Danxi Bailuo Shell Pill (Cocculus Pill of Danxi)
Haliotidis Concha (Bai Luoke, White Abalone Shell) [calcined], one tael; Talcum (Huashi), one tael; Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), one tael; Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhizi), one tael; Monascus Rice (Hongqu) [stir-fried], one tael; Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) [soaked in urine of a young boy], one tael; Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Nanxing) [processed], one tael.
Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi), half tael; Aurantii Fructus (Zhiqiao) [stir-fried with bran until yellow], half tael; Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), half tael; Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), half tael; Amomi Fructus (Sharen), half tael each. Persicam Semen (Taoren) [stir-fried, skin and tip removed], thirty grains.
Grind the above into powder. In spring, add Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong); in summer, add Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian); in autumn, add Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu). Use ginger juice to moisten steamed wheat cake dough to form pills, sized like mung beans. Take fifty pills per dose.
Haige Pill (by Danxi) Treats heart pain caused by phlegm-fluid retention.
Concha Meretricis et Cyclinae (Haige) [burned to ash, ground extremely fine, left for several days to dissipate fire toxicity before use]; Trichosanthis Semen (Gualouren) [with rind, ground together].
Mix Haige powder into Gualou, adjust moisture content appropriately to form pills. Take fifty pills per dose.
Jiawei Erchen Decoction Modified (Modified Two-Chen Decoction) Treats stomach epigastric pain due to phlegm-food accumulation, or distension and stuffiness.
Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi); Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia); Poria (Fuling); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhigancao); Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi); Coptidis Rhizoma (Chuanlian); Talcum (Huashi); Akebiae Caulis (Mutong); Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha); Puerariae Radix (Gange).
This syndrome involves damp-phlegm stagnating and generating heat in the middle jiao, causing qi obstruction and blockage. Using Erchen Decoction plus Huanglian, Zhishi, and Shanzha clears and purges the middle palace (spleen and stomach). The brilliance lies in Gange lifting and guiding clear qi upward, while Huashi and Mutong eliminate turbid qi downward. With clear qi ascending and turbid qi descending, pain and distension are naturally resolved.
(Xin Ding) Wuzhuyu Decoction (Newly Formulated Wuzhuyu Soup) Treats epigastric pain with inability to eat; vomiting occurs upon eating; pulse is wiry.
Ginseng Radix (Renshen), one qian; Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) [three fen, processed and rinsed to remove pungency]; Coptidis Rhizoma (Chuanlian), six fen; Poria (Fuling), two qian; Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), one and a half qian; Chaenomelis Fructus (Mu Gua from Xuanzhou), seven fen.
Take as one dose. Decoct with water and fresh ginger.
(Xin Ding) Guiling Decoction (Newly Formulated Guiling Soup)
Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui), one qian; Poria (Fuling), three qian; Ginseng Radix (Renshen), one qian; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), five fen; Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao), one qian; Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang), five fen.
Take as one dose. Decoct with water and take on an empty stomach.
Commentary: Ancient methods involved mixing raw Chinese chive juice with Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) to form pills, taken on an empty stomach with Foeniculum Vulgare (Huixiang) decoction. This likely aims to drain fluid retention and strengthen earth (spleen/stomach) qi. I believe that for white stagnation, Renshen is superior for benefiting stomach qi; the acridity of Chinese chive juice is inferior to Shengjiang in dispersing rebellious qi; moreover, Polyporus (Zhu Ling) and Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie) may overly damage kidney qi, whereas Shaoyao is better at restraining and guiding water downward.
