The *Jingui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet) states: When Hongjiaojiao (a disease characterized by swelling and numbness of the lower legs) pathogenic factors ascend to the lower abdomen, causing insensibility in that area, Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill) should be used. This is because dampness pathogenic factors invade from below and move upward; if Kidney Qi is deficient and Yang energy is weak, failing to resist the invasion, the pathogen gradually enters the lower abdomen, leading to Bi obstruction (blockage of meridians and collaterals) and resulting in insensibility. Shenqi Wan regulates Kidney Qi; once Kidney Qi is harmonized, the pathogenic factors naturally descend, and the insensibility resolves.
Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill)
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Dihuang, 8 liang)
Cornus Officinalis Fruit (Rougui/Shanyuzhuyu, 4 liang)
Chinese Yam (Shanyao, 4 liang)
Poria (Fuling, 3 liang)
Alisma Rhizome (Zexie, 3 liang)
Moutan Cortex (Danpi, 3 liang)
Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fu Zi, 1 liang)
Cinnamon Twig (Rougui, 1 liang)
Grind the above eight ingredients into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 3 qian per dose, administered on an empty stomach with light salt water decoction.
Wuyu Wan (Evodia Pill) from *Sanyin Fang* (Treatise on the Causes and Manifestations of All Diseases) treats Hongjiaojiao where pathogenic factors enter the abdomen, causing abdominal insensibility and severe asthma approaching death.
Evodiae Fructus (Wuyu, washed seven times with hot water)
Chaenomelis Fructus (Mu Gua, deseeded, sliced, sun-dried, equal proportion to Evodiae Fructus)
Grind into powder, bind with wine paste to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 50 to 100 pills per dose, washed down with wine. Alternatively, steam Chaenomelis Fructus until soft, grind into paste for pill formation, which is particularly effective.
The condition known as "Hongjiaojiao Shangqi" (Ascending Qi in Hongjiaojiao) occurs because wind-toxicity and dampness follow the meridians upward into the Lung. The Lung governs Qi and respiration; when pathogenic factors invade, the airway becomes tight, and the ascending and descending mechanisms are obstructed, causing upper asthma and fullness. In severe cases, the patient cannot lie flat.
Sangbaipi Tang (Mulberry Bark Decoction)
Mori Cortex (Sangbaipi, processed with heat, 2 liang)

Grind together into powder. Decoct in water, add Ginger and Jujube soup, then add 3 qian of the powder. Boil again and take warm. It should induce one or two bowel movements, reducing swelling and descending rebellious Qi to achieve recovery. Take once every three to five days. Another version excludes Xingren.

The syndrome of "Hongjiaojiao Chongxin" (Hongjiaojiao Rushing to the Heart) manifests as chest and heart vexation and oppression, vomiting, and rapid breathing. In severe cases, the pulse may disappear, indicating a critical state nearing death. This is because wind-damp toxicity originates in the feet; if untreated for a long time, it rushes upward to the Heart and Stomach regions, constituting a most urgent condition. Methods to direct Qi downward, eliminate dampness, and drain toxicity must be employed without delay.
Wuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction)
Evodiae Fructus (Wuyu, 0.5 liang)
Chaenomelis Fructus (Mu Gua, 1 liang)
Areca Seed (Binglang, 2 liang, chicken-heart shape preferred)
Decoct 5 qian of herbs in water, adding a handful of Bamboo Leaves. Stop when bowel movement is unobstructed. Another method: coarsely crush the herbs, take 8 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water and 5 slices of fresh ginger, decoct to 1 zhan, strain, and take warm at any time.

Liu Zongyuan of the Tang Dynasty suffered from Hongjiaojiao. At midnight, his condition suddenly worsened with blockage; a mass like a large stone formed in his left hypochondrium. He was near death, unconscious and blocked for three days, while his family wept bitterly. Zheng Xunmei from Yingyang transmitted this prescription. After taking it, within half a day, his Qi flowed freely, and he recovered immediately.
