When the eyes are extremely hot, characterized by excessive ocular discharge (mucopurulent secretion) and tearing, this is due to disharmony of Yin and Yang, accumulation of heat in the Five Viscera, and toxic wind from the Liver and Diaphragm rushing upward. This suddenly causes severe swelling and pain that is unbearable, with the Five Wheels (the pupil, cornea, sclera, canthi, and eyelids, corresponding to Kidney, Liver, Lung, Heart, and Spleen respectively) swelling and protruding. This is caused by extreme heat in the Five Viscera. It is appropriate to take Jiu Jing San (Eye-Saving Powder), followed by Liang Ge Lian Qiao San (Cooling the Diaphragm Forsythia Decoction). First, apply Qing Liang San (Clearing Coolness Powder) as eye drops, then use Jiu Yi Dan (Nine-to-One Powder).
Jiu Jing San (Eye-Saving Powder)
Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Equiseti Herba (Muzei, 木贼), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 薄荷), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua, 菊花), Argoconcha (Shijueming, 石决明).
Grind the above into powder. Take three qian per dose, washed down with clear tea.
Liang Ge Lian Qiao San (Cooling the Diaphragm Forsythia Decoction)
Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao, 连翘), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) [each two liang], Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 薄荷), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 栀子), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Natrii Sulfas (Puxiao, 朴硝) [each one liang].
Decoct the above in water and take orally.
Bao Rou Jiao Ning (Eyelid Tissue Adhesion) is quite similar to Liang Jian Zhan Jing (Adhesion of Both Eyelids). Liang Jian Zhan Jing is a disease of the eyelids. This condition is a disease of the Bao Bian (eyelids/tarsal plates). Heat in the eyelids leads to sticky discharge, indicating a superficial disease; heat in the Bao Bian leads to adhesion, indicating a deeper disease. Therefore, they are treated as two separate conditions. Accumulated heat in the Spleen and Stomach, along with wind from the Liver and Diaphragm filling the interior of the eyelids, causes rotting tissue to swell up. The area becomes eroded and moist, with sticky, coagulating discharge. Qi and Blood stagnate and cannot disperse. After accumulating for years, nebulae (corneal opacities) form on the Black Pupil (cornea), causing blurred vision, photophobia, and fear of sunlight. The treatment method involves applying medicated powder via insufflation ("Yin Er Yang Si" ratio) to the eyes. If there is stagnant blood, it can be washed out using herbs such as Morus Alba Root Bark (Sangbaipi), Iron Fan Plant (Teshanzishu), Chrysanthemum Flower (Juhua), Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie), Equiseti Herba (Muzei), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe), and Salt Flowers (Yanhua). If the eyelid tissue has accumulated over a long period and become hard and dense, the eyelid should be everted and cauterized two or three times until the tissue becomes firm.
Question: Why do the eyes remain watery for a long time, with internal growth of false flesh (granulation tissue/pseudopterygium), and sticky discharge and tears? Answer: There is latent heat in the Stomach郁结 (stagnating internally). Treatment should use Tong Pi Xie Wei Tang (Splea-Clearing and Stomach-Draining Decoction) added with cold-natured agents to descend fire, cool blood, and dispel wind. It is suitable to apply solid/hard medicinal preparations. If the internal tissue is condensed and dense, washing is indicated until the tissue is smooth and clean. For hard and dense cases, cauterization is also acceptable. After cauterization, apply Qing Liang Xiao Du Gao (Clearing Coolness and Detoxifying Ointment).
Tong Pi Xie Wei Tang (Splea-Clearing and Stomach-Draining Decoction)
Ophiopogonis Radix (Maimendong, 麦门冬), Leonuri Fructus (Chongweizi, 茺蔚子), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu, 知母), Asparagi Radix (Tianmendong, 天门冬), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩).
For severe heat, add Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏), Natrii Sulfas (Puxiao, 朴硝), and Gardeniae Semen (Zhiren, 栀仁). Another prescription adds Heishen (Black Ginseng/Scrophulariae Radix).
Grind the above equally into powder. Take five qian per dose, decocted in water, taken before meals.
