The method for ascending Qi: Apply tonification three times, then perform seven lifting-and-thrusting movements at the needle tip. If the goal is to promote the circulation of Qi and Blood, add rubbing (Xun) techniques; this will eliminate numbness and pain without worry.
The method for descending Qi: Apply sedation four times, then press seven times. Through rubbing (Xun), the Qi descends; pain and numbness resolve naturally following the same principle as above, allowing Ying-Wei Qi and the Yuan Qi of the Chong vessel to return to peace.
If ascending Qi fails to move upward: Rotate the needle counter-clockwise three times, followed by seven cycles of rubbing (Xun) combined with urgent flicking (Tan). Add lifting and grasping techniques specifically to guide Qi upward; Qi will circulate freely, and the disease will subside.
If descending Qi fails to move downward: Rotate the needle clockwise three times, followed by seven cycles of rubbing (Xun) without flicking. Add seven presses and seven grasping motions, along with trembling presses three times; Qi will descend and stabilize.
To raise Yang Qi: Even if rubbing (Cuo) is performed multiple times, it must be combined with rubbing (Xun) techniques repeatedly. Urgent lifting three times requires tonification; adding extension and lifting allows Yang Qi to intersect and flow.
To raise Yin Qi: Pressing must be combined with extension. Lifting connected with rubbing and urgent pressing should be used. Additionally, make the needle tip tremble frequently downwards; rubbing and sedation will cause the illness to flee rapidly.
For deficiency patterns, ten cycles of rubbing (Xun) may fail to elicit Qi ("buy" implies obtaining/eliciting). After inserting the needle three cun, twist seven times and rub seven times; then twist three times and rub seven times. Otherwise, the patient is difficult to treat and may perish.
For excess patterns, excessive rubbing is not needed, but continuous rubbing is required. Immediately apply tonification three times so Qi remains at the needle. If tightness occurs immediately upon tonification, it indicates pathogenic Qi; three tonifications and seven rubs address fluid retention (Yin).
After seven tonifications and circular operations, Qi often appears deficient. Use very light hands to take a light lift. One light lift with tonification, followed by frequent pressing and trembling, promotes Qi movement.
Immediately tonify seven times and perform seven circular operations. To obtain Correct Qi (Zheng Qi), extension and lifting are required. If tightness occurs immediately upon tonification, it is pathogenic Qi; use scraping, sedation, and flicking to remove it.
If after ten tonifications and ten rubs Qi still does not arrive, press without rubbing to open the Qi mechanism. For people aged thirty to forty, lifting and pressing are necessary; for those over fifty, needle manipulation must be carefully controlled regarding pressing. Men with bleeding symptoms require less pressing; women regulating Yin channels require more pressing and rubbing. Remember that pressing for deficiency is truly miraculous, returning ascending Qi and Yang to their proper state.
If the needle feels tight but no pressing is applied, Qi becomes pathogenic. If the needle feels loose before withdrawal, apply more pressing. To elicit Qi, add slight trembling. Ten presses without contradiction harmonize Yin and Yang.
Deficient patients should not use deficient flicking methods. If deficient flicking is used, Yin Qi becomes loose. Flicking is ineffective for various diseases in deficiency patterns; urgent pressing and trembling allow Qi to flow freely.
In excess patterns with stagnant Qi, use seven flicks. Combine scraping, rubbing, and urgent flicking. Two urgent flicks with tonification elicit Qi, adjusting the ascent and descent of Qi to restore balance.
Deficient patients with heat do not need rubbing; excessive rubbing increases heat and disharmony. Cold patients should rub dozens of times, connecting extraction with urgent pressing and extensive rubbing. Deficient patients with diarrhea have specific pressing methods; cold patients use rubbing to generate warmth. Considering these two methods for cold and heat conditions ensures correct regulation of Qi ascent and descent.
