Li Dongyuan stated: The *Neijing* (Classic of Internal Medicine) records: "For low back pain accompanied by coldness in the upper body and inability to look back, select points on the Foot-Taiyang and Foot-Yangming meridians; for low back pain accompanied by heat in the upper body, select points on the Foot-Jueyin meridian; for stiffness preventing flexion and extension, it belongs to the Shaoyang pathology." This is because the Three Yang Meridians of the Foot run from the head to the foot, while the Three Yin Meridians of the Foot run from the foot into the abdomen. Pain can occur wherever these meridians pass. In treatment, one must carefully determine which meridian's domain is affected, needle along the corresponding acupoints, and prescribe medication based on the differentiation of cold or heat. For example, low back pain caused by the Foot-Taiyang meridian, which radiates to the neck, spine, and buttocks with a sensation of heaviness, should be treated by needling Weizhong (BL40) to bleed the Foot-Taiyang and Foot-Shaoyang meridians. Other cases should follow this pattern. Liu Shi noted that Wang Bing’s commentary mentioning moxibustion in the *Neijing* is suspected to be an error. Suitable acupoints for moxibustion include Shenshu (BL23) and Yaoshu (DU19). The *Zhenjiu Baojian* (Precious Mirror of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) records: Moxibustion at the heads of the two creases below Quchi (LI11), four locations on each foot, three moxa cones per location. When moxibusting one foot, apply fire to both sites simultaneously. Begin at Wushi (noon, 11 am–1 pm); by Rending time (evening, 9–11 pm), the zang-fu organs will automatically move once or twice, or rotate making sounds like thunder, resulting in immediate recovery.
The *Neijing* states: "If a person suffers a fall, evil blood remains inside the abdomen, causing abdominal fullness and obstruction of urination and defecation. First, administer purgative medicines. This indicates injury to the Jueyin meridian above and... [text missing] below." Treat right-sided pathology by selecting left-side points, and left-sided pathology by selecting right-side points. A strong pulse indicates survival; a small and weak pulse indicates death.
The *Zhenjiu Baojian* records: A woman suffered from Shanghan (Cold Damage) disease, seeing ghosts every night. Scholar Xu asked: At the onset of illness, was her menstrual period present? Her family replied: The menses had just ended. [Text missing]. Needling Zusanli (ST36) to a depth of 5 fen stopped the pain immediately. For breast abscess (Ru Yong), throat bi (Hou Bi), [text missing], and flaccidity of the dorsum of the foot, moxibustion at Zusanli (ST36) for three cones is indicated. For women with continuous discharge of foul blood, irregular menstruation, qi rebellion with abdominal distension, and a slow pulse, moxibustion at Xuehai (SP10) for two points, three cones each, is indicated. For women presenting with symptoms resembling pregnancy, red and white leukorrhea, continuous uterine bleeding, abdominal fullness with dyspnea, yellow urine, conditions resembling Gu poisoning, low back pain like cone-stabbing, inability to flex or extend, tongue deviation with drooling, vexation with qi rebellion, difficult urination, acute lower abdominal pain radiating to the yin, pain along the medial thigh, moxibustion at Yinggu (KI10) for two points is indicated. For amenorrhea, moxibustion at Huiyin (CV1) for three cones. For women with dysmenorrhea, dystocia, fetal movement pressing against the heart causing pain and dyspnea, moxibustion at Qichong (ST30) for seven cones. [Text missing] during menstruation, due to postpartum lochia rubra not stopping, peri-umbilical pain, moxibustion at Qihai (CV6) is indicated. For infertility, irregular menstruation, red and white leukorrhea, qi movement connecting to the back causing unbearable pain, moxibustion at Daimai (GB26) for two points is indicated. For postpartum lochia rubra not stopping and various strangury syndromes, moxibustion at Qihai (CV6) is indicated. For unbearable acute pain in both hypochondria after childbirth, moxibustion at Shiguan (ST15) for fifty cones is indicated. For irregular menstruation, postpartum lochia rubra not stopping, cold pain around the umbilicus, moxibustion at Yinjiao (CV7) for one hundred cones is indicated. For leukorrhea and zheng jia masses, due to postpartum lochia rubra not stopping, sterility, cold menstruation, moxibustion at Guanyuan (CV4) for one hundred cones is indicated. For sudden trismus in women, inability to speak, wind epilepsy, moxibustion at Chengjiang (CV24) for five cones is indicated. For postpartum deficiency of both blood and qi, moxibustion at Xuehai (SP10) for one hundred cones is indicated. For female hernia, cold pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, pain radiating to the hypochondrium unbearable, first moxibustion at Zhongting (CV17) for twenty-one cones is indicated.
