Liver Wind Accumulated Heat Syndrome is caused by liver fatigue and overwork, along with the stagnation of the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, Fright). The symptoms recur intermittently every two or three years, eventually leading to the formation of Yi Mo (corneal or lens opacity), which may gather or scatter, accompanied by redness, dryness, and tearing. This condition is common in those who study diligently under lamplight at night or engage in delicate crafts such as carving and silversmithing. Long-term labor damages the Liver, causing accumulated heat to transform into Wind. Once the Liver is affected by Wind, it inevitably causes headache, and vision gradually becomes dim and blurred. Treatment method: For cases with opacity, apply medicinal powder via insufflation; internally administer formulas that purge the Liver and dispel Wind to clear Liver wind-heat. Observe dietary restrictions and rest. After one and a half to two years of conditioning, the root cause of the disease will be eliminated. For eye washing methods, refer to the eye-washing formula for "pain, swelling, and dryness" listed in previous sections.
Q: Why do eye symptoms recur intermittently throughout the year without a fixed time? A: This is due to accumulated heat in the Liver Meridian. The Classics state: When the Liver is fatigued, Qi rebels; when the Liver is tranquil, Qi flows smoothly. When Qi is urgent, the disease manifests; when Qi is smooth, the disease subsides. Treatment should involve administering Xi Gan San (Wash Liver Powder) or Sheng Feng Tang (Dispel Wind Decoction) during attacks with severe pain. Regularly taking these formulas can eliminate this disease. Topically, use Dian Yong Liang Qing San (Cooling Clearing Eye Drops).
Xi Gan San (Wash Liver Powder): See the section on Tian Xing Chi Yan (Epidemic Red Eye).
Xie Gan San (Purge Liver Powder): Treats accumulated heat in the Liver Meridian.
Ingredients: Hei Shen (Black Ginseng/Scrophularia), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Mang Xiao (Mirabilite).
All ingredients are ground into equal parts into fine powder. Take 2-3 qian per dose, mixed with hot water after meals, twice daily.
Sheng Feng Tang (Dispel Wind Decoction): Treats excessive Liver fire and heat, where the pupil is unclear or small. Suitable for consumption.
Ingredients: Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn - *Note: Substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice*), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Xuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Ling Yang Jiao (Antelope Horn - *Do not use if Liver Blood is deficient*), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root).
Grind all ingredients into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, decocted in water with Deng Xin Cao (Juncus Effusus Stem) and Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf), taken after meals.
Zuo Qi Sheng Hua (Seeing Flowers Upon Sitting and Rising) Syndrome belongs to Nei Zhang (Internal Cataract). This syndrome is caused by deficiency of Liver Blood and weakness of the Liver and Kidney meridians. The Six Yang Qi fail to rise. Therefore, prolonged sitting damages Blood; upon rising, dizziness and blurred vision occur. One may see various colored flowers before the eyes—red, black, or white—causing visual confusion and dimness, which stabilizes only after a long time. The pupil appears dilated and vision is unclear. This syndrome requires tonifying the Liver and Kidney, such as using Ming Mu Gu Ben Wan (Brighten Eyes and Solidify Root Pill). If untreated, prolonged illness may lead to Qing Mang Nei Zhang (Green Blindness Internal Cataract) or evolve into Wu Feng Nei Zhang (Five Winds Internal Cataract), becoming a difficult-to-treat condition. Gu Ben Wan consists of Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Tian Men Dong (Asparagus Tuber), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), with added Ren Shen (Ginseng Root).
Q: What is the reason for seeing multicolored, fly-wing-like spots before the eyes when sitting or standing? A: This is due to Qi deficiency in the Liver and Kidney meridians. The Classics state: When Liver and Kidney Qi is abundant, vision is bright and clear; when Liver Meridian Qi is deficient, vision becomes dim and dizzy. Treatment method: Administer Bu Shen Wan (Tonify Kidney Pill), Bu Gan Chong Guang San (Supplement Liver and Restore Light Powder), Huan Jing Wan (Return Essence Pill), Ming Mu Gu Ben Wan (Brighten Eyes and Solidify Root Pill), or Bu Shen Ming Mu Wan (Tonify Kidney and Brighten Eyes Pill), adjusting according to the patient's Qi and Blood deficiency or excess.
