin appearance, night sweats, muscular heat, bad breath, and women with Blood-Wind attacking the limbs. (See *Tianyuan Wan* in *Liangfang*).
Tianyuan Wan (Softshell Turtle Pill): Highly effective for bone-steaming consumption cough.
Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) (each 1 liang), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) (0.5 liang).
Boil two softshell turtles together until cooked. Take the meat and broth. Dry the herbs, grind into powder. Boil the turtle shell and bones in 1 zhan of water. Mix the liquid with the powder to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 20-30 pills per dose. Send down with Huangqi Liuyi Tang (Astragalus Six-to-One Decoction) on an empty stomach. After recovery, continue taking Huangqi Liuyi Tang for conditioning.
Prescription from *Guangji Fang* for treating bone-steaming lung heat, where every evening brings aversion to cold and high fever, slightly red cheeks, inability to eat, and gradual emaciation:
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) (3 liang, sliced), Congbai (Scallion White) (one handful), Xiangchi (Prepared Soybean Paste) (2 liang), Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root) (5 qian), Tongzi Xiaobian (Child's Urine) (2 sheng).
Soak the Shengdihuang and other ingredients in the child's urine overnight. At dawn, boil twice, strain, clarify, and obtain 1.2 sheng of liquid. Divide into two warm doses. Wait the time it takes for a person to walk 7-8 li between doses. Take one course; stop when cured.
Quanbie Wan (Complete Turtle Pill) from *Zhizhi Fang*: Same indications as Tianyuan Wan in *Liangfang*.
Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) (soaked, peeled, each 3 liang), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) (2 liang), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (1 liang), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Ming E'jiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin).
Coarsely chop the ingredients, place in a thick porcelain vessel. Take one medium-sized live softshell turtle, slaughter alive, remove the head. Combine turtle meat, blood, and herbs. Soak in 5 sheng of strong wine for one night. Use the medicinal wine juice to mix rice flour into a paste, form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 70 pills per dose, with rice drink.
If residual heat from Shanghan (Cold Damage) remains unresolved, or due to improper care, leading to chronic cough, alternating chills and fever, hematemesis, and epistaxis lasting a long time, resembling Lao Zhai (Consumption Tuberculosis). This is due to Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and pathogenic factors lingering in the body. Generally, use herbs that nourish Qi and generate Blood, combined with Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), Qinghao (Artemisia Annua Herba), Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis or Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum), or Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), etc., modified according to symptoms. There is no case that does not heal. Do not use purely tonifying agents, nor mistakenly identify it as deficiency damage or consumptive weakness, lightly using warming tonics such as Duzhong (Eucommia Bark), Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), or Shanzhuyu (Cornus Officinalis Fruit).
