1. Diseases caused by wind typically manifest as hemiplegia; if only the arm is unable to move, this is classified as Bi syndrome (obstruction syndrome). The pulse is faint and rapid, which is due to wind-stroke (Zhongfeng).
2. At the Cun Kou (radial artery) position, the pulse is floating and tight. A tight pulse indicates cold, while a floating pulse indicates deficiency. Cold and deficiency interact, placing the pathogenic factor in the skin. Floating indicates blood deficiency, with collateral vessels empty; evil pathogens cannot be expelled, affecting either the left or right side. The side affected by the pathogen becomes relaxed, while the healthy side becomes tense; the healthy qi pulls the pathogen, resulting in deviation of the mouth and eyes and inability to move freely. If the pathogen is in the collaterals, there is numbness of the skin and muscles; if in the meridians, the body feels heavy and difficult to lift; if entering the Fu organs, consciousness is lost and one does not recognize people; if entering the Zang organs, the tongue becomes stiff making speech difficult, and saliva dribbles from the mouth.
Hou Shi Hei San (Dr. Hou's Black Powder): Treats severe wind disease, characterized by heaviness and discomfort in the four limbs, and a sensation of insufficient warmth in the heart. (Wai Tai Mi Yao treats wind epilepsy.)
Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos, 40 fen), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 10 fen), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 fen), Mu Li (Ostreae Concha, 3 fen), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 8 fen), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 10 fen), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen), Fan Shi (Alumen, 3 fen), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 5 fen), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 fen), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 3 fen), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 3 fen), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 3 fen).
The above fourteen ingredients are pounded into a powder. Take one fang cun bi (a square-inch measure) with wine, once daily. For the first twenty days, take it mixed with warm wine. Avoid all fish, meat, and garlic. Prefer cold food for sixty days; this prevents the medicine from descending immediately, allowing it to accumulate in the abdomen. Hot food would cause immediate digestion, whereas cold food aids the medicinal power.
3. At the Cun Kou position, the pulse is slow and moderate. A slow pulse indicates cold, while a moderate pulse indicates deficiency. A moderate Ying Qi (nutritive qi) indicates loss of blood, while a moderate Wei Qi (defensive qi) indicates wind-stroke. If the pathogen strikes the meridians, the body itches and urticaria (wind wheals) appear. If Heart Qi is deficient and the pathogen enters inward, there is chest fullness and shortness of breath.
Feng Yin Tang (Wind-Driving Decoction): Clears heat and treats paralysis and epilepsy.
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi), each 4 liang; Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), 3 liang; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Mu Li (Ostreae Concha), each 2 liang; Han Shui Shi (Halloysitum Rubrum), Hua Shi (Talcum), Chi Shi Zhi (Halloysitum Rubrum), Bai Shi Zhi (Halloysitum Album), Zi Yi Ying (Fluorite), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), each 6 liang.
The above twelve ingredients are pounded and coarsely sifted, stored in a leather bag. Take three finger-pinches, boil in three sheng of well water for three boils, and take one sheng warm. (Treats adult wind-strike symptoms, pediatric convulsive epilepsy occurring dozens of times daily, refractory cases, clearing heat. Chao Yuan-fang states: Hong Jiao [podagra] should use Feng Yin Tang.)
Fang Ji Di Huang Tang (Stephania and Rehmannia Decoction): Treats symptoms resembling mania, such as aimless walking, continuous solitary speech, without chills or fever, with a floating pulse.
Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 1 fen), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 3 fen), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 3 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 fen).
The above four ingredients are soaked in one cup of wine overnight, then strained to extract the juice. Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, 2 jin) is chopped and steamed until soft like rice in a steamer. Collect the juice in a copper vessel, then squeeze out more juice from the Di Huang. Mix the juices and divide into two doses for administration.
Tou Feng Mo San (Head Wind Massage Powder) Formula
Da Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 piece, prepared), Yan (Sal, equal parts).
The above two ingredients are powdered. After washing the head, apply one fang cun bi to the affected area and massage to allow the medicinal force to penetrate.
4. At the Cun Kou position, the pulse is deep and weak. Deep indicates bone issues, weak indicates tendon issues; deep corresponds to the Kidney, weak corresponds to the Liver. Sweating and then entering water damages the Heart. This leads to Li Jie disease (periarticular rheumatism) with yellow sweat, hence called Li Jie.
5. At the Fu Yang position, the pulse is floating and slippery. Slippery indicates abundant grain qi, floating indicates spontaneous sweating.
6. At the Shao Yin position, the pulse is floating and weak. Weak indicates blood insufficiency, floating indicates wind. Wind and blood contend, causing pain that feels like pulling or tearing.
7. In obese individuals, the pulse is choppy and small, accompanied by shortness of breath and spontaneous sweating. Li Jie pain prevents flexion and extension. This is caused by sweating after drinking alcohol and being exposed to wind.
8. Pain in all joints, emaciation of the body, swelling of the feet as if detached, dizziness, shortness of breath, and nausea wanting to vomit are treated with Gui Zhi Shao Yao Zhi Mu Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Peony, and Anemarrhena Decoction).
Gui Zhi Shao Yao Zhi Mu Tang Formula
Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 4 liang), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, 3 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, 2 liang), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 5 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 liang), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 4 liang), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 4 liang), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 2 liang, prepared).
The above nine ingredients are boiled in seven sheng of water to yield two sheng. Take seven he warm, three times daily.
9. Sour taste injures the tendons; tendon injury causes flaccidity, named Xie (leakage). Salty taste injures the bones; bone injury causes atrophy, named Ku (withered). When Ku and Xie combine, it is named Duan Xie (severance and leakage). Ying Qi circulation is blocked, Wei Qi cannot flow independently, both Ying and Wei become deficient, the San Jiao (Triple Burner) loses control, the four extremities are severed, and the body becomes emaciated. Only the feet swell, with yellow sweat and cold calves. If fever occurs, it becomes Li Jie disease.
10. For Li Jie disease with inability to flex and extend and pain, Wu Tou Tang (Aconite Decoction) is indicated.
Wu Tou Tang Formula: Treats Hong Jiao (podagra) pain, preventing flexion and extension.
Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), each 3 liang; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried); Chuan Wu (Aconiti Radix, 5 pieces, chopped, boiled with two sheng of honey to yield one sheng, then remove the Wu Tou).
Chop the first four ingredients. Boil in three sheng of water to yield one sheng. Strain and add to the honey decoction. Simmer further. Take seven he. If ineffective, consume the remainder.
Fan Shi Tang (Alumen Decoction): Treats Hong Jiao rushing to the heart.
Fan Shi (Alumen, 2 liang).
Boil the single ingredient in fifteen sheng of sour rice wash for three to five boils. Soak the feet.
Supplementary Formulas:
Gu Jin Lu Yan Xu Ming Tang (Continuing Life Decoction from Ancient and Modern Verified Prescriptions): Treats wind-stroke fei (paralysis), where the body cannot self-control, speech is impaired, consciousness is clouded with unknown pain locations, or stiffness prevents turning.
