Master Xiang said: What emerges is the Jing (Well) point; Jing resembles the spring of water. What trickles is the Ying (Spring) point; Ying resembles the pond of water. What pours into is the Shu (Stream) point; Shu resembles the pit of water. What flows along is the Jing (River) point; Jing resembles the stream of water. What enters is the He (Sea) point; He resembles the convergence of water. All these take their meaning from water imagery.
It is also said: In Spring, puncture the Jing points; Jing corresponds to the East and Spring, when all things begin to grow, hence called Jing. In Winter, puncture the He points; He corresponds to the North and Winter, when Yang Qi enters the storage (Zang organs), hence called He. Speaking of beginning and end, Ying, Shu, and Jing are included within them. It is also said: The muscles around the Jing points are shallow; to drain a Jing point, one should drain its Ying point. Master Hua said: To tonify a Jing point, one should tonify its He point.
Qibo said: In Spring, puncturing Jing points addresses pathogenic factors in the Liver. In Summer, puncturing Ying points addresses pathogenic factors in the Heart. In Late Summer, puncturing Shu points addresses pathogenic factors in the Spleen. In Autumn, puncturing Jing points addresses pathogenic factors in the Lung. In Winter, puncturing He points addresses pathogenic factors in the Kidney; this is the principle. The Yellow Emperor asked: How do we know that the Five Zang organs are associated with the Four Seasons? Qibo replied: For each disease of the Five Zang organs, there are five manifestations. For example, in Liver disease: green complexion indicates the Liver; fishy odor indicates the Liver; preference for sour taste indicates the Liver; tendency to shout indicates the Liver; tendency to weep indicates the Liver. There are many such pathological images, which cannot be fully enumerated. The four other Zang organs have similar manifestations, all associated with the Four Seasons. The subtlety of acupuncture lies in the finest details.
Chen of Siming said: In Spring, Qi resides in the hair; in Summer, Qi resides in the skin; in Autumn, Qi resides in the muscle layers; in Winter, Qi resides in the bone marrow. This is the correspondence of depth.
