Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), and bitter herbs with exterior-releasing properties. Apply Bajiao You (Musa Sapientis Oil) to the affected area.
Xionghuang (Realgar) and Huangdan (Minium), applied externally together.
A child who frequently ate zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) developed abdominal pain. The condition was cured after administering a powder made of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Baijiu Yao (White Wine Medicament), mixed and taken orally.
Pathogenic fire causes great harm, changes rapidly, manifests prominently, and can lead to sudden death. Why? Because fire burns and scorches, flies and raves, consumes and erodes all things, and cannot be resisted. It travels through both deficiency and excess pathways: one is Jun Huo (Monarch Fire), akin to human fire; the other is Xiang Huo (Ministerial Fire), akin to dragon fire. The nature of fire does not move recklessly; if it does not deviate from the constant Dao, abides by its position, obeys orders, and operates to create and sustain life, this is the mechanism of survival. Humans exist within the intersection of Qi, moving more than resting. How can one avoid reckless movement? Therefore, all movements belong to fire. If Long Huo (Dragon Fire) moves recklessly, Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is injured, and the two are incompatible. If one side prevails excessively, the disease shifts to other meridians, which is no minor matter. At the extreme of movement, illness leads to death. The Classic states that "one water cannot overcome two fires," referring to fire arising from natural creation. Besides Jun Huo and Xiang Huo, there is also fire of Jueyin (Jueyin Meridian) and the Zang-Fu organs, rooted in the Five Emotions (Wu Zhi), stimulated by Six Desires and Seven Emotions, causing fire to arise spontaneously. Great anger causes fire to arise in the Liver; drunkenness and overeating cause fire to arise in the Stomach; sexual exhaustion causes fire to arise in the Kidney; sorrow affecting the interior causes fire to arise in the Lung. The Heart is the Monarch; if it burns itself, death ensues. Danxi further elucidated: Fire originates from the diseases of the Five Zang organs. He stated: All wind syndromes with tremors and vertigo belong to the movement of Liver Fire; all pain and sores/ulcers belong to the function of Heart Fire; all Qi stagnation and depression belong to the rising of Lung Fire; all dampness, swelling, and fullness belong to the predominance of Spleen Fire. The Classic's statement that "one water cannot overcome five fires" refers to fire arising from human activity. Furthermore, examining the Nineteen Pathogenesis Mechanisms in the *Nei Jing*, five are attributed to fire: all heat syndromes with mental confusion belong to fire; all convulsions and spasms, as if losing spiritual control, belong to fire; all rebellious Qi ascending belong to fire; all restlessness, agitation, mania, and wild behavior belong to fire; all conditions with edema on the dorsum of the foot, pain, soreness, fright, and alarm belong to fire. Liu Hejian expanded on the pathogenic effects of fire, deeply aligning with the *Nei Jing*. He stated: Panting, vomiting, acid regurgitation, acute diarrhea with tenesmus, muscle cramps, turbid urine, abdominal distension sounding like a drum upon percussion, carbuncles, ulcers, rashes, goiter, scrofula, vomiting and diarrhea with cholera-like symptoms, mental confusion and depression, swelling, nasal congestion, epistaxis, hematemesis, hematochezia, stranguria, retention of urine, fever, aversion to cold, shivering, fright, confusion, crying and laughing, delirium, and bloody discharges are all manifestations of Shaoyang Jun Huo (Shaoyang Monarch Fire), caused by the Qi of the True Heart and Small Intestine. If there is sudden mental confusion and aphasia, dizziness, restlessness, agitation, mania, wild behavior, cursing, fright, edema on the dorsum of the foot, pain and soreness, rebellious Qi ascending, spasms and shivering as if losing spiritual control, sneezing and vomiting, sores and ulcers, hoarseness, tinnitus, deafness, forceful vomiting, inability to eat, blurred vision, acute diarrhea, sudden illness, or sudden death, these are all heat syndromes of Shaoyang Xiang Huo (Shaoyang Ministerial Fire), caused by the Qi of the Pericardium and Sanjiao (Triple Burner). These are all variations of fire manifesting in various diseases. Pulse characteristics are floating and large when deficient, and surging and rapid when excess. The main actions of medicines depend on their specific affiliations. Jun Huo is Heart Fire; it can be subdued by dampness, extinguished by water, and directly reduced; only herbs like Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) can control it. Xiang Huo is Dragon Fire; it cannot be reduced by dampness but must be subdued according to its nature; only herbs like Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) can descend it. Alas! Are methods of purging fire limited to this? Deficiency and excess present in many forms and must be carefully examined. Treating according to Zang organ Qi: Huanglian purges Heart Fire; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) purges Lung Fire; Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) purges Spleen Fire; Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) purges Liver Fire; Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) purges Kidney Fire. These are all bitter-cold flavors capable of purging excessive fire. However, if dietary irregularities and fatigue injure Yuan Qi internally, and fire opposes righteousness, this is a Yang-deficiency disease. It should be treated with sweet-warm formulas, such as Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). If Yin is weak and Yang is strong, with Xiang Huo blazing and invading Yin positions, slowly consuming and simmering, this is a fire-induced deficiency disease; it should be treated with sweet-cold formulas to descend it, such as Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix). If Heart Fire is extremely hyperactive with internal stagnant heat and excess, this is a Yang-excess disease; it should be treated with salty-cold formulas to reduce it, such as Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas). If Kidney Water is injured and Yin fails to hold fast, resulting in rootless fire, this is a deficiency disease; it should be treated with formulas that strengthen Water to control it, such as Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix). If the Fire of the Gate of Vitality (Mingmen) in the right Kidney is declined, this is a Yang-collapse disease; it should be treated with warm-hot formulas to assist it, such as Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma). If Stomach deficiency leads to excessive consumption of cold foods, suppressing Yang Qi in the Spleen Earth, this is a Fire-stagnation disease; it should be treated with ascending-dispersing formulas to vent it, such as Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Genge (Puerariae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix). Without understanding these categories, how can one seek the causes of fire diseases and have a basis for treatment? Therefore, I have collected and summarized theories from various meridians, briefly preparing prescriptions for use, to avoid the disaster of reinforcing excess and depleting deficiency.
