(*Mingtang Jing*, Vol. Lower: "Lower back pain connected with swelling of the hypogastrium, difficult urination.") Enuresis and incontinence. (*Tongren Shuxue Zhenjiu Tujing*) Juliao (GB29): Treats pain in the waist radiating to the hypogastrium. (See entry for Hand Pain.) Baohuang (BL54): Treats lower back pain with aversion to cold, hardness and tension in the hypogastrium, severe strangury causing painful and difficult urination, and sudden pain in the lower back and back. Zhizhong (BL54 is listed as Zhizhong in some contexts but text says Zhibian BL54 contextually fits description, actually text says Zhibian BL54? No, text says Zhibian BL54 is not standard, usually BL54 is Baohuang. Text says "Zhibian". Let's stick to text: Zhibian (likely referring to a point or typo for another, but treating as proper noun from text): Treats inability to bend forward and backward due to lower back pain, red and astringent urine, heaviness in the lumbosacral region making it hard to lift the body. (*Mingtang Jing* agrees). Weizhong (BL40): Treats heaviness in the lower back making it hard to lift the body. (See entry for Lumbar Spine). Chills and fever in the four limbs, lower back pain preventing bending forward and backward, yellow complexion, abdominal fullness, vomiting after eating, straight tongue root. Moxibustion on the upper part of the 11th thoracic vertebra and 1.5 cun to the left and right, three points, each 7 moxa cones. (*Qianjin Fang*). Yaoshu (DU2), Pangguang Shu (BL28), Changqiang (DU1), Qichong (ST30), Shangliao (BL31), Xialiao (BL32), Juliao (GB29): Mainly treat lower back pain. One should puncture and bleed the blue-red vessels in the lines of the knee, waist, and popliteal fossa; healing occurs upon bleeding. (*Qianjin Fang*). For those with lower back pain preventing bending forward and backward, have the patient stand upright, use a bamboo pole to touch the ground, measure to the navel, cut the bamboo at this length, then use this bamboo to measure along the spinal column. Moxibustion is applied at the head of the bamboo corresponding to the age of the patient in cones. After moxibustion, hide the bamboo so no one knows. Moxibustion on the white flesh margin of the transverse crease of the heel for ten cones is good for lower back pain. Also moxibustion on the Juyang point of the foot seven cones. Juyang is below the lateral malleolus. Also moxibustion on the "Yaomu" point seven cones. Located at the horizontal crease above the coccyx on both sides. Also moxibustion on the Baliao points and the middle of the bone above the lateral malleolus. Sudden lower back pain: Moxibustion one cun above the coccyx seven cones, one cun to the left and right, seven cones each. Lumbar spine pain: Moxibustion Xiaochangshu (BL27) fifty cones. (See entry for Deficiency and Damage). Lower back pain: Moxibustion Sanjiaoshu (BL22) according to age. (See entry for Consumption).
A woman suffered from long-term illness with severe lower back pain. The "waist eye" area is contraindicated for moxibustion. The doctor placed a needle in fire to heat it and mistakenly pricked the painful spot. Initially, it did not penetrate deeply, but subsequently, the pain stopped. Thus, it is known that the saying "fire does not fail people" is credible.
Xu Zhike, due to the great flood in Huainan, suddenly had a sound like water roaring in his abdomen. After treatment, he recovered. Since then, he has had lower back pain preventing flexion and extension. Reflecting on this, it must be that the Kidney Meridian was affected by water qi. He then moxibusted Shenshu (BL23) for 21 cones (3x7) and took Eldeer Antler Pill (Mijun Wan) to recover. (I believe that for lower back pain preventing flexion and extension, moxibustion on Shenshu is effective on its own; taking Mijun Wan is also optional.) My younger brother had lower back pain, making walking very difficult. I used fire needles to gently and frequently prick Shenshu (BL23), and his walking returned to normal; initially, no moxibustion was used. Many people with stooped backs come seeking point moxibustion. I suspect this is caused by tendon issues, so I press Yanglingquan (GB34) and instruct them to moxibustate there, which leads to recovery. This is because Yanglingquan is the Hui-Sea of Tendons. Therefore, lower back pain cannot be exclusively treated by focusing only on Shenshu (BL23) and ignoring other acupoints.
Fengchi (GB20): Treats lumbar stooping pulling the neck tendons, causing weakness and laxity. (*Tongren Shuxue Zhenjiu Tujing*). Feishu (BL13): Treats stiffness of the waist. (See entry for Chest Fullness). Shugu (BL65): Treats lower back pain as if broken or knotted, deafness, aversion to wind and cold, dizziness, inability to turn the neck, redness and ulceration of the inner canthus. Baihuanxu (BL30): Treats spasm and pain of the lumbar spine. (See entry for Lumbar Spine Pain).
