Qibo said: When a pregnant woman reaches the ninth month of pregnancy and loses her voice, it is called "interruption of the collateral vessels of the uterus" (Bao's Luo Mai). No treatment is required; she will recover naturally after delivery in the tenth month.
If a patient suffers from fullness under the hypochondrium and rebellious Qi for two or three years without resolution, it is called "Xi Ji" (Breath Accumulation). Moxibustion and acupuncture are contraindicated; treatment should consist of Daoyin (guided breathing and movement) combined with herbal medicine.
If a patient has swelling in the thighs and shins, along with pain around the umbilicus, it is called "Fu Liang" (Hidden Beam). This condition must not be disturbed ("disturbance" refers to using potent drugs and striking the abdomen); disturbing it will lead to difficulty and obstruction in urination.
If a patient's Chi pulse (radial artery at the wrist, representing Kidney/Yin) is extremely rapid, accompanied by visible tendon tension and spasm, it is called "Zhen Jin" (Rash Tendons). Such patients will necessarily have abdominal tightness; if white or black complexion appears, the disease is severe.
If a patient suffers from headache persisting for several years without relief, it is called "Jue Ni" (Rebellious Counterflow). This is caused by severe Cold pathogen penetrating inward to the bone marrow. Since marrow governs the brain, rebellious Qi in the brain causes this pathology.
A person whose mouth tastes sweet is diagnosed with "Pi Dan" (Spleen Heat/Dan Syndrome) (Dan refers to heat). This occurs because frequent consumption of sweet, delicious, and fatty foods leads to internal heat from fat and central fullness from sweetness. Consequently, Qi overflows upward, transforming into Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome). Treatment involves using Lan Cao (Eupatorium fortunei/Ping Pei Lan) to eliminate stale Qi.
A person whose mouth tastes bitter is diagnosed with "Dan Dan" (Gallbladder Heat/Dan Syndrome). Treatment involves stimulating the Front-Mu point and Back-Shu point of the Gallbladder.
A patient with Lin syndrome (strangury/difficult urination) who urinates dozens of times a day exhibits deficiency. If the body is hot as charcoal, the neck and chest feel rigid like a barrier, the Renying pulse (carotid artery) is restless and vigorous, and there is wheezing with rebellious Qi, these indicate excess. If the Taiyin pulse is minute like a hair, this indicates deficiency. With five excess signs and two deficiency signs, it is called Jue (Counterflow), which is a fatal and untreatable condition.
An infant born with epilepsy is called "Tai Xian" (Fetal Epilepsy), caused by fright experienced by the fetus in the womb.
A patient presents with edema resembling water retention, a large and tight pulse, no body pain, normal body shape (not emaciated), inability to eat, and poor appetite. This is called "Ren Feng" (Kidney Wind). If a Ren Feng patient cannot eat, is prone to fright, and subsequently experiences collapse of Heart Qi, death ensues.
A patient prone to anger and mania is called "Yang Jue" (Yang Counterflow). This results from Yang Qi being suddenly obstructed and unable to resolve freely, leading to irritability. Treatment involves restricting food intake, which will cure the condition. The patient should drink Sheng Tie Luo (Ferri Oxidum/Iron rust solution). Sheng Tie Luo has the effect of rapidly descending Qi.
